It was a good day for former Michigan stars Evan King ('13) and Emina Bektas ('15) as the Wolverine duo won the US Open National Playoff Mixed Doubles Draw with a 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (8) win over Sanaz Marand (North Carolina '11) and Malcolm Harrison (NW Missouri St '12). The win earned King and Bektas a main draw wild card into next week's US Open which will be the first main draw Grand Slam match for each.

#631 Joran Vliegen (East Carolina '14) won his first singles title of the year, second of his career, with a straight set win over #508 Romain Barbosa in the final of the $10K Belgium F11 Futures in Huy. Vliegen trailed 4-1 in the opening set before winning five straight to take the set 6-4. Vliegen broke Barbosa in a three-deuce game to start the second set and made the break lead hold up in route to a 6-4, 6-4 win in 1 hour and 16 minutes.

#471 Petr Michnev (Hawaii-Pacific '14) will be seeking a singles title for the second week in a row after picking up his ninth straight win with a 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 over #494 Peter Nagy (Texas A&M Corpus Christi '15) in the semifinals of the $10K Austria F7 Futures in Poertschach - next up for Michnev is 19-year old #542 Corentin Denolly who was a top 3 ITF junior that has already won one Futures title this year. Michnev will be seeking his second singles title of the year and third overall.

Andre Begemann (Pepperdine '08) was seeking his 29th career doubles title and fifth at the ATP level but he and Leander Paes weren't able to close out Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Henri Kontinen in the doubles final at the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open. Begemann and Paes led 6-4, 4-2 before GGL and Kontinen won three straight to go ahead 5-4. The second set went to a tiebreak and Begemann and Paes went ahead 6-1 meaning they had five match points. Unfortunately they lost seven straight points to lose the tiebreak 8-6 and then after falling behind 7-3 in the third set supertiebreak they fell 10-8.

Mitch McDaniels (New Mexico '15) had a great week in Romania but his road came to a end after falling 6-1, 6-4 to #571 Gabriel Hidalgo in the semifinals at the $10K Romania F14 Futures in Galati. McDaniels entered the week ranked 1441 but when these six points are added in he should rise to around 1080.

Note - the NCAA Champion was guaranteed a main draw wild card through 2000 but then the US Open wild card selection committee changed the policy to only strongly consider the NCAA Champion. Every American NCAA Champion has received a main draw wild card except 2008 women's champion Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell who received a wild card into qualies.
