Virginia stays at the top spot for the second week in a row while there was some shuffling at the two through five spots. UCLA moved up two spots to No. 2, North Carolina moved up two spots to No. 3, TCU fell two spots to No. 4, and Ohio State fell two spots to No. 5.

Georgia and Wake Forest remain at No. 6 and No. 7 though the gap between the two has widened considerably. USC moved up one spot to No. 8, Texas Tech moved up one spot to No. 9, and Oklahoma dropped two spots to No. 10. For further details on why the teams moved check out my profiles on each team further down below.

This set of rankings used each team’s nine best wins and all losses as will each subsequent set of rankings until the selection of the NCAA field on May 3rd.

Vanderbilt
was the big mover after picking up a pair of road wins over Mississippi State and Alabama.

The following teams moved up at least 5 spots versus the last rankings – movement in ( ):
#34 Vanderbilt (+11) – won on the road at Mississippi State and Alabama
#35 Oregon (+6) – won on the road at Washington
#50 South Carolina (+8) – won at Arkansas
#60 Boise State (+8) – beat San Diego State and UNLV
#64 Indiana (+6) – won at Iowa and Nebraska
#67 UNC Wilmington (+5) – won at Georgia State

The following teams dropped down at least 5 spots versus the last rankings (still ranked):
#18 Arkansas (-6) – lost to South Carolina
#40 Alabama (-6) – lost to Vanderbilt
#43 Baylor (-6) – lost to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma
#53 Wisconsin (-6) – lost to Penn State and Ohio State
#58 Georgia State (-5) – lost to UNC Wilmington
#61 Pepperdine (-5) – lost to San Diego and BYU
#72 Iowa (-5) – lost to Purdue and Indiana
#74 UC Davis (-5) – lost to Cal, UCSB, and Cal Poly

These 2 teams entered the rankings after being unranked and here is why they are now ranked
#73 Clemson – picked up a nice road win at Duke
#75 North Florida – loss to Florida Gulf Coast didn’t hurt as much when FGCU entered the rankings last week and Columbia loss hurt less when CU rose into another tier.

These 2 teams dropped out of the rankings with last week’s rankings in ( ):
UC Irvine (75) – previous win over Loyola Marymount lost value when LMU dropped 8 spots
Florida Gulf Coast (74) – previous win over North Florida lost value when UNF dropped out of the rankings last week

Here is the ITA’s release which breaks down the rankings by conference affiliation.

Below I’ll breakdown the team Top 10 looking at the 9 best wins that were used in the rankings this week along with other quality ranked wins. I also listed the point totals gained from the best wins and losses to come up with the computer score.

Virginia (22-3) stays at No. 1 after sweeping both Wake Forest and Miami to win its 13th straight ACC regular season championship. The only thing standing between the Hoos and the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament are a few teams in the ACC Tournament.

  • 9 Best Wins (711.9): #2 TCU, #4 UCLA, #7 Wake Forest (2X), #8 Oklahoma, #13 Florida, #20 Kentucky, #22 Florida State, #24 Tulsa
  • Other Quality Wins:  at #30 Georgia Tech, #31 San Diego, #40 Virginia Tech, #42 NC State, #43 Notre Dame, #64 Duke
  • Losses (9.6): #5 North Carolina (2X), #17 Illinois
  • Computer Score:  711.9/9.6 = 74.16 (was 72.25)
  • What’s Coming Up: ACC Tournament (4/22-24) – NC State/Clemson winner, North Carolina/Georgia Tech winner, Wake Forest/Notre Dame winner
  • Comments: It looks like Virginia may see North Carolina for a third time this year in the semifinals – assuming UNC doesn’t stumble against Georgia Tech. A win over UNC/GT would likely pit Virginia against Wake for a third time – will be interesting to see if they can finally master UNC and if so can they beat Wake for a third time?

UCLA (20-2) moves up two spots to No. 2 after a big win road win at USC.
  • 9 Best Wins (649.2): #6 Georgia (2X), #9 USC (2X), #11 Texas A&M, #16 Cal, #27 SMU, #29 Stanford (2X + 1 on road)
  • Other Quality Wins: #30 Georgia Tech, #31 San Diego, at #35 Washington, #41 Oregon, #61 BYU, at #73 Utah
  • Losses (9.2): #1 Virginia, #5 North Carolina
  • Computer Score:  649.2/9.2 = 70.57 (was 66.33)
  • What’s Coming Up: Pac 12 Tournament (4/22-23) – Stanford/Oregon winner, USC/Cal/Wash/Utah winner
  • Comments: UCLA beat USC for a second time to win the Pac-12 regular season title and it may have to beat them again to win the Pac-12 Tournament. The only way UCLA could move up to No. 1 would be if they won the Pac-12 and someone other than Virginia or North Carolina won the ACC, and someone other than TCU won the Big 12.

North Carolina (24-3) moves up two spots to No. 3 after beating both Georgia Tech and Duke. The reason for the boost is because Virginia moved up to No. 1 which meant those two wins over them became worth that many more points.

  • 9 Best Wins (734.6): #1 Virginia (2X + 1 on road), #3 Ohio State, #4 UCLA, #8 Oklahoma, #10 Texas Tech, #17 Illinois, #30 Georgia Tech, at #42 NC State
  • Other Quality Wins: #40 Virginia Tech, #42 NC State (2nd of 2 wins), #45 Vanderbilt, at #64 Duke
  • Losses (10.5): #7 Wake Forest, at #22 Florida State, at #43 Notre Dame
  • Computer Score:  734.6/10.5 = 69.96 (was 65.93)
  • What’s Coming Up: ACC Tournament (4/22-24) – Georgia Tech, Virginia, Wake Forest
  • Comments: North Carolina will have a tough path to an ACC Championship with the Tar Heels likely looking at Georgia Tech, Virginia, and Wake Forest in the quarters, semis, and finals. UNC just beat Georgia Tech last weekend but it was a very close 4-3 match that came down to a few third sets.

TCU (21-2) drops two spots to No. 4 despite picking up a top 20 road win over Texas. TCU’s drop was due to several of its wins dropping (aTm, OkSt, NW, ILL) while both UNC’s and UCLA’s best wins came up.

  • 9 Best Wins (659.7): #8 Oklahoma, #9 USC, #11 Texas A&M, #14 Oklahoma State (2X), #15 Northwestern, #17 Illinois (2X +1 on road), at #18 Texas
  • Other Quality Wins: at #19 South Florida, #24 Tulsa, #25 Columbia, #26 Rice, #27 SMU, #29 Stanford, #36 Dartmouth, at #47 Wisconsin,
  • Losses (9.5): #1 Virginia, #16 California
  • Computer Score:  659.7/9.5 = 69.44 (was 70.46)
  • What’s Coming Up: Baylor (4/20), at Texas Tech (4/24), Big 12 Tournament (4/30-5/1)
  • Comments: TCU has Baylor coming to Fort Worth tomorrow and then it welcomes in a Texas Tech team that just took it to Oklahoma in Norman this past weekend. TCU will blank Baylor but Tech will put up more resistance. The Big 12 Tournament will be the following weekend in Stillwater.

Ohio State (25-2) drops two spots to No. 5 despite beating Minnesota and Wisconsin on the road. Ohio State’s point total stayed virtually the same while UCLA’s and UNC’s point total came up due to their best wins increasing in the rankings.

  • 9 Best Wins (618.7): at #8 Oklahoma, #11 Texas A&M (2X), #13 Florida, #18 Texas,  at #19 South Florida, at #20 Kentucky, #21 Michigan, #37 Baylor
  • Other Quality Wins:  #39 Penn State, #40 Virginia Tech,at #43 Notre Dame, at #47 Wisconsin, #51 Denver, #67 Iowa
  • Losses (9.3): #1 North Carolina, at #7 Georgia
  • Computer Score:  618.7/9.3 = 66.53 (was 66.57)
  • What’s Coming Up: Northwestern (4/22), Illinois (4/24), Big Ten Tournament (4/29-5/1)
  • Comments: The Big Ten title will be decided this weekend when Northwestern and Illinois come to Columbus – with both being top 20 teams Ohio State may be able to move up if they win both but it won’t be a given because everyone ahead of them also plays top 20 teams.

Georgia (18-3) stays at No. 6 after picking up road wins over Arkansas and Ole Miss which capped off an undefeated regular season in SEC play. Georgia was almost 6 points behind No. 5 last week but this week the Bulldogs are only .71 behind.
  • 9 Best Wins (618.7): #3 Ohio State, at #11 Texas A&M, at #12 Arkansas #13 Florida, #20 Kentucky, #23 Mississippi State, #25 Columbia, #30 Georgia Tech, at #32 Ole Miss
  • Other Quality Wins: at #33 LSU, #34 Alabama#38 Memphis, at #45 Vanderbilt#50 UC Santa Barbara, #52 East Tennessee State, at #58 South Carolina  #63 Auburn
  • Losses (9.4): #4 UCLA (2X), #10 Texas Tech
  • Computer Score: 618.7/9.4 = 65.82 (was 59.97)
  • What’s Coming Up:  SEC Tournament (4/22-24) – Alabama/Ole Miss winner, Miss St/Kentucky winner, Florida/Texas A&M/Arkansas winner
  • Comments: Georgia won’t have any problem in the SEC quarters but the Mississippi State/Kentucky winner will give them a good match in the semis but the Dawgs should still pull through. There are three good teams that could face Georgia in the finals with my money on Florida coming through. Florida had Georgia on the ropes in Athens so you can bet they’ll be ready if they make it to the finals.

Wake Forest (26-5) stays at No. 7 after losing at Virginia last Friday.

  • 9 Best Wins (631.5): at #5 North Carolina, #8 Oklahoma (2X + 1 on road), #9 USC, #10 Texas Tech,  at #22 Florida State, #30 Georgia Tech, at #40 Virginia Tech, #43 Notre Dame
  • Other Quality Wins: #52 East Tennessee State#58 South Carolina, #63 Auburn, #64 Duke,
  • Losses (10.7): #1 Virginia (2X), #14 Oklahoma State, #18 Texas, #42 NC State
  • Computer Score: 631.5/10.7 = 59.02 (was 59.68)
  • What’s Coming Up: ACC Tournament (4/22-24) – Notre Dame, Florida State/Virginia Tech winner, Virginia/North Carolina winner
  • Comments: Wake better be ready to go because they’ll most likely face a red-shot Notre Dame in the ACC quarterfinals. If they get past ND they’d be looking at the winner of the Florida State/Va Tech match and if they won that won they’d probably see either Virginia or North Carolina in the finals.

USC (15-5) rises one spot to No. 8 despite the weekend loss to UCLA. The reason they came up was because several of its best wins rose with Stanford being the big one.
  • 9 Best Wins (556.2): #8 Oklahoma, #13 Florida, #16 California, #19 South Florida, at #24 Tulsa, #28 Tulane, #29 Stanford (2X + 1 on road), #37 Baylor
  • Other Quality Wins: at #41 Oregon, #69 UC Davis, at #73 Utah
  • Losses (10.2): #2 TCU, #4 UCLA (2X), #7 Wake Forest, #35 Washington
  • Computer Score: 556.2/10.2 = 54.53 (was 53.10)
  • What’s Coming Up: Pac 12 Tournament (4/22-23) – Cal/Washington/Utah winner, UCLA/Stanford winner
  • Comments: USC should get past Cal in the Pac-12 semis but I don’t see how they’ll be able to solve the riddle that is UCLA.

Texas Tech (24-4) rises one spot to No. 9 after splitting matches with Oklahoma (win) and Oklahoma State (loss).

  • 9 Best Wins (549.7): #6 Georgia, at #8 Oklahoma, #13 Florida, #24 Tulsa, #28 Tulane, #32 Ole Miss, at #37 Baylor (2X + 1 on road), at #42 NC State
  • Other Quality Wins: #46 Princeton, #49 Drake, #57 Utah State, #71 Pacific (2X)
  • Losses (10.2): #5 North Carolina, #6 Wake Forest, #14 Oklahoma State, #26 Rice
  • Computer Score: 549.7/10.2 = 53.89 (was 49.27)
  • What’s Coming Up: Texas (4/22), TCU (4/24), Big 12 Tournament (4/29-5/1)
  • Comments: The Red Raiders picked up a nice rebound win at Oklahoma after losing to Oklahoma State but it won’t get any easier this weekend when they welcome in Texas and TCU. Tech should get past Texas but TCU will be a really tall order.

Oklahoma (13-9) falls two spot to No. 10 after a loss at home to Texas Tech.

  • 9 Best Wins (549.3): #16 Cal, #17 Illinois, at #18 Texas,  at #19 South Florida, at #24 Tulsa, at #22 Florida State, #31 San Diego, at #34 Alabama, #37 Baylor
  • Other Quality Wins: #38 Memphis, #57 Utah State
  • Losses (10.5): #1 Virginia, #2 TCU, #3 Ohio State, #5 North Carolina, #6 Wake Forest (2X), #9 USC,  #10 Texas Tech, #12 Arkansas
  • Computer Score: 549.3/10.5 = 52.31 (was 53.73)
  • What’s Coming Up: at Oklahoma State (4/23), Big 12 Tournament (4/29-5/1)
  • Comments: Oklahoma seemed to be back on track until Texas Tech took it to them last Sunday. The Sooners don’t have any time to be down on themselves because they have to go to Oklahoma State this weekend for Bedlam. The following weekend they’ll be back in Stillwater for the Big 12 Tournament.
