South Carolina’s Gabriel Friedrich knocked off teammate Harrison O’Keefe 6-3, 6-7(0), 6-4 in a live streamed match on ESPN3 to win the top singles flight at the USTA Clay Court Invitational in Orlando.
Comments from SC recap:
“What a way to end the tournament, South Carolina head coach Josh Goffi said. “I couldn’t be more proud of Gabriel and Harrison. Both kept raising their level to trump the other’s momentum gains and, consequently, we ended up with a very high-level match at the end. They were respectful, yet extremely competitive, and that’s one of the hardest things to do when you’re playing your teammate. It’s disappointing that there had to be a loser today because both of them played great and got better throughout the match. In the end, the Gamecocks won, and it’s a great day for our program.

#471 Evan King (Michigan ’13) won his third career pro singles title with a 6-4, 6-4 win over #290 Bastian Trinker at the $10K Birmingham, Alabama USA F31 Future (Clay). King broke Trinker in the opening game of the match and held that break lead to take the first set 6-4. In the second set King went up an early break but Trinker broke back in a 6-deuce game to even it at 3-3. King would break again to go up 5-4 and then he managed to serve out to clinch it. When these 18 points are added in next week King’s ranking will climb to around 416 which will be a new career high.
#711 Eric Johnson (USC ’15) won his second career pro singles title with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over #750 Tim Van Rijthoven at the $10K Heraklion, Greece F10 Future (Hard). After Johnson held for 4-4 in the third set he would break Van Ritjthoven at love and then hold from love to seal it. Johnson’s ranking will climb to a new career high of 669 this week and then next week when these 18 points are added in he should be around 561.
#455 Nik Scholtz (Ole Miss ’15) won his seventh career pro singles title with a 7-6(5), 7-5 win over #411 Pascal Brunner at the $10K Stellenbosch, South Africa F1 Future (Hard). Brunner broke from 15-40 to knot it at 5-5 but Scholtz would break back by coming from 15-40 down to win a 4-deuce game. Scholtz then held from 40-15 to wrap up title number 7. When these 18 points are added in next week Scholtz will have a new career high ranking of 412.
#106 Benjamin Becker (Baylor ’05) was looking for his first singles title since Eckental in 2013 but he wasn’t able to pull it out as he fell to #153 Mikhail Youzhny 7-5, 6-3 in the finals of the $35K Eckental, Germany Challenger (Carpet-Indoor).
