Ohio State Holds Off Kentucky; Historic Win For Northwestern, South Carolina & Tulane Pick Up Quality Wins

There was only one men’s match on Friday that took place between ranked teams and it happened in Columbus as No. 3 Ohio State ran its record to 8-0 with an anything but easy 4-1 win over No. 15 Kentucky. The doubles point on the other hand was pretty easy with the Buckeyes winning big at No. 2 and No. 3. Ohio State rode the momentum from the doubles point into singles and took four opening sets but Kentucky managed to get splits on two of those courts. Kentucky’s Nils Ellefsen tied the match with a straight set win at No. 4 but Ohio State countered with straight set wins from Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen at No. 1 and No. 5. Each of the remaining matches were in third sets but Ohio State sophomore Kyle Seelig would pull away from Kentucky’s Enzo Wallart to clinch the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 6.

Ohio State head coach Ty Tucker talked after the match about the win and the upcoming gauntlet that awaits the Buckeyes.

South Carolina picked up a nice 4-1 win at home over previously red-hot Old Dominion. The Gamecocks won what turned out to be an important doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and then SC picked up straight set singles wins from Gabriel Freidrich, Harrison O’Keefe, and Alex Fennell. Old Dominion got a win from Javier Jover Maestre at No. 5 and both Jacob Nicolussi and Aziz Kijametovic were just points away from winning at No. 3 and No. 4 so that doubles point really did play a big role in determining the outcome.

Northwestern improved to 10-0 for the first-time in program history with a 6-1 road win at NC State. Northwestern took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and the Cats have now gone 20-3 in individual doubles play including 16-1 at No. 1 and No. 2. In singles play the teams split first sets at 1 through 4 (four-court indoor facility) but when Konrad Zieba pulled out the second set in a tiebreak at No. 3 that was the beginning of the end for the Pack. Northwestern won at 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 with NC State getting it’s lone win from freshman Alexis Galarneau at No. 2. Galarneau has now won five straight matches in straight sets with the last two coming over stellar competition (Finzelberg/Shropshire).

Tulane ran its record to 5-1 with a 5-2 win over Auburn. The Green Wave took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 and then they picked up singles wins from Constantin Schmitz, Sebastian Rey, Tyler Schick, and Luis Erlenbusch with Schmitz getting the clincher at No. 1.

  • #14 Oklahoma ran its record to 6-1 with a 6-1 win over Wichita State – OU won in straight sets at 1, 2, 3, 4, & 6 while Wichita State picked up its lone point from Marius Frosa after he won 0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (20-18) at No. 5 – yes that third set tiebreak score is correct it was 20-18. 
  • #16 Mississippi State picked up a 4-0 win on the road over Miami (FL) with State winning eight of nine sets in singles. 
  • #21 SMU went on the road and defeated Army 7-0 – three of six matches went to a third set. 
  • Tennessee blanked Tulsa 7-0 with the Vols winning 12 of 14 sets in singles
  • Penn State slid past VCU 4-3 with senior Marc Collado clinching the match with a straight set win at No. 6
  • Texas Tech won a pair of matches with a 4-0 win over UTSA and a 6-1 win over Abilene Christian – Red Raiders won all but two sets in singles in the two matches combined
  • Princeton won its first match of the year with a solid 4-3 win over Rice – senior Tom Colautti clinched the win 6-2 in the third at No. 3

    Impressive 7-0 win for Tennessee over Tulsa. Somewhat surprising.
