The finals are set at the 60th Southern California Intercollegiate Championships and it’ll be an All-USC final between two guys that may anchor the singles lineup this coming season. USC senior Nick Crystal earned his spot in the finals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UCLA sophomore Max Cressy while USC freshman Brandon Holt defeated his junior teammate Thibault Forget 6-3, 7-5. Holt and Crystal were the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds respectively with sophomore Logan Smith the top seed although he got knocked out in second round by Cressy. USC sophomore Jake DeVine saw his first action since last April (torn arm ligaments) and despite a first round loss he won a few matches in the back draw so that has to be viewed as a positive for Peter Smith.

The doubles final will be contested between the top two seed as Texas Tech’s Alex Sendegeya and Bjorn Thomson meet USC’s Brandon Holt and Riley Smith. Holt and Smith haven’t had a match closer than 8-5 while Sendegeya and Thomson were only pushed in their opener which was an 8-6 win over USC’s David Laser and Logan Smith.

UCLA freshman Ben Goldberg will play Loyola Marymount freshman Ryan Brown in the consolation finals – Goldberg defeated DeVine in a third set supertiebreak in the semifinals while Brown got his spot in the finals without playing a match courtesy of three-straight walk-over wins. Full results from all the different draws is available at this link and live streaming of tomorrow’s finals will be available at this link

I’ve been impressed by USC junior Henry Ji’s play so far this fall. Ji upset Texas Tech’s Alex Sendegeya 7-6 in the third to make the quarterfinals and he has been right there in matches against other Power 5 top of the lineup guys. There will be a lot of competition for the No. 6 spot in the lineup but I think Ji has put himself in the mix which isn’t bad for a former 4-star recruit in a Blue Chip/5-star world.

Duke freshman Spencer Furman and UNC Asheville sophomore Henry Patten each won an “A” level singles flight on Sunday at the Charlotte 49ers Fall Invitational. Furman, who was seeing his first collegiate action, defeated Winthrop sophomore Diego Quiroz (Roberto’s brother) 6-1, 7-6 while Patten defeated Duke freshman 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Troy was dominating the other singles flights but as of Sunday night I hadn’t seen completed brackets of the other flights

San Diego welcomed in Utah State, Arizona, and Denver for the three-day Hagedorn Hidden-Dual. San Diego led the way going 18-8 in singles while Utah State went 14-12, Arizona 8-14, and Denver 7-13. Below are results and comments from Utah State, San Diego, and Arizona’s recaps.

“Overall, this weekend was very productive for our team,” said USU head coach James Wilson. “Playing against tough competition at sea level gave me a great indication of where we stand and what we need to improve before January. Daniel and Andrew continued their momentum from yesterday and played solid. Jack and Kai also had a great tournament overall.”

“This is as close to an actual dual match as we are going to get and it’s been a wonderful learning experience for each player. I was thrilled that we could bring as much passion as we did in the second match of singles against Denver. It isn’t easy to get up for that round after you have already played 5 hours of tennis. Our boys showed us what they were made of and took care of business,” said San Diego head coach Ryan Keckley.

“I’m really happy with how we finished the tournament,” said Arizona head coach Clancy Shields. “I thought we improved throughout the weekend and we left it all on the court as a group. We need to continue improving in a lot of areas before we start the team season in January. These next few months will define our spring season.”
