North Carolina junior Brayden Schnur announced today that he would be foregoing his final year of eligibility and turning pro effective immediately. Schnur compiled a 49-25 overall singles record, 38-22 in dual-match play, with all but three dual-matches coming at the top spot in the singles lineup. Schnur battled injuries in each of the last two seasons but when he was healthy he was a very tough out. Brayden’s top individual accomplishments came during the fall of 2014 (only fall he played) when he went 11-0 and won the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Brayden will make his pro debut on Saturday afternoon against Radek Stepanek in qualies at the ATP Masters Series Rogers Cup in Toronto.

 

Georgia rising sophomore Emil Reinberg and Georgia fall commit Nathan Ponwith won their first pro doubles title today at the Godfrey, Illinois, F24 Futures. The pair defeated Jesus Bandres and Facundo Mena 6-3, 6-4 in a match that took 1 hour and 13 minutes. They broke twice in the first set and then once more in the second set to claim the title.

The two singles quarterfinal matches on the top of the draw in Godfrey pitted former college players against each other.  Rhyne Williams (Tennessee ’11) ended the strong run of Jonathan Chang (Rice ’13) with a 6-4, 6-2 win and Tennys Sandgren (Tennessee ’11) came from behind to defeat Wil Spencer (Georgia ’12) 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The two former Vols will meet in the semifinals on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. central with the winner advancing to Sunday’s final against the winner of the Facundo Mena/Luke Bambridge match.

North Florida Athletics Director Lee Moon announced that Idaho head coach Mariana Cobra will be the new women’s head coach at the Jacksonville, Florida, school. Cobra, who is a 2008 Northern Iowa graduate, went 34-18 (.654) in two seasons at Idaho and guided the Vandals to back-to-back conference titles. Cobra replaced Audra Cohen who departed after four seasons to take the head coaching job at Oklahoma.

New Charlotte head coach Jeremy Feldman announced the hiring of Andrew Thompson as the 49ers new men’s assistant coach. Thompson, who is a 2010 Middlebury graduate, spent the last two seasons as the women’s assistant coach at Claremont Mudd Scripps.

Colette Lewis wrote a nice piece about William Blumberg on the Tennis Recruiting Network. She has several good quotes from the No. 1 American recruit in the class of 2017 and also mentions that he will be enrolling at North Carolina in January – make sure you give it a read.
