It looks like the 13-time NCAA Division II Championship tennis teams at Armstrong State University in Savannah, Georgia, are on borrowed time after news of yesterday’s merger with nearby Georgia Southern University.  The merger, which is expected to take 18 months to complete, will combined the two schools with the Georgia Southern name being retained while the Armstrong State name and history will most likely fall by the wayside. This article from WTOC.com in Savannah says current athletic scholarships will be honored however the ability for many of those student-athletes to compete will probably have to come somewhere else. This current season won’t be effected by the merger but only time will tell if there will be a next season for Armstrong State tennis. The ASU women’s program won the NCAA Championship last year and has won the national title seven times in the last nine years while the men’s program made the NCAA semifinals last year with its most recent NCAA Championship coming in 2012. Updates on the merger can be found at this link.

Several conferences released their preseason coaches polls on Wednesday with most going as expected. Georgia is the men’s coaches pick with last year’s regular season champs getting 168 points while Florida, last year’s conference tournament champs, received 151 points.  The women’s poll was reversed with Florida the unanimous No. 1 while Georgia was No. 2.

There are several tournaments taking place this weekend with many of the draws pretty loaded. On the men’s side USC, UCLA, Stanford, and Baylor will be playing in the Sherwood Cup (draws in link) in Thousand Oaks while UCLA, San Francisco, USC, Pepperdine, Utah, and Boise State will be sending players to Rancho Mirage (CA) for the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. The NCTC also has a women’s draw as well with participants from Texas, Baylor, Stanford, UCLA, Wichita State, USC, San Diego, Oklahoma State, and Arizona. I have not seen draws yet for this event but I will post them when I do – FloTennis is providing streaming coverage for this event for its subscribers.

The big event on the women’s side is the Freeman Memorial in Las Vegas with UNLV hosting players from No. 1 Florida, No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Pepperdine, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Duke and No. 25 UCLA. There will be two flights of singles and doubles and let me tell you the Flight 1 singles and Flight 1 doubles draws are absolutely loaded with talent. Here is the Flight 2 singles/doubles draws. Florida’s Ingrid Need, who was a TRN #1 Blue Chip with an 11.87 UTR, makes her collegiate debut.

There were also be a few events that utilize a hidden-dual format which are not counted as actual dual-matches but each team is supposed to match up similar level players – i.e #1 singles vs. #1 singles. Georgia Tech is hosting the MLK Invitational with Georgia, Illinois, and Columbia joining the Jackets for a weekend of good tennis that will run through Monday. Florida Gulf Coast is hosting the FGCU Invitational in Ft. Myers with South Florida, Louisville, and Wisconsin coming south.

The dual-match season got fired up yesterday with the Ole Miss men’s team defeating Hawaii 7-0 and the Central Florida women’s team defeating Flagler 5-2. There are several dual-matches on tap for this upcoming 4-day weekend (MLK on Monday). I have loaded a slew of live scoring links in my live scoring tab though you’ll need to have a paid subscription to view those. For the first few days I’ll list them here for free but by next weekend you’ll have to have subscribe to continue viewing them.
