Friday was a jammed packed day of college tennis with 46 NCAA Tournament matches taking place. The women took center stage with all 16 regionals in action while 7 of the 16 men’s regional kicked off as well. All 23 of the seeded teams won 4-0 except for the Oklahoma State women who defeated UMKC 4-1. There were a slew of great women’s matches with UCF, Kansas State, Texas A&M, Illinois, Kansas, Baylor, and Winthrop winning by 4-3 scores while Mississippi State, Virginia, Wake Forest, Tulsa, and Oregon won by a 4-2 score. The three teams that won by 4-1 scores were Wichita State, Clemson, and the aforementioned Oklahoma State. The higher ranked team won 28 of 32 women’s matches with Clemson, Wichita State, Winthrop, and Kansas State the four lower ranked winners.

UCF and Winthrop won their first NCAA Tournament matches in school history with UCF defeating FIU 4-3 while Winthrop upset #20 Auburn 4-3. This was UCF’s fifth NCAA appearance while Winthrop was making its 16th trip to the dance with all 16 of those appearances coming since the year 2000.

10 of the 14 men’s matches played on Friday ended with a 4-0 score with Kentucky’s win over Virginia Tech and Baylor’s win over Arizona State the two that most wouldn’t have expected to be that lopsided. The other four matches all saw lower ranked teams pull off upset wins over their higher ranked opponents.

The top two teams in the American Athletic Conference were both knocked out with #77 South Alabama winning its first NCAA match in 10 years with a 4-3 win over #21 Memphis while #42 Alabama won its first NCAA match in 9 years with a 4-1 win over No. 23 Tulane. Coincidentally South Alabama’s last win came over Alabama.

California, ranked No. 34, blew past No. 24 NC State 4-1 with the Bears dropping the doubles point but then coming back in singles to win 10 of 11 sets.

Minnesota, ranked No. 37, ousted last year’s semifinalist No. 19 Georgia 4-3. The Gophers dropped the doubles point but won all the close sets in singles with senior Felix Corwin fighting off a match point in the second set to clinch the victory with a 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-2 win over fellow senior Wayne Montgomery. The loss by Georgia marks the first time since 2003 that the Bulldogs failed to make it to at least the Sweet 16.

WOMEN’S RESULTS

Kansas State won its first NCAA Tournament match since 2003, when it advanced to the Sweet 16, with a come from behind 4-3 win over Kentucky. After dropping the doubles point K-State tied it up with a quick win at No. 5 due to a retirement. Kentucky won a pair of matches in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 4 to go ahead 3-1 before K-State started its comeback.

K-State’s Margot Decker won in three sets at No. 1 to make it 3-2 and then Ines Mesquita tied it up with a 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6.

Kentucky looked like it had the match in the bag when Justina Mikulskyte led Maria Linares 5-2 in the third. Linares took an almost 10 medical timeout to get her leg treated and then gutted out a tough hold from 40/30 to make it 5-3. Linares then broke at love to put it back on serve at 5-4 and then she held at love to tie it at 5-all. Mikulskyte held on the no-ad point with a forehand winner to go up 6-5 but Linares held from 40/30 to send the match to a tiebreak. Linares snagged the early mini-break but Mikulskyte won both points on Linares’s serve to go up 2-1. Linares took the next three to go up 4-2 before Mikulskyte evened it at 4-4. Linares regained the mini-break at 5-4 but then had a forehand hit the tape and pop back to make it 5-5. Linares earned her first match point with a service winner for 6-5 but Mikulskyte evened it at 6-6 with a service winner herself. Linares earned her second match point, after Mikulskyte missed a backhand wide, and then she closed it out after Mikulskyte netted a forehand.

Texas A&M avenged a 4-3 regular-season loss to Rice with a thrilling 4-3 win of its own in the opening match of the day in Austin. Texas A&M took the early lead after taking the doubles point but Rice came back in singles with four first sets.

Rice’s Lindsey Hodge and Michaela Haet won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 3 while A&M’s Tatiana Makarova won in straight sets at No. 5. A&M’s Riley McQuaid put the Aggies in front 3-2 with a 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 and it looked like they were just seconds away from a win with Macarena Olivares leading 5-2 in the third at No. 2 while Iulia Ivascu led 4-1 in the third at No. 6.

However, Rice wouldn’t go away and Wendy Zhang would come back to win the final five games at No. 2 to take it 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 and Savannah Durkin won four straight games at No. 6 to go in front 5-4 and she had a pair of match points on Ivascu’s serve. Ivascu fought both off to hold for 5-5 and after a pair of holds they’d go to a tiebreak. Durkin would earn another match point at 6-5*, her sixth of the match including the three in the second set, but after Ivascu barely hit a second serve over the net she’d hit a forehand winner a couple of shots later to even it at 6-6. After the changeover Ivascu would close out the match on the next point with a forehand winner that Durkin would call out. Since it was the final match left on court the other chair umpires were covering the lines and when they overruled the call since it was Durkin’s third overrule it resulted in a point penalty and that was the match.

Winthrop pulled off the stunner of the day by defeating No. 20 Auburn 4-3. Junior Aida Kelic clinched the win by coming out on top in the only match to go three sets. Kelic broke back from 15/40 to go up 6-5 and this time she’s shut the door on Russo with a hold from 40/30.
