The Mississippi State and Texas A&M Men made it through the second to last weekend of SEC regular season play unbeaten to bring us to what will undoubtedly be a winner take all showdown Friday in College Station.  The two teams finish the regular season Sunday against the two teams in the cellar that you have to expect them to win.  While the Bulldogs and Aggies were taking care of their end of the business one team that was not was Georgia.  The reeling Bulldogs went into Tuscaloosa without Emil Reinberg or Walker Duncan, but did manage to have Robert Loeb back in the lineup.  Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and while it’s hard to say it was a stunning loss it was yet another blow to a Georgia squad that now finds themselves in a pickle just trying to qualify for the NCAAs.  It was also a good weekend for the last place team in the conference, Auburn, as they picked up their first conference win Sunday over Arkansas and went down to the wire losing 4-3 Friday to Ole Miss.

The big match for the Women this week was Florida at South Carolina in a battle between conference leaders.  South Carolina entered unbeaten in the SEC while Florida only had one loss and a chance to pull even with the Gamecocks.  The weather wreaked havoc with the match before it ever got started moving the match time up to 8 a.m. Saturday and playing singles first trying to beat the rain.  Even with the modified schedule the rain intervened and forced a long delay with the match tied 2-2.  When play resumed Florida took 7 of the 8 games played and closed out the two remaining matches to upset the Gamecocks and post a 4-2 win and pull into a tie for the conference lead.

Men

Alabama

Alabama hosted a depleted Georgia team Friday night in what looked to be a great chance for them to get their first win over Georgia since 2003.  The Tide got off to just the start they needed getting the doubles point and a quick 1&2 win by Zhe Zhou on Court 6 to make it 2-0.  Georgia answered with wins on Courts 2 and 4 and the match was all square 2-2 with Mazen Osama up a set and a break at the moment.  Osama would finish his match out on Court 1 and give the Tide a 3-2 lead.  Edson Ortiz battled back from a first set loss and split to send his match to a 3rd while Alexey Nesterov was already locked in a three set battle on Court 5.  Nesterov made the push in the 3rd and closed it for Bama and the 4-2 win.

Alabama returned on Sunday for a battle with Tennessee and managed to pick up doubles and a win from Patrick Kaukovalta, his first win since coming back from injury 4 matches ago against Ole Miss, but in the end it wasn’t enough and the Tide fell 5-2.

Arkansas

Arkansas had a long weekend made longer with weather delays and injury.  The Hogs were slated to play Mississippi State in Starkville on Friday but the weather just wouldn’t cooperate and the match was postponed until Saturday morning.  On a chilly Saturday morning with temps in the low 40’s they managed to get the match started.  Unfortunately for the Hogs on deuce of the first game of doubles on Court 3 Alex Reco went down with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.  He was literally unable to move and Josh Howard-Tripp was forced to attempt to play his best 1 vs. 2 but at this level that’s asking a bit too much.  The Hogs dropped the doubles point and then 3 quick singles matches to clinch it and it was 5-0 with Salazar about to play a match tiebreak on 1 and Court 6 in the final game of the match when the mist and a weather delay came.  Fortunately the delay wasn’t too long and while the Hogs lost the match on Court 5 Salazar was able to rally in the 10 point tiebreak to win it 10-8 for nice victory over State’s #4 Borges.  The injury to Reco played a big factor on Sunday as Arkansas made the 4 hour drive down to Auburn who was yet to win an SEC match.  Arkansas nabbed the doubles point but suddenly found themselves in a 3-2 hole and a couple matches going three sets.  Oscar Mesquida picked up a win on Court 3 to level the match at 3-3 and it was all down to Pedro Alonso on Court 5 but he fell short 6-2 in the third and Hogs took a tough road loss.

Auburn

Auburn entered the weekend without an SEC win but had a couple matches that on paper looked like they could be competitive in, and competitive they were.  Ole Miss playing without Gustav Hansson or Filip Kraljevic in singles made for a very tight match that came down to a 3-3 tie and Court 5 going to a 3rd set.  Tad Maclean however was unable to get it done and the Tigers dropped another tough one.  Maclean may not have known it at the time but his chance for redemption was just around the corner.  Arkansas came in after a Saturday match in Starkville and down a man due to an injury that occurred in that Saturday match and the Tigers once again found themselves in a 3-3 match with things all coming down to Court 5.  This time Maclean came up big and won the third set 6-2 giving Auburn their first SEC win of the year.

Florida

The Gators headed to College Station for the maruee match of the weekend and a showdown with #5 Texas A&M.  For the second straight match the Gators dropped the doubles point and were staring up a pretty big hill given the talented singles lineup the Aggies have.  Florida got off to a slow start in singles and the match was never really in question as the Gators dropped three singles matches in straight sets as the Aggies clinched the vitctory 4-0.  The remaining matches were played out with all three going to a 10 point match tiebreak and Andy Andrade managed to pick up Florida’s lone win in a 6-1 loss.  The Gators then made the trip to Baton Rouge and took their frustration out on the Tigers with an absolute drubbing as they never dropped a set and swept a 7-0 decision.

Georgia

Georgia only had one match to play this weekend and that was at Alabama on Friday night.  The match was moved indoors due to weather but I’m not sure if that really favored either team.  Georgia had a bigger issue than the weather as they were playing without Emil Reinberg and Walker Duncan.  The good news was Robert Loeb was back in the lineup after sitting out a week.  The Bulldogs swapped Zielinski and Ponwith in the lineup and without Reinberg that meant Zielinski moved all the way up to #2.  Ironically, the two wins the Bulldogs picked up were from Zielinski and Loeb but that was all they would manage and dropped a disappointing 4-2 decision to Alabama.  The loss drops Georgia to 10-9 on the year and with a tough weekend ahead with Vandy and Kentucky it is very possible that Georgia could find themselves at 10-11 and ineligible for NCAAs.  I’d look for them to be scheduling an additional match, or at least have it ready should they lose both matches next weekend, to make sure they are .500 and NCAA eligible.

Kentucky

Kentucky had a Wednesday match at home with Ohio State that was very competitive but one they ultimately dropped 4-2.  The Wildcats only had one SEC match this weekend and that was a home tilt against Vanderbilt for Senior day as Kentucky said goodbye to Trey Yates, Jake Stefanik, Gus Benson and Will Bushamuka.  The weather in Kentucky was once again not cooperating and the match had to be played indoors which was surely to Kentucky’s liking.  The wildcats dropped the doubles point but got off to a quick start in singles as only courts 1-4 get played first as UK only has 4 indoor courts.   Ryotaro Matsumura has been playing outstanding but you had to think that getting Cam Klinger indoors was a tough match.  Matsumura made it look anything but tough as he was the first match to finish with a 1&1 victory.  Trey Yates and Enzo Wallart followed Matsumura’s lead as they also posted straight set wins and Kentucky found themselves with a 3-1 advantage and Will Bushamuka going to a third set as Courts 5 and 6 were on.  There would be no need to finish the matches on 5 and 6 as Bushamuka grabbed a 6-4 third set victory and give Kentucky the 4-1 win and keep them locked in a tie with Tennessee for 4th in the SEC with the two schools facing off next Sunday in their final regular season match.

LSU

The Tigers have found it tough just to win points lately and with South Carolina and Florida coming to town for the weekend it surely wasn’t going to be easy to get any.   LSU was never really in the team match against South Carolina but they did manage to pick up a couple points with Stewart Block posting a 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 6 and Shane Monroe picking up a win on Court 1 with a 10-7 victory in a match tiebreak.  With that match behind them the Tigers welcomed Florida to town Sunday and couldn’t say goodbye fast enough.  LSU dropped doubles and all six singles matches in straight sets to drop to 1-9 in conference play.

Mississippi State

The Bulldogs opened with a weather delayed match on Saturday with Arkansas but found no trouble in keeping the energy up on a chilly 40 degree day in Starkville to post a 6-1 win over the Hogs.  The Bulldogs immediately grabbed some food and headed up the road to Oxford for the in-state rivalry match with Ole Miss the next day.  The Rebels were the one team that nobody on the State roster had beaten yet in their career and they knew the hostile environment they would be entering in Oxford.  However, the State fans came including the entire ladies team making the drive up that morning as they watched the men post a 5-2 victory that was over fairly early after the Bulldogs won doubles and posted straight set wins on Courts 1, 2 and 5 to clinch things at 4-1 while the Rebels picked up a victory on Court 6 over freshman Arvid Nordquist.  The remaining two matches were split with State picking up the win on Court 3 and Ole Miss on Court 4.

Ole Miss

The Rebels traveled to Auburn Friday and found themselves in what was probaby a much tougher match than they had anticipated.  While Filip Kraljevic played doubles he was not in the singles lineup and Gustav Hansson continues to sit.  Kraljevic sitting this one may have had Head Coach Toby Hansson second guessing himself after the match ended up 3-3 and Court 5 splitting to go to a third and deciding set for the match.  If Hansson was second guessing himself at all freshman Finn Reynolds quickly put his mind at ease as he jumped out quick and took a match clinching 6-0 victory in the third giving the Rebels the 4-3 win.  The Rebels then returned home for the big in-state rivalry match with Mississippi State.  The crowd was in full force for senior day as the rebels honored Zvonimir Babic, Grey Hamilton and Gustav Hansson but they were quickly silenced as the Bulldogs put up a pair of dominating 6-2 and 6-1 double matches on Courts 1 and 2.  The momentum carried into singles and while the freshman Reynolds posted another victory for the Rebels on Court 6 the match was over early as they dropped straight set decisions on Courts 1, 2 and 5.  Crowd favorite Grey Hamilton did manage to pick up another point for the Rebels with a 7-6, 7-5 win on Court 4 in the 4-2 loss.

South Carolina

The Gamecocks entered the weekend with LSU and a match they had to try not to overlook knowing they had a big one with Texas A&M on Sunday.  While they didn’t exactly steamroll LSU like many had been doing lately they did manage to leave Baton Rouge with a 5-2 win only dropping points on Courts 1 and 6.  South Carolina then headed to College Station with aspirations of yet another big SEC upset and hopes of handing the Aggies their first conference loss.  The Gamecocks started off well picking up 6-3 and 6-2 wins on Courts 2 and 3 in doubles to take a 1-0 lead.  The lead was short-lived though as the Aggies took five straight set wins before Paul Jubb went to a 10 point match tiebreak on Court 2 and fell just short 10-8 to #10 Arthur Rinderknech making the final 6-1 Aggies.

Tennessee

Tennessee had to wait until Sunday for their lone match of the weekend against a suddenly invigorated Alabama team that was coming off an upset of #21 Georgia.  The Vols however were taking no part in letting the Tide pull off two upsets in one weekend and easily handled the Tide 5-2.  The Vols dropped the doubles point and a match on Court 4 but picked up straight set wins on Courts 1, 3, 5 and 6 before senior Luis Valero finished the day with a 6-2 third set win on Court 2.  The Vols now sit at 7-3 in the SEC and are set for a big weekend against Kentucky and Vanderbilt, the teams right there with them in the standings.

Texas A&M

The Aggies had what on paper looked like a very challenging weekend in Florida and South Carolina, albeit both matches were at home.  I think someone forgot to tell the guys that those were supposed to be tough matches as they made them look anything but tough with a pair of 6-1 wins.  Against Florida the Aggies got off to a very fast start taking doubles and several early singles leads that were just too much to overcome.  A&M grabbed four of the six first sets and Valentin Vacherot, Patrick Kypson and Carlos Aguilar clinched it with straight set wins in which none of them allowed their opponents more than a total of four games.  The remaining three matches all went to 10 point match tiebreaks with A&M taking two of them on Courts 2 and 3 but dropping their only point on Court 6.  With one big match behind them the Aggies welcomed South Carolina to town on Sunday looking to avoid the upset South Carolina had already dealt both Georgia and Florida this year.  South Carolina got off to a good start taking the doubles point but they would get no closer as the Aggies took all six singles matches including Arthur Rinderknech’s second 10 point match tiebreak win of the weekend.  All eyes will be on College Station on Friday as it’s A&M vs. Mississippi State for the regular season title (sorry Auburn and LSU but I don’t see either of these teams dropping a loss to you after winning this match).

Vanderbilt

The Commodores made the short trip north to Lexington for a Sunday showdown with Kentucky that was to be played indoors.  Vandy grabbed the doubles point and had to be thinking they just needed at least one of the four matches that went on first as they have been strong at 5 and 6 where Kentucky has been struggling.  The Wildcats weren’t going to make it easy though and Vandy dropped straight set losses on Courts 1, 3 and 4 and found themselves in a 3-1 hole with Courts 5 and 6 going on.  Danny Valent went to a third set with Will Bushamuka and it looked like this was going to be the crucial match as Vanderbilt was leading the matches on Courts 5 and 6.  Bushamuka proved to be too tough on his home court on senior day in Lexington though and Valent dropped the third set 6-4 handing the Commodores a 4-1 loss.

Women

Alabama

Alabama entered the week without an SEC win but were getting to see Arkansas and Missouri who had a total of one win between them.  The Tide could not have asked for a better opportunity to pick up some momentum.  Things got started Friday night in Fayetteville with Alabama dropping the doubles point before picking up a win from Alba Cortina-Pou on Court 5 to level the match at 1-1.  The Tide then dropped a couple of straight setters on Courts 1 and 3 and found themselves in a 3-1 hole.  The remaining matches were all very tight and all ended up going three sets and keeping hope alive.  Unfortunately Alabama fell 6-4 on Court 4 in the next match to finish and end things at 4-1 in favor of Arkansas.  That setup Sunday’s showdown between Bama and Missouri who both stood at 0-10 in the conference.  Alabama figured to be the favorite but it was a road match so you never knew what to expect.  Missouri came out hungry and took the doubles point and Alabama had to be wondering if they were ever going to get a conference win this year.  They did not have to wonder too long though as the Tide picked up victories on four of the top five courts with Cortina-Pou clinching it on Court 5 7-5, 6-4 and giving the Tide the 4-2 victory.

Arkansas

Arkansas entered the weekend at 1-8 in the SEC and 5-13 overall which meant that even if they could manage to push their #51 ranking up high enough to get an at-large bid into NCAAs it wouldn’t matter as they are well short of the .500 record you must possess to get in.  That left it all about pride for the ladies and trying to finish the regular season strong.  They started Friday night with a solid 4-2 win over Alabama in a match that the Hogs led 3-1 but got close when the three remaining matches all went to a third set.  Natsuho Arakawa was the first to finish though and she gave the Hogs the clincher with a 6-4 win on Court 4.  In what looked to be a mismatch against #17 Auburn on paper, Arkansas came out swinging and found themselves in a dogfight with the Tigers.  Arkansas grabbed the doubles point and another win from Natsuho Arawaka, this time on Court 3, to take a 2-0 lead.  Auburn posted wins on Courts 2 and 4 to even things up at 2-2 and then the teams split macthes on Courts 5 and 6 to find themselves tied at 3-3 with the match on Court one left to decide it.  Giulia Pairone managed to push Alizee Michaud to three sets but ultimately fell 6-2 in the third and the Hogs dropped a heartbreaker to Auburn 4-3.

Auburn

Auburn entered the week at #17 but they were only 4-5 in the SEC and they have not exactly been putting up stellar performances.  This week they would get Missouri and Arkansas, two of the bottom three teams in the standings, and a chance to regain some confidence and momentum.  In the end the Tigers did what they had to do, win a couple matches, but it certainly wasn’t in confidence building fashion.  The Tigers managed a 4-2 win over Missouri (0-9 SEC) but it was a five hour match that came down to a couple of three setters with Auburn holding a 3-2 lead and Taylor Russo clinched it with a 7-5 third set on Court 5.  Escaping from Columbia with the win the Tigers headed to Fayetteville to face Arkansas (2-8 SEC) and found themselves once again in a dogfight.  Auburn did what they needed to do and posted a 4-3 win when Alizee Michaud won 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 on Court 1 and give the Tigers the 4-3 win, but it was once again a very tough battle.

Florida

Florida started the weekend with the premier match on the ladies side in a tilt with conference leading South Carolina.  The match was moved up to 8 a.m. Saturday morning due to impending weather in South Carolina and they started with singles in hopes of speeding up the match.  It was nip and tuck the whole way as the Gators put up wins on Courts 1 and 6 while South Carolina posted wins of their own on Courts 4 and 5.  With the score knotted at 2-2 and Courts 2 and 3 both on-serve in the third set mother nature decided to intervene and in came the rain.  It was a very long rain delay as the teams finally got going again around 4 p.m. with Josie Kuhlman and McCartney Kessler left for the Gators.  The freshman Kessler came up big for the Gators as she started at 3-3 and won the first three games to finish the match 6-3 and a nice upset win over #31 Hadley Berg to give the Gators a 3-2 lead.  All eyes were then down to Kuhlman who was finally going to get to finish a match after her last six had been abandoned.  Kuhlman made sure not to waste the opportunity as she started at 2-1 after the rain delay and finished it out 6-2 giving the Gators the 4-2 win and a share of the conference lead with South Carolina at 10-1.  I was watching this match and what amazed me more than anything was the way Kuhlman finished.  In this day and age of teams rushing the court, players celebrating the clinch with chest pounds, racket tosses, etc. all Kuhlman did was walk back get her towel and come to the net for a handshake.  Very classy.

Georgia

Georgia entered the week at 7-2 in sole possession of 4th place in the SEC and looking to protect the double-bye for the conference tournament.  The Bulldogs had a Mississippi road swing on their plate, one that ended up being a few days longer than anticipated.  They started the swing at Ole Miss on Thursday in a very tight match.  Georgia dropped the doubles point but picked up singles wins on Courts 5 and 3 while Ole Miss picked up a win on Court 1 to knot the match at 2-2.  The remaining three matches all went three sets.  The teams split a pair of three setters on Courts 6 and 2 and we were once again knotted at 3-3.  It all came down to Court 4 where they remained on-serve to 4-5 but Elena Christofi found herself in a 15-40 hole facing three match points.  She saved the first two and got it to deuce, but dropped the final point and Ole Miss took Court 4 and the team match 4-3.  The Bulldogs then headed down to Starkville for a match with Mississippi State on Saturday, well that was the plan anyway.  The weather was poor and had forced the mens match from Friday to be moved to Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the women to follow.  The men played their match in chilly 40 degree temps, but Georgia exercised their option to pass on the match due to the temps (NCAA rule is 50 degrees unless coaches agree) and the match was postponed.  No officials were available for Sunday so the match was rescheduled for Monday at 10 a.m.  Georgia must have enjoyed their rest and time in Starkville (either that or they wanted out as quick as possible) as they ripped through Mississippi State with a pair of 6-1 wins in doubles and three straight set singles wins.  Georgia won every set and did not drop more than three games in any set in a very dominating performance on a court where Mississippi State had been very impressive this year including a win over Vanderbilt.

Kentucky

Kentucky welcomed LSU and Texas A&M to town this week with in what appeared to possibly be some competitve matches.  While Kentucky was the higher ranked team, they had only posted one win over any team currently in the Top 25 (Baylor).  With the matches moved indoors due to weather and a nice home court advantage the Wildcats stepped up with a pair of 4-1 victories.  Against LSU the Wildcats took doubles and jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before eventually clinching the match 4-1 on sophomore Diana Tkachenko’s three set win on Court 4.  Saturday brought th Aggies to town for senior day where the Wildcats honored Emily Fanning and Mami Adachi.  The day was almost a carbon copy of Thursday as the Wildcats once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead before eventually clinching it 4-1 with senior Emily Fanning ending it on Court 1 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.  The pair of wins moved the Wildcats above the .500 mark in the conference at 6-5 in a 6th place tie with Auburn.

LSU

LSU saw a rough road trip to Kentucky and Vanderbilt this week that went about like you might have expected.  The Tigers fell behind 3-0 at Kentucky before Jessica Golovin picked up a win on Court 2 to make it 3-1 and move her record to 16-2 on the year.  The remaining three matches were all in third sets giving the Tigers hope but those hopes were quickly dashed as Kentucky closed it out 4-1 when Kennan Johnson dropped her match on Court 4. The Tigers made the short trip down the road to Nashville to face the #2 Vanderbilt Commodores.  LSU dropped the doubles point and straight set matchs on Courts 2, 4 and 5 to end it 4-0.

Mississippi State

Mississippi State was set to host Tennessee and Georgia this week but the weather in Starkville did not want to cooperate.  The weather had not turned yet as of Thursday and the Bulldogs were able to get the match in with Tennessee.  The Bulldogs started with the doubles point and then Madison Harrison posted a very impressive 6-1, 6-0 win on Court 1 to make it 2-0.  The Vols came back to even it up 2-2 with wins on Courts 2 and 5.  Anastasia Rentouli followed with a 7-5, 7-5 on Court 4 to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead with the remaining two courts in a third set.  Magda Adaloglou provided the clincher on Court 3 with a 6-2 third set and the host Bulldogs took the 4-2 victory.  By Friday the weather turned bad in Starkville postponing the men’s match until Saturday but the temps were in the low 40’s and the Georgia exercised their option not to play as it was below 50 degrees with no indoor facility available.  The match was rescheduled for Monday and the Bulldogs took a tough beating in a quick 4-0 decision where they failed to win a set in any match.

Missouri

The Tigers were still looking for their first conference win as they hosted Auburn and Alabama this week.  The Tigers put up a couple great fights in 4-2 and 4-3 losses but in the end they leave the week at 0-11 in the conference.  Mizzou played an extremely tight match with #17 Auburn on Friday and were on the verge of a huge upset as they found themselves down 3-2 but with two matches in third sets.  Ellie Wright got to 5-5 in the third on Court 5 but eventually fell 7-5 as Auburn clinched the match 4-2.  On Sunday Missouri ttok the doubles point for the second time in as many matches but once again ended up falling 4-2 in a tightly contested match.

Ole Miss

The Rebels welcomed Georgia for a top 10 showdown on Thursday.  Ole Miss picked up the doubles point and the team traded singles wins until they found themselves locked up 3-3 with everything coming down to a third set on Court 4.  Anna Vrbenska took a 5-4 lead on-serve in the third and jumped up 15-40 with three chances to break and clinch.  Georgia managed to save the first two but Vrbenska would not be denied and she broke on the deuce point to clinch the 4-3 victory for the Rebels.  Saturday the Lady Rebels found themselves in a slightly easier match as they overwhelmed visiting Tennessee in a 4-0 victory.

South Carolina

South Carolina played host to Florida Saturday in a match for the conference lead.  The match was moved up to 8 a.m. due to weather concerns but the weather found its way into the match regardless and introduced a long rain delay with the match tied 2-2 and two singles matches left on court.  The match was started with singles play in an effort to try to beat the rain, which ultimately failed.  When the Gamecocks returned to the court they were at 1-2 on Court 2 and 3-3 on Court 3, but got off to a slow start and dropped those matches 3-6 and 2-6, respectively, handing the Gators a 4-2 win and a share of the conference lead.

Tennessee

Tennessee made the trip west to visit the Mississippi schools with a chance to enhance their SEC and NCAA tournament prospects.  Unfortunately for the Vols its a trip they would just as soon forget as they dropped a 4-2 decision at Mississippi State and a 4-0 decision at Ole Miss.  With the losses Tennessee drops to 2-9 in the conference and two wins behind LSU which almost assures them of an 11th place or worse finish in the SEC and a first day match in the SEC tournament.  They should remain at #31 in the NCAA rankings which is still in a solid position to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

Texas A&M

The Aggies made visits to Nashville and Lexington this week to face Vanderbilt and Kentucky.  The match in Nashville went as most would have expected as the Aggies dropped a 4-0 decision to the #2 Commodores and readied themselves for the trip to Kentucky.  The match with Kentucky looked to be a great possibility of picking up a quality road win as the Wildcats held a solid ranking but had only beaten one current top 25 team this year.  The Aggies put up a fight but fell 4-1 and dropped to 5-6 in the conference and find themselves alone in 9th place in the conference.  The  Aggies have all but assured themselves of a first day bye in the SEC and will likely be looking at an 8 vs. 9 or 7 vs. 10 matchup on Day 2.

Vanderbilt

The Commodores continued their roll with a pair of 4-0 wins over Texas A&M and LSU at home.  With the events that transpired in Columbia on Saturday the Dores now find themselves in a 3 way tie at 10-1 in the SEC and a huge final weekend coming up.  I wasn’t able to see any of the matches in Nashville but it seems like the Davis Cup matches being held down the road at Belmont University over the weekend should have brought a great tennis vibe to the matches.
