It’s officially time to open the book on another season of college tennis and the first page contains the preseason individual rankings which were released earlier on Tuesday. For those that weren’t aware these preseason rankings are simply last year’s final rankings with all the graduating seniors removed along with those that turned pro or are taking the fall off to play pro events. There are no freshmen included in these initial singles rankings although there is a list of the top 10 newcomers.

Ohio State junior Mikael Torpegaard lands at No. 1 in the men’s rankings after finishing last year at No. 2. TCU junior Cameron Norrie is at No. 2, Illinois junior Aleks Vukic is at No. 3, Virginia senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski is at No. 4, and Georgia Tech junior Christopher Eubanks comes in at No. 5.

Mackenzie McDonald would have been the preseason No. 1 but as we all know the NCAA Singles Champion turned pro during the summer. TCU’s Alex Rybakov would have been ranked No. 10 but he isn’t enrolled in school this fall and is instead playing pro events.

Other notable omissions are Mississippi State’s Rishab Agarwal, SMU’s Hunter Johnson, and Liberty’s Sam Matheson. I’m assuming that Agarwal and Johnson are also playing pro events this fall and will return to school in the spring but I’ve not yet confirmed that. Matheson, who finished last season ranked No. 99, decided to forego his senior year and turn pro despite having never played in a main draw match at any pro level.

There were two men’s players that finished last season ranked with one team but enter this season ranked with another – Korey Lovett (Alabama to Central Florida) and Igor Smelyanski (Tennessee to Clemson).

The defending national champs, Virginia, had all six of its expected singles started ranked plus Luca Corinteli was 11th in the doubles rankings with Thai-Son Kwiatkowski.

There were several schools that had multiple players ranked but the only Non-Power 5 schools to make the list were Memphis (AAC), Columbia (Ivy), and Tulsa (AAC).

Schools with multiple ranked singles players (includes newcomers):
6 – Virginia
5 – Georgia, Texas, USC
4 – California, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State
3 – Duke, Florida, LSU, Memphis, Northwestern, Stanford, TCU, Texas Tech, UCLA, Wake Forest
2 – Alabama, Arkansas, Clemson, Columbia, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kentucky, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, Purdue, South Carolina, Tennessee, Tulsa, Vanderbilt

Below are your top 125 plus the 10 newcomers along with their respective Universal Tennis Ratings as of 9/13/16.
