Kevin Anderson, who spent three years at Illinois from 2005 to 2007, equaled his career-best result at a grand slam and moved into the quarterfinals at the 2017 US Open with a four-set win over Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi. Anderson broke Lorenzi once in each of the first two sets and after 1 hour and 14 minutes of play he led 6-4, 6-3. Lorenzi earned his first break of the match in the third set and despite Anderson breaking back Lorenzi would take the set in a tiebreak 7-4. In the fourth set, Lorenzi broke Anderson to go up 3-2 but Anderson broke back and held for 4-3. After a Lorenzi hold, Anderson would hold and then break to close it out 6-4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. 

Anderson hit 18 aces and had 54 total winners versus 48 unforced errors while Lorenzi had 9 double faults and hit 21 winners versus 30 unforced errors. Next up for Anderson will be American Sam Querrey after Querrey crushed Mischa Zverev in just 1 hour and 16 minutes. Querrey leads the H2H 9-6 but Anderson won the most recent meeting last month in Montreal in straight sets. This will be the second meeting between the two at a grand slam with Querrey defeating Anderson in five sets in the round of 16 at Wimbledon just two months ago.  

 

Jennifer Brady booked her spot in the US Open fourth round after a close three-set win over Monica Niculescu (WTA #57). Brady needed just 27 minutes to take the opening set 6-3 and then in the second set she broke to go up 3-1. Niculescu immediately erased the break and then added another to go up 5-3. Brady managed to break back for 5-4 and then she had four game points to even it at 5-5 but Niculescu broke in a six-deuce game to take the set 6-4.

In the third set, Brady broke Niculescu and then held for 2-0 but Niculescu would get it back on serve with a break for 3-3. Brady broke for 4-3 but Niculescu broke back and held for 5-4. Brady held and then broke for 6-5 but Niculescu broke back from 30/40 to send it to a tiebreak. Brady sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak and would close it out 7-3.

Next up for the former UCLA Bruin is a showdown with world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova – first serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. ET on Monday with the match being played at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
