It was a tremendous week on the pro tour with four guys winning singles titles and another nine winning doubles titles. If you forgot to check out my Saturday recap may sure you give that a read to see how Steve Johnson, Benjamin Lock, and Roberto Cid won singles titles and Nate Lammons and Dane Webb won doubles titles.

$25K Tulsa, OK, USA F21 (Hard) – TCU rising junior Cameron Norrie won his second career Futures singles title with a quick 53-minute win over Ryan Haviland (Stanford ’02). Haviland held in a three-deuce game to start the match but Norrie won the next nine games to take an insurmountable 6-1, 3-0 lead. Haviland held from 40/30 to pull within 3-1 but Norrie won the next three to close it out 6-1, 6-1. (Will post a picture if I see one)

$10K Rochester, NY, USA F20 (Clay) – Juan Benitez Chavarriaga (Baylor ’15) came up short in his first career singles final by falling in straight sets to #411 Kaichi Uchida. Benitez Chavarriaga jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set but he’d only win one point in his next two service games and would lose five straight games to drop the set 6-4. Uchida got the one and only break of the second set when he broke Benitez Chavarriaga from 30/40 to take a 3-2 lead. Uchida would serve it out a few games later to win it 6-4, 6-4.
$25K Richmond, Canada, F3 (Hard) – The top seed Jason Jung (Michigan ’11) was seeking his fourth career pro singles title but it wasn’t to be as he fell to #356 Peter Polansky in straight sets. Polansky won the first five games of the match and ended up taking the opening set 6-1 in just 24 minutes. Polansky broke Jung at love to start the second set and he’d make that one break lead hold up and would serve it out from 40/15 to win it 6-1, 6-4 in 1 hour and 9 minutes.

$10K Kaltenkirchen, Germany, F4 (Clay) – The top seed Yannick Maden (Clemson ’13) won his semifinal match over Jonas Luetjen (Ole Miss ’13) 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 and since Saturday’s schedule was rained out he had to return to the court a few hours later for the finals against #456 Gregoire Jacq. Maden fell behind 3-1 in the opening set before winning seven straight games to take the first set 6-3 and go up 2-0 in the second. Unfortunately for Maden he would lose the next three games and was then forced to retire after twisting his ankle so it went in the books as a 6-3, 2-3 ret. loss.

Doubles

ATP 250 Nottingham, Great Britain (Grass) – Dominic Inglot (Virginia ’09) and Daniel Nestor knocked off the ATP #7 team of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo in straight sets. Inglot/Nestor broke from 15/40 to go up 6-5 in the first and then they’d hold from 40/30 to take the opening set 7-5. Inglot/Nestor broke to start the second set and they would have a match point on Dodig/Melo’s 3-5 service game but they weren’t able to convert on the no-ad point. Inglot/Nestor would get broke on the no-ad point to make it 5-5, Dodig/Melo held on no-ad for 6-5, and then Inglot/Nestor held on no-ad to send it to a tiebreak. Inglot/Nestor went up 3-0 in the tiebreak and won a few points later 7-5, 7-6(4).

Inglot has now won 22 professional doubles titles (5 ATP/12 Futures/5 Challenger) and currently holds an ATP doubles ranking of 29.

$42.5K Milan, Italy, Challenger (Clay)Max Schnur (Columbia ’15) and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela (Texas ’09) won their first doubles title as a team with a three set win over Alessandro Motti and Hsien-Yin Peng. Motti and Peng won the opening set 6-1 and then the second set was a break-free set that ended up in a tiebreak. The first nine points of the tiebreak went to the server which put Schnur and Reyes-Varela up 5-4 and then they’d win the next two points against serve to take the tiebreak 7-4. Schnur and Reyes-Varela went up 5-0 in the third set supertiebreak and would cruise to the finish line and take it 1-6, 7-6(4), 1-0 (10-5).

It was doubles title No. 21 for Reyes-Varela (18 Futures/3 Challenger) who is now just nine spots off his career high ranking of 100.

Schnur has won eight doubles titles (6 Futures/2 Challengers) and now has a new career high ranking of 130 – not bad for a guy that’s been on tour for a little over 12 months!!

$10K Barranquilla, Colombia, F2 Futures – Roberto Quiroz (USC ’15) won his fourth double title this year, and 15th of his career, as he and Luis Patino won a hard fought match over the team of Christopher Diaz-Figueroa and Wilfredo Gonzalez (Miami ’15). Quiroz/Patino got the only break of the first set when they broke from 15/40 to take the set 6-4. Each team broke once in the second set but it was Quiroz/Patino taking the tiebreak and the match 6-4, 7-6(7).

$10K Havre, Belgium, F2 (Clay) – Sander Gille (East Tennessee State ’12) & Joran Vliegen (East Carolina ’14) won their 14th doubles title as a team when they defeated Adam and Jason Taylor in straight sets. Gille/Vliegen broke a 2-2 tie by winning the next six games to close out the opening set 6-2 and took a 2-0 lead in the second. Gille/Vliegen maintained that one break lead and served it out from 40/15 to win it 6-2, 6-4 in just 57 minutes.  Vliegen and Gille both came into the match with career high doubles rankings with Vliegen at 220 and Gille at 221.

$10K Rochester, NY, USA F20 (Clay) Hans Hach (Abilene Christian ’13) and Gavin Van Peperzeel won their first doubles title as a team with a straight set win over Damon Gooch (Elon ’09) and Kaichi Uchida. Hach/Van Peperzeel led 5-2 in the first set but they got broke at 5-3 on the no-ad so the set would eventually go to a tiebreak. Hach/Van Peperzeel broke a 5-5 tie by taking the last two points to win the tiebreak 7-5. Hach/Van Peperzeel broke at love to go up 2-1 in the second and they’d roll from there to win it 7-6(5), 6-2.

It was the second week in a row that Hach had won a doubles title with last week’s title coming with Uchida. It was Hach’s 3rd title this year and 13th overall.
