While the Mountain Regional finished up its second day of main draw play several other regionals just got started on Thursday with a few more not firing up until Friday or Saturday. Below is a brief recap from five of the men’s regionals with more updates to come throughout the weekend. 

Men: 

Mountain (BYU) – 128 singles

Seeds
1. Dan Little (Utah)
2. David Micevski (Utah)
3. Ricky Hernandez Tong (New Mexico)
4. Christofer Goncalves (New Mexico State)
5. Tim Handel (Northern Arizona)
6. Dominic West (New Mexico)
7. Svyatoslav Shainyan (Utah)
8. Jaime Barajas (Utah State)

Notes: BYU sophomore Sean Hill (12.80), who played at Wake Forest last fall, advanced to the fourth round with a three-set win over the No. 15 seed Boise State’s Jack Heslin (13.00) and a pair of straight set wins over players from Northern Colorado and Montana. Next up for Hill is the top seed Utah’s Dan Little who only dropped seven games in his first three matches. Other unseeded players to reach the fourth round are Denver sophomore Sean Huynh and BYU junior Jeffrey Hsu. Utah State’s Sergiu Becur is the highest seeded player to lose so far with the No. 13 seed falling in the first round in three sets to Weber State’s Kris Van Wyk. 

 

Southwest (Pepperdine) – 128 singles

Seeds

5. Sebastian Heim (UC Irvine)
6. Anders Holm (UCSB)

Notes: 11 of the top 12 seeds advanced to the round of 32 with the lone upset occurring when USC redshirt sophomore Jake DeVine (13.17) ousted the No. 5 seed UC Irvine’s Sebastian Heim (13.78) 7-6, 7-6. There will be several good matches on Friday including the No. 9 seed UCLA’s Max Cressy taking on Arizona State’s Benjamin Hannestad and USC’s Tanner Smith playing Pepperdine’s Dennis Uspensky. 

 

Northwest (Pacific) – 128 singles/64 doubles

5. Jack Molloy (Cal)

Notes: 5 seeds players fell in the round of 128 and another 5 went down in the round of 64 with the biggest upset by seed occurring when Cal’s Dominic Barretto (12.89) knocked off the No. 3 seed Stanford’s David Wilczynski (13.94) 7-5, 6-2. Other top 16 seeds to lose – Washington’s Enzo Sommer (No. 9) retired down 5-2 in the first set against Santa Clara’s Jesus Barajas, Fresno State’s Zdenek Derkas (No. 10) lost 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 to UC Davis’s David Goulak, Oregon’s Cormac Clissold (No. 15) lost 7-5, 6-4 to Santa Clara’s Kamran Khan, & Stanford’s William Genesen (No. 16) fell 6-3, 6-3 to Gonzaga’s Sam Felt. 

 

Ohio Valley (Tennessee)

Notes: The only top 32 seed to lose on the opening day was Vanderbilt’s Lachlan McPhee (No. 29) who lost 7-6, 6-3 to Kentucky’s Gus Benson. 

 

Central (Minnesota) – 128 singles/64 doubles

Notes: The only top 32 seeds to lose on day 1 were Iowa’s Joe Tyler (No. 17-24) who lost 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 to Oklahoma State’s Luke Hammond, Oklahoma’s Jake Van Emburgh (No. 17-24) who lost 7-6, 7-6 to Drake’s Barny Thorold, and Oklahoma State’s Jurence Mendoza (No. 25-32) who lost 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to Nebraska’s Micah Klousia,
