Oracle/ITA Masters Down To the Final 4; Impressive Debuts from Vale and Cerundolo in Gainesville; Seeds Roll in the Bay

The action heated up on the second day of the Oracle ITA Masters with three of the top four men’s seeds moving into the semifinals while the women’s draw saw some surprises. The men’s top seed Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos was pushed to three sets by Old Dominion’s Adam Moundir and then a few hours later he defeated Cal’s Billy Griffith in straight sets. Chrysochos will meet the No. 14 seed Columbia’s Victor Pham in the semifinals after the California native defeated the No. 5 seed Elon’s Felipe Sarrasague in straight sets and then followed that up with a straight set win over the No. 4 seed Arizona’s State Michael Geerts.

USC sophomore and No. 2 seed Brandon Holt advanced to the semifinals after getting past Pepperdine’s Dennis Uspensky in three sets and then later in the day he cruised past Portland’s Michail Pervolarkais in straight sets. Holt’s next opponent will be the No. 3 seed Baylor’s Johannes Schretter. The junior from Austria has only dropped eight games so far including a pair of dominating wins over Arizona State’s Benjamin Hannetad and Texas’s Harrison Scott. 

The women’s top seed UCLA’s Ena Shibahara booked her spot in the semifinals with a tough three set win over North Carolina’s Sara Daavettila. Shibahara will now meet the No. 13 seed Oklahoma’s Lily Miyazaki after the senior from Tokyo defeated the No. 5 seed USC’s Jessica Failla and No. 12 seed St. John’s Jessica Livianu. North Carolina freshman Alle Sanford will face Pepperdine senior Mayar Ahmed in the other semifinal. Sanford, who is the No. 6 seed, defeated Loyola Marymount’s Eva Marie Voracek and Duke’s Samantha Harris while Ahmed, who is the No. 10 seed, rolled over both Loyola Marymount’s Veronica Miroshnichenko and East Carolina’s Celia Ruiz.

Milwaukee Tennis Classic – Seven of the top eight seeds on the women’s side advanced to the quarterfinals while just half of the men’s seeds were as fortunate. The only top eight seed to fall on the women’s side was the No. 3 seed North Texas’s Maria Kononova who lost 6-4, 6-4 to Wisconsin’s Alexis Keberle. Miami’s Sinead Lohan, Arkansas’s Ana Oparenovic, Syracuse’s Miranda Ramirez, Louisiana Monroe’s Stefana Andrei, Arkansas’s Leolia Jeanjean, Iowa’s Yufei Long, and Arkansas’s Mia Jurasic were the other winners. 

The men’s top seed Iowa’s Josh Silverstein came back from a set down to defeat Virginia Tech’s Alex Ribeiro 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 and he’ll now play Minnesota’s Stefan Milicevic who ousted the No. 6 seed ODU’s Javier Maestre. Arkansas’s Jose Salazar edged the No. 5 seed Illinois’s Zeke Clark 7-6, 7-6 in a matchup of the two players with the highest UTRs in the draw. Salazar will meet the No. 4 seed Virginia Tech’s Mitch Harper on Saturday. In the bottom half of the draw it’ll be the No. 8 seed Arkansas’s Josh Howard-Tripp taking on Old Dominion’s Aziz Kijametovic and the No. 2 seed Minnesota’s Felix Corwin meeting Big Ten rival Michigan State’s Brett Forman.

Florida Gator Ranked +1 – Two rounds of singles were played on the opening day with some freshman making some real noise.

Wake Forest freshman Yuval Solomon upset the top seed in the orange draw Florida’s Alfredo Perez 7-6, 6-3 and then later in the day he knocked off Louisville’s big gun Chris Morin-Kougoucheff 6-4, 6-4. Solomon will meet Florida freshman Duarte Vale in the semifinals after Vale made his collegiate debut with wins over Tulane’s Ewan Moore and Mississippi State’s Strahinja Rakic. South Carolina’s Gabriel Friedrich and Mississippi State’s Giovanni Oradini will meet in the other semifinal. Oradini took out a pair of seeded players with wins over Wake Forest’s Christian Seraphim and Florida’s McClain Kessler while Friedrich picked up straight set wins over Kentucky’s Jake Stefanik and Tulane’s Tyler Schick. 

Tulane’s Constantin Schmitz, who is the top seed in the blue draw, won a pair of matches in straight sets to set up a semifinal showdown against Tennessee’s Scott Jones. Jones went the distance in both of his matches against Florida’s Chase Perez-Blanco (6-4, 2-6, 7-6) and Kentucky’s Trey Yates (6-1, 6-7, 7-5). South Carolina freshman Francisco Cerundolo made his collegiate debut and it was a good one as the Buenos Aires native defeated Illinois’s Aleks Kovacevic 6-3, 6-3 and Tennessee’s Timo Stodder 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(5). Cerundolo will meet Florida’s Johannes Ingildsen in the semifinals after the Gator sophomore defeated Tulane’s Luis Erlenbusch and Louisville’s Nico Rouanet in three sets.

Battle in the Bay Classic – Each of the top eight seeds rolled into the round of 16 with Georgia’s Walker Duncan and USC’s Jack Jaede the only ones to be forced to a third set. There will be two rounds of singles played on Saturday so if everything goes according to seed they’ll be some super quarterfinal matchups.

Debbie Southern Fall Classic – One round of singles and two rounds of doubles were played with players from Furman, Ohio State, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, Mississippi State, Texas, Tennessee, Florida State, Clemson, Ole Miss, and Wake Forest spread out over nine flights of singles and four flights of doubles.
