Hayley Carter New Assistant Coach at Oklahoma State, Other Coaching News, Newport Wildcards Named, USTA National Clay Court Championship Info

Hayley Carter accomplished just about everything there was to accomplish in her four years at North Carolina but instead of continuing her playing career on the pro tour she has decided to start her coaching career. Oklahoma State women’s head coach Chris Young announced on Thursday that Carter will become the Cowgirls new women’s assistant coach replacing Matt Manasse who left to take the same position at Duke. Below are some quotes from OSU’s release:

“I am excited to welcome Hayley to the Cowgirl tennis family,” Young said. “I have known Hayley for a while and I value the characteristics she will bring to our program which include her worth ethic, energy, and overall competitive spirit. Hayley will be a great mentor to our current players as well as future recruits. What she has accomplished as a player is remarkable, and she will be a valuable asset for any player who has the opportunity to work with her.”

“I have known Chris for six years now and am so thankful to him for the amazing opportunity he has given me to begin my college coaching career here at Oklahoma State,” Carter said. “The program has proven to be one of the best in college tennis, and I am looking forward to working alongside Chris to help the girls continue to reach all of their goals. What stood out to me was not just the campus and overall academic and athletic support, but all of the people that immediately welcomed me like family. Stillwater already feels like home and I cannot wait to get started.”

 

 

The announcement was made while Carter was playing in the $30K Mid-Atlantic Clay Court Championships in Midlothian, Virginia, and in fact Carter ended up winning both the singles and doubles titles and $8000 payday that went with it. You can view full results from that event at this link.

Liz Ferris is now officially the women’s head coach at UC Irvine after serving as UC Irvine’s interim women’s head coach last year. Ferris went 6-18 last year after replacing Mike Edles who retired in September.  

Taylor Fogleman was named as the women’s assistant at Texas. Fogleman, who was the women’s assistant at Rice for the last three season, replaces Courtney Dolehide who left in June after being accepted into Georgetown’s MBA program.

Cris James is the new men’s assistant under at NC State. James was previously a head coach at Illinois State and an assistant at Notre Dame.

Quetzali Vazquez is the new women’s assistant at North Florida. Vazquez graduated from UNF in May and will replace Fernando Guillen. 

 

 

2017 NCAA Singles Champion Thai-Son Kwiatkowski will make his main draw ATP debut next week after being awarded a wild card into the Dell Technologies Hall of Fame Open which is an ATP 250 grass-court event that takes place in Newport, Rhode Island. Georgia Tech rising senior Chris Eubanks and North Carolina rising sophomore Will Blumberg were awarded wild cards into the qualifying draw. The actual draws should be out sometime on Saturday. 

 

 

A slew of future college players (62 according to TRN’s google spreadsheet) will be playing at the USTA Boys’ 18 & 16 National Clay Court Championships in Delray Beach, Florida with play set to begin on Sunday. Princeton commit Bill Duo and Harvard commit Harris Walker, both 2018 commits, are the top two seeds in the Boys 18 draw. All the draws including doubles are available at this link.
