The new rankings are out and for the second week in a row we have a new No. 1 with North Carolina overtaking Virginia by almost 9 points. TCU stays at No. 3, Ohio State stays at No. 4 and Oklahoma State moves back ahead of UCLA at No. 5 with the Bruins at No. 6. Further down below I have a more in-depth breakdown of the top 6 and how the points were calculated.

This set of rankings used each team’s six best wins and all losses while next week’s rankings will use each’s seven best wins.

Vanderbilt, Auburn, and Pepperdine were the biggest upward movers. Vanderbilt rose 19 spots from No. 68 to No. 49 after beating both Kentucky and Tennessee on the road while fellow SEC member Auburn rose at least 24 spots from unranked to No. 52 after stunning then No. 22 Ole Miss 4-3. Pepperdine rose 18 spots from No. 71 to No. 53 after the Waves upset then No. 26 Memphis.

Georgia was the biggest mover inside the top 25 with the Bulldogs jumping up from No. 19 to No. 11 after winning at South Carolina and then beating No. 4 Ohio State. Florida also made a nice move from No. 24 to No. 16 after the Gators steamrolled Arkansas and Ole Miss.

The following teams moved up at least 8 spots versus the last rankings – movement in ( ):
#11 Georgia (+8)
#16 Florida (+8)
#29 Columbia (+10)
#36 SMU (+8)
#49 Vanderbilt (+19)
#52 Auburn (at least +24)
#53 Pepperdine (+18)
#61 Utah (+13)
#64 Miami FL (at least +12)

The following teams dropped down at least 8 spots versus the last rankings (still ranked):
#21 Arkansas (-8)
#30 Baylor (-9)
#54 Purdue (-8)
#62 Middle Tennessee State (-8)
#70 Utah State (-12)
#72 Lamar (-11)
#73 Penn (-8)
#75 Western Michigan (-8)

These 3 teams entered the rankings after being unranked and here is why they are now ranked
#52 Auburn – defeated then No. 22 Ole Miss
#64 Miami FL – previous win over Florida St increased in value after the Noles jumped up 28 spots
#71 Nebraska – defeated then #61 Lamar

These 3 teams dropped out of the rankings with last week’s rankings in ( ):
Duke (69) – lost to Notre Dame plus previously ranked wins over Tennessee and Duke were de-valued when both of those teams fell out of the rankings
UC Irvine (73) – didn’t play last week but earlier losses to Baylor and San Diego counted against them more when both of those teams dropped last week.
San Diego State (75) – lost to Texas Tech, Memphis, and Harvard

Tulane senior Dominik Koepfer retained his top spot in the singles rankings with his dual-match record increasing to 12-0 which includes 8 ranked wins. Koepfer has won 17 straight matches with his last loss coming on October 12th in the finals of the ITA All-American Championship.

Ohio State sophomore Mikael Torpegaard moved up from No. 5 to No. 2 after picking up wins over No. 4 Roberto Cid and No. 27 Austin Smith. Torpegaard is 13-0 in dual-match play with 9 of those wins over ranked opponents.

Florida’s Gordon Watson and Diego Hidalgo claimed the top spot in the doubles rankings after defeating Arkansas’s Mike Redlicki and Giammarco Micolani. Watson and Hidalgo also have a win over Texas Tech’s Hugo Dojas and Felipe Soares with the Red Raider duo moving up to No. 1 in the last ranking period.

I’ll have a post either tomorrow or on Thursday that breaks down the singles rankings versus each player’s Universal Tennis Ratings.

Here is the ITA’s release which breaks down the rankings by conference affiliation.

Below I’ll breakdown the team Top 6 looking at the 6 best wins that were used in the rankings this week along with other quality ranked wins. I also listed the point totals gained from the best wins and losses to come up with the computer score.

North Carolina moves back to No. 1 as I expected with the FSU loss not hurting as much after the Noles jumped up plus UNC’s best six wins were all over top 15 teams. North Carolina added a quality road win at NC State over the weekend plus blanked unranked Louisville.
  • 6 Best Wins (525.60): at #1 Virginia, #4 Ohio State, #5 UCLA, #8 Texas Tech, #11 Illinois, #15 Oklahoma
  • Other Quality Wins: #33 NC State (2X+1 on road), #68 Vanderbilt
  • Losses (6.5): at #23 Florida State
  • Computer Score:  525.60/6.5 = 80.86 (was 76.58)
  • What’s Coming Up: Clemson (3/25), Virginia Tech (3/27), Virginia (4/1), Wake Forest (4/3)
  • Comments: UNC won’t have any problem with Clemson but the Virginia Tech match will probably be pretty close so they’ll need to be focused on it and not looking ahead to Virginia.

Virginia falls back to No. 2 despite blanking both NC State and Florida State over the weekend. The reason for the drop is because UNC’s 6 best wins were a good bit better.

  • 6 Best Wins (457): #3 TCU, #5 UCLA, #10 Wake Forest, #15 Oklahoma, #17 Kentucky, #23 Florida State
  • Other Quality Wins: #29 Tulsa, #33 NC State, #34 San Diego, #40 Virginia Tech
  • Losses (6.4): #2 North Carolina, #11 Illinois
  • Computer Score:  457/6.4 = 71.41 (was 77.17)
  • What’s Coming Up: Notre Dame (3/25), Boston College (3/26), at North Carolina (4/1), at Duke (4/3)
  • Comments:  This weekend will be a warm-up for the North Carolina match which will be a week from Friday in Chapel Hill.
TCU stays at No. 3 after picking up three top-40 wins last week over Tulsa, Dartmouth, and Columbia.

  • 6 Best Wins (447.2): #6 Oklahoma State, #11 Illinois (2X +1 on road), #12 USC, at #16 South Florida, #29 Tulsa
  • Other Quality Wins: at #31 Wisconsin, #35 Dartmouth, #39 Columbia, #42 Stanford
  • Losses (6.4): #1 Virginia, #14 California
  • Computer Score:  447.2/6.4 = 69.88 (was 74.59)
  • What’s Coming Up: Northwestern (3/22), at Texas A&M (3/28), Rice/UT Arlington (4/1)
  • Comments: TCU had a big one today against Northwestern and then has another big one next Monday in College Station against Texas A&M. TCU starts its conference schedule the weekend of April 8th with both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State coming to Fort Worth. With TCU’s win over Northwestern there is a really good chance that they’ll move up to No. 2 next week.
Ohio State stays at No. 4 after picking a quality road win at South Florida last Thursday before falling at Georgia on Sunday.

  • 6 Best Wins (429.3): #9 Texas A&M (2X), at #15 Oklahoma, at #16 South Florida, #18 Texas, #21 Baylor
  • Other Quality Wins: #24 Florida, #27 Penn State, #40 Virginia Tech, at #51 Notre Dame
  • Losses (6.5): #2 North Carolina, at #19 Georgia
  • Computer Score:  429.3/6.5 = 66.05 (was 73.55)
  • What’s Coming Up: at Michigan State (3/25), Michigan (3/27), Iowa (4/1), Nebraska (4/3), at Kentucky 4/6)
  • Comments: The Buckeyes won’t have any issues in East Lansing on Friday but they’ll need to be ready for Michigan on Sunday because the Wolverines have probably had this match circled for a while.

Oklahoma State moves up one spot to No. 5 after picking up a road win at Pepperdine on Saturday. The Cowboys were just .03 behind UCLA last week but they moved ahead of the Bruins this week by over five points. The jump was mainly due to Arkansas coming up 19 spots in the rankings plus some of UCLA’s best wins fell.
  • 6 Best Wins (400.7): at #13 Arkansas, #10 Wake Forest, #14 California, #16 South Florida, at #26 Memphis, #33 NC State
  • Other Quality Wins: #43 Alabama, #49 Harvard, #52 Iowa, at #71 Pepperdine
  • Losses (6.1): #3 TCU
  • Computer Score:  400.7/6.1 = 65.69 (was 64.39)
  • What’s Coming Up: SMU/Oral Roberts (3/26), at Tulsa (4/1), at Texas (4/8), at TCU (4/10)
  • Comments: The Cowboys keep plugging away and they should be 18-1 when they head to Austin on April 8 to kick off their Big 12 campaign.

UCLA drops one spot to No. 6 after not playing last week. The drop was due to Oklahoma State getting a boost from Arkansas rising plus UCLA lost some points when Texas A&M, Georgia, and San Diego dropped a few spots.
  • 6 Best Wins (376): #9 Texas A&M, #12 USC, #19 Georgia (2X), #32 Georgia Tech, #34 San Diego
  • Other Quality Wins: at #42 Stanford, #44 SMU, #59 BYU
  • Losses (6.2): #1 Virginia, #2 North Carolina
  • Computer Score:  376/6.2 = 60.65 (was 64.42)
  • What’s Coming Up: at UNLV (3/22), at Oregon (3/25), at Washington (3/27), Stanford (4/1), Cal (4/2)
  • Comments: UCLA took care of business today, as expected, against UNLV and shouldn’t have too much trouble this weekend when it goes to Oregon and Washington. The following weekend will be a test when both Stanford and Cal come to town.
