Sunday may not have been the most scintillating day of tennis, compared to say Friday, but there were still plenty of storylines to keep us all entertained.

Two of the top teams in the American Athletic Conference tangled on Sunday in New Orleans as No. 27 Tulane hosted No. 22 South Florida. South Florida picked up a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles while Tulane won 6-3 at No. 2. South Florida served for the match at No. 3 doubles up 5-4 but Tulane’s Alex and Ian Van Cott broke and then held for 6-5. South Florida’s Robert Cid and Ignacio Gonzales-Muniz held for 6-6 and then the Bulls duo broke a 4-4 tie in the breaker by winning the final 3 points to take it 7-4.

Each team would take three first sets in singles and the guy who won the first set ended up winning on every court except No. 1.

South Florida’s Dominic Cotrone, Peter Bertran, and Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz would each win in straight sets with Cotrone clinching the match at No. 3. The teams played the remaining matches out with Tulane’s Constantin Schmitz winning 7-6 in the third at No. 2 while Tulane’s Tyler Schick won 7-5 in the third at No. 6.

The featured singles matchup at No. 1 between the ITA No. 1 Dominik Koepfer and ITA No. 5 Roberto Cid ended up going to a third set supertiebreak after each claimed a 7-6 set. Cid would hand Koepfer his first dual-match loss of the year and snap his 21-match winning streak by taking the supertiebreak 10-3.

It’s too bad that match didn’t get to play out to a full conclusion but maybe we’ll see a rematch in two weeks at the conference tournament in Memphis.

Post-Match Quotes from Joey Knight’s Tampa Bay Times article
“(Cid) was super sharp,” said Bulls coach Matt Hill,  “It was obviously a really, really high-level match, one he’s been looking forward to all week. There were a ton of momentum swings, especially early on.”
“I wouldn’t say (Cid) squandered (the first set), I’d say Dominik took it,” Hill said.
“I was telling Roberto he was doing all the right stuff…he just kind of stayed the course and was able to take him, and it was pretty windy here. To see that level being played in these conditions is really, really rare.”
Post-Match Quotes from Tulane’s recap
“Today we saw a lot of good things from our guys, but South Florida is a very solid team,” Tulane head coach Mark Booras explained. “Both USF and us have had great years so we knew it was going to be a great match. We need to keep on investing and putting ourselves in the fire.”

Second-ranked TCU won its 26th straight match at home and 15th straight match overall with a fairly routine 4-0 win over short-handed Oklahoma State. The Cowboys were playing without Julian Cash (No. 1 singles/doubles) and Lukas Finzelberg (No. 5 singles/No. 3 doubles) due to injury so everybody else had to move up at least one spot in the lineup.

TCU took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and then the Horned Frogs took the opening set in singles on five of six courts.

Jerry Lopez and Trevor Johnson each picked up quick wins at No. 5 and No. 6 and then Guillermo Nunez clinched the match at No. 3. The total match time was just under two hours.

Post-Match Quotes from head coach David Roditi via TCU’s recap

“Today wasn’t easy because the conditions were a little bit breezy and it got a little swirly. I was really proud of our guys that kept on fighting especially Cameron (Norrie), (Alex) Rybakov and (Eduardo) Nava. You can tell that they weren’t very comfortable with the conditions and the situation but they kept fighting and they kept hanging in there and making the best of it. That is the kind of attitude that we are going to need for the rest of the way.
“We played Oklahoma State earlier this year and they had three guys in that lineup that they didn’t have today. We didn’t get their best lineup today and at the same time, everyone can play and I didn’t want our guys to lose their focus because they knew this wasn’t their best lineup. I am proud of Trevor (Johnson) for going out there and being very business like and taking care of his match. Jerry (Lopez) took care of his match and Guillermo (Nuez) was in a great situation to clinch. I am just proud of our guys. It was a tough week and we asked a lot of them to be playing three top 25 teams in one week. I am looking forward to having a whole week to prepare for a very gutty and competitive team at Texas. Those coaches have done a great job of getting the Longhorns to where they are at right now. They are getting the most out of their players and that is a sign of good coaching and we will be ready for that.”

“It was great to see Andrew get us on the board quickly in singles and then Spencer did a great job of turning his match around after the first set,” Roddick said. “Max was really solid in closing out his match at number six.”
Post-Match Quotes from head coach Michael Center via Texas’s recap

On the Oklahoma match: You just have to give Oklahoma credit today. When we had opportunities for momentum, we didn’t get it. On Friday night we took advantage of all of them and today, I felt like no matter whatever happened we couldn’t quite get on top of them. They got on top of us today and they did a good job. With Andrew Harris in there playing well, that’s a really good team. We just have to learn from it. We have some big matches coming up and we’ll just keep pushing forward.

In what has to be the one of the longest no-ad matches in college tennis history, it was UMKC defeating Grand Canyon 4-3 in a match that took an astounding six hours and fourteen minutes.

Due to rain the match was moved indoors to a three-court facility with singles play starting first. UMKC swept the top three courts but GC swept the bottom three with No. 4 and No. 5 going three sets.

The doubles point was played to decide the match and UMKC won all three courts within 60 seconds to take the point and the match. Both teams ended up sharing the regular season WAC title with New Mexico State.

UMKC had a pretty good recap so give it a read.

Post-Match Quotes from GCU’s recap

“We are pleased to be sharing the conference title with two other great teams,” head coach Greg Prudhomme said. “The guys came to as close losing as they did winning throughout the match. We had a lot of things going against us but I am so proud of how hard our guys fought.”
“We would have loved to be the champion by ourselves,” Prudhomme added. “We had one goal before the season started and that was to be the WAC champion in the regular season and that is what we are. The amount of work the guys have put in this year has been fantastic and we are now in company with some great teams.”
