ACC:
#5 [1] Virginia vs. #16 [4] North Carolina – 10am est – Virginia won both the regular season meetings with the Wahoos beating UNC 6-1 in Charlottesville and blanking them 4-0 at the National Indoors in Chicago. Neither match was particularly close though the match at UVA was the better of the two with UNC taking 3 sets and losing several 7-5.

North Carolina is basically going to give away #5 or #6 singles because if a hobbled Esben Hess-Olesen plays at 5 he’ll likely retire early-on or go down meekly and if he sits the drop off to its #7/#8 players is pretty severe. North Carolina needs the doubles point to have any reasonable hope of an upset but I don’t see Virginia dropping the point for the second day in a row. I like Virginia in doubles and Mitchell Frank, Collin Altamirano, and JC Aragone at 2, 3, and 6. I think Brayden Schnur has a good shot at 1 and Jack Murray is more than capable of playing with Kwiatkowski at 4 but in the end Virginia wins. Prediction: Virginia 4-1
#11 [2] Wake Forest vs. #55 [10] Georgia Tech – 10am est – Wake Forest won the regular season meeting in Atlanta 5-2 but it was a close match that saw Wake win both #1 and #2 doubles in a tiebreak and then win the 2 deciding singles matches in a 3rd set.

Georgia Tech is playing lights out right now and they come into this one with nothing to lose while Wake Forest is definitely considered the heavy favorite. I think Georgia Tech finds a way to take the doubles point and I like Segura and Kay in singles but Wake’s top 2 of Rubin and Bogaerts should win along with Mansouri and Seraphim. Prediction: Wake Forest 4-3
Big 12:
#2 [2] Baylor (20-4) vs. #6 [3] TCU (21-6) – 1pm est – Baylor won the regular season meeting at home 4-0 though all 6 of the singles matches and all of the 3 doubles match will be different this time. TCU is coming off a 4-0 thrashing of Oklahoma State while Baylor won its regular season finale last Saturday over Texas Tech 4-1.

Baylor’s strength all year has been at doubles with BU an outstanding 22-1 while TCU is 15-10. TCU has won the doubles point the last 3 times out so I think they’ll keep it close but Baylor still takes it. Lenz has to be considered the sizable favorite at #1 as is Rios at #6 but I think each of the other 4 courts is up for grabs.
Lupieri beat Nunez 6-2, 6-0 back in October but Nunez is a different player now and has won 17 of his last 18 to rise up from #6 in the lineup to #2. Lupieri has dropped 2 straight and 4 of his last 7 so he’ll have to play better to beat Nunez. Cameron Norrie had a nice fall but then struggled a little in the middle of the season but he’s now rebounded to win his last 5 while Tchoutakian has won 4 of his last 5. Diego Galeano has dealt with some injuries this year but he’s won 5 of 6 since returning to the lineup while Lugones has been tearing it up and is currently riding a 9-match winning streak. Mate Zsiga has won 8 in a row (it’d probably be 14 in a row if his matches hadn’t been stopped due to the clinch) while Arnau Dachs has won 4 in a row and 5 of 6. Both Zsiga and Dachs have played at #1 and #2 singles in the past so each has a big time game.
TCU has won 7 in a row and the guys are playing with a ton of confidence so I think they’ll give Baylor all they want. I do like Baylor in doubles and Lenz and Rios in singles but I like Nunez, Norrie, and Lugones for TCU at 2, 3, and 4. I think it could come down to a 3rd set at #5 with the large vocal crowd pushing the Zsiga over the top. Prediction: Baylor 4-3
#1 [1] Oklahoma (22-2) vs. #10 [4] Texas (19-5) – 1pm est – Oklahoma won the regular season meeting at home 4-1 and all but the top 2 singles spots will be rematches. It looks like none of the doubles courts will be rematches with Oklahoma tentatively scheduled to switch up its doubles pairings to find a spark for the postseason. Oklahoma hasn’t played since beating Oklahoma State last Sunday while Texas beat Texas Tech yesterday in a hard fought 4-1 win.

Oklahoma won the doubles point the first time and I think OU’s new pairings will get them the point again today.
You got two of the best players in college tennis playing at #1 singles as Axel Alvarez puts his 19-0 dual match record on the line against Soren Hess-Olesen who was 15-0 until he dropped 3 of his last 5. Andrew Harris has won 5 in a row and 7 of 8 while Lloyd Glasspool has won 3 straight and he picked up a nice win over Felipe Soares yesterday. Dane Webb has split his last 6 matches after being nearly unbeatable earlier in the season while Adrien Berkowicz has dropped 2 straight after winning the previous 4. Alex Ghilea has won 6 of 7 while George Goldhoff has won 2 of 3 with a slew of unfinished matches sprinkled in. Goldhoff clinched UT’s win over Texas Tech by coming back from a set down to beat Jolan Cailleau – Cailleau happens to be the only to beat Alex Ghilea in the last 6 weeks. Spencer Papa snapped a 2-match losing streak last Sunday by beating Okie State’s Lukas Finzelberg while Nick Naumann has dropped 6 of 8 though he was up 3-0 in the 3rd yesterday against Texas Tech’s Francisco Zambon when the match was halted. Florin Bragusi has split his last 2 matches though 4 of his last 6 have gone unfinished. 1 of those unfinished matches came against Clement Homs who is 7-1 on the year after returning from a knee injury.
Texas has a shot at 1, 3, and 6 but I like Andrew Harris, Alex Ghilea, and Spencer Papa at 2, 4, and 5 to give OU the 4 points it needs. If Texas were to take the doubles point meaning OU would need 4 singles wins then I’d take Alvarez at #1 for the 4th point. Prediction: Oklahoma 4-1

Northwestern’s only chance at pulling the stunner would be by taking the doubles point and getting wins at 1, 3, and 6. Prediction: Illinois 4-0
#12 [2] Ohio State (24-7) vs. #23 [3] Minnesota (20-6) – 1pm est – Ohio State won the regular season meeting in Columbus 4-2 though it was a very tight match. Ohio State won the deciding court in doubles in a tiebreak before winning 3 straight set matches at 2, 4, and 6 with Minnesota winning at 1 and the other match going to a 3rd set. Minnesota is coming off a huge weekend that saw the Gophers beat both Illinois and Northwestern 4-3 in matches that came down a 3rd set tiebreak in the deciding match. Ohio State has won 8 in a row since it went down to Illinois back on March 29th though the competition in those 8 matches wasn’t the toughest (except Minnesota).

Outside of Baylor I don’t think there’s been a better doubles team than Stanford with the Cardinal 19-3 on the year including wins over USC in each of the first two meetings. USC had dropped the doubles point 3 straight times until they blew out UCLA yesterday which came as a bit of a surprise.

Stanford may be the #1 seed but USC has to be considered the favorite. I like Stanford in doubles and Tom Fawcett at #1 but I like USC everywhere else. Stanford’s best path to a win would be the same as their last match against USC – doubles, 1, 2, and 6 singles however USC has shuffled 2 and 3 and I think that could be the difference.
