Brady, Isner, & Anderson Into US Open Third Round

Three former college tennis players moved into the third round at the 2017 US Open with none more impressive than Jennifer Brady. The former UCLA Bruin hammered the No. 23 seed Barbora Strycova 6-1, 6-1 in just 56 minutes. Brady won 56 of 82 points (.683) and won 70% of the points on Strycova’s second serve. Brady has played in all four majors this year with her best performance thus far coming in Australia when she made the round of 16. Brady’s third round opponent will be WTA #57 Monica Niculescu with the match scheduled for Saturday. 

 

Two-time NCAA singles champion Nicole Gibbs gave the No. 1 seed Karolina Pliskova all she wanted in the early match on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Gibbs won the opening set 6-2 but was broken late in both the second and third sets and fell 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.  

John Isner and Kevin Anderson each rolled into the third round after straight set wins over Hyeon Chung and Ernests Gulbis. Isner only need 1 hour and 45 minutes to defeat Chung 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Isner hammered 30 aces and never faced a break point while he broke Chung three times. Anderson ousted Gulbis 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in 2 hours and 17 minutes with the South African hitting 18 aces and fighting off all seven break points. Next up for Isner is the No. 23 seed Mischa Zverev with the match scheduled for 7 p.m. eastern on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Anderson will meet Borna Coric at roughly 1:30 p.m. eastern in the second match on the Grandstand.
