While the men’s top seed Mikael Torpegaard cruised into the Round of 16 the second seed and defending champion Thai-Son Kwiatkowski got all he wanted and more from UCLA junior Martin Redlicki. The Bruin lefty used his big serve and forehand to keep Kwiatkowski at arms length but the Cavalier senior hung around long enough to turn it around.

Redlicki took the opening set 6-3 after picking up the lone break to go up 4-2. Kwiatkowski broke Redlicki to go up 3-1 in the second but Redlicki broke back and held to even it at 3-3. Redlicki came back from 15/40 down to send the set to a tiebreak but Kwiatkowski rolled 7-3 to force a deciding third set. Redlicki held to start the third set and kept the pressure on but Kwiatkowski was awfully tough on his own serve. Kwiatkowski held from 40/30 to even it at 5-5 and then he got the pivotal break to go up 6-5. Redlicki was up 40/30 in his 5-5 service game but a Kwiatkowski forehand winner brought up the no-ad point and when Redlicki netted a forehand Kwiatkowski had the break. Kwiatkowski hit back-to-back service winners from 30-all to close out the 3-6, 7-6(3), 7-5 win.

What a day for the Wake Forest trio of Skander Mansouri, Petros Chrysochos, and Christian Seraphim. Each won their singles matches in straight sets and Mansouri and Seraphim were victorious in doubles as well. Wake Forest is the only school with more than two participants left in the singles draw and both Mansouri and Chrysochos will be favored on Saturday.

Schools with Multiple Players Remaining
3- Wake Forest (Chrysochos, Mansouri, Seraphim)
2- Ohio State (Di Feo, Torpegaard)
2- Arkansas (Redlicki, Salazar)
2- Texas (Ito, Sigsgaard)

The Texas freshmen duo of Yuya Ito and Christian Sigsgaard were two of the three qualifiers to stay alive with Wake’s Christian Seraphim the other. Sigsgaard, who is the lone pre-qualifier remaining, had to come back from a set down against Ohio State senior Herkko Pollanen and he’ll now face Baylor senior Max Tchoutakian who made a big comeback of his own. Tchoutakian trailed Florida senior Elliott Orkin 6-4, 5-3 but Tchoutakian got it back on serve and won the second set tiebreak 7-3. Tchoutakian broke Orkin to go ahead 2-1 in the third but Orkin broke back on the no-ad point and held for 3-2. Tchoutakian broke to go ahead 5-4 and then he served it out from 40/15 to get the 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-4 win.

Other Tidbits:

  • Ohio State sophomore Hugo Di Feo defeated Tulsa senior Or Ram-Harel 6-4 in the third but he had to fight off three break points after falling behind 15-40 on his 5-4 service game.
  • The first set of the Gustav Hansson/Lukas Finzelberg match lasted longer than five of the other 9 a.m matches in their entirety.
  • No Arkansas player had won a match at an ITA Tournament since 2008 and now the Razorbacks have a pair in the Round of 16
  • Six of the top eight seeds are into the Round of 16 which is more than the last two years combined (5).

The women played two rounds on Friday in the Pacific Palisades with North Carolina senior Hayley Carter, Ohio State sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo, Vanderbilt junior Astra Sharma, and UCLA freshman pre-qualifier Ena Shibahara moving on to the semifinals.

Di Lorenzo trailed Florida’s Belinda Woolcock 5-0 in the first set before winning 13 of the next 15 games to close it out 7-5, 6-2. Di Lorenzo will meet Carter who broke Viktoriya Lushkova’s 4-5 service game to win 7-5, 6-4. Carter actually had a 7-5, 5-0 lead but Lushkova took four straight games to put it back on serve.

Ena Shibahara won her eighth and ninth matches this week but after seven straight set wins she needed three-sets in each of her Friday matches. Shibahara will meet Astra Sharma who came back from a set down to beat North Carolina freshman Sara Daavettila and then got a straight set win over Pepperdine’s Mayar Sherif Ahmed.
