Men’s Winners & Losers – Week of April 16-22

Ten automatic bids went out last week on the men’s side, nine conference tournaments and the Ivy League, with the top seed winning just four conference tournaments, the two seed winning three, and the three seed winning two. Below are last week’s big winners and further below are the teams that were last week’s biggest losers. 

Tulane – the Green Wave captured its first American Athletic Conference Championship, and first conference championship since 2005, with a 4-3 win over four-time defending champion South Florida. Tulane sophomore Tim Ruetzel clinched the title with a 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 win at No. 6.  

 

North Florida – the Ospreys won their second Atlantic Sun Championship in the last three years with a 4-1 win over the No. 2 seed Stetson. UNF senior and ASUN Tournament MVP Lasse Muscheites provided the clincher with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 2. 
 

 
Campbell – the Camels won their first Big South Conference Championship since 1992 and earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth with a thrilling 4-3 win over the top seed Winthrop. CU freshman Ted Williams won the deciding match at No. 6 singles 7-5, 0-6, 7-6(5).
 

 
UNC Wilmington – the Seahawks won the Colonial Athletic Association Championship for the second year in a row, sixth time overall, with a 4-2 win over the top seed William & Mary. UNCW sophomore Ignasi de Reuda clinched with a 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 3.
 

 
 
Old Dominion – the Monarchs won their first Conference USA Championship with a dominating 4-0 win over the No. 3 seed Florida Atlantic. ODU senior, and former Baylor Bear, Vincent Schneider clinched the title with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3. 
 

 
Bryant – the Bulldogs won their fifth consecutive Northeast Conference Championship with a 4-0 win over the No. 2 seed Wagner. BU freshman Wilson Dong clinched the title with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6.
 

 
Tennessee Tech – the Golden Eagles won the Ohio Valley Conference Championship for the third year in a row, ninth overall, with a 4-3 win over the top seed and host Belmont. TTU freshman Riku Kubota won the deciding match at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-7, 6-3. 
 

 
East Tennessee State – the Buccaneers won their 12th straight conference championship, fourth straight in the Southern Conference, with a 4-2 win over the No. 3 seed Furman. ETSU sophomore Miguel Este provided the clincher with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win at No. 6. 
 

 
South Alabama– the Jaguars won their first Sun Belt Conference Championship since 2008 with a 4-1 win over the top seed and defending champion Georgia State. USA sophomore Loic Cloes clinched the title with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2.

Dartmouth – the Big Green won its first Ivy League Championship since 1997, and the Ivy League’s automatic bid, after defeating Penn and Princeton over the weekend. 
 
Virginia Tech – the Hokies won their seventh match in a row and snapped a 14-match losing streak to state rival Virginia with a 4-3 win. VT sophomore Alexandre Ribeiro won the deciding match at No. 2 with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(4) win. The Hokies are now a lock to make the NCAAs after sitting well off the pace just a few weeks ago.
 
TCU – the Horned Frogs went undefeated in their Big XII regular season schedule for a second year in a row after beating Baylor at home and Texas Tech on the road. 
 
Oklahoma – the Sooners appear to have locked up a spot as a NCAA regional host after coming back from 0-3 down to beat Oklahoma State 4-3. 
 
Oregon – the Ducks locked up their NCAA at-large bid after defeating Cal for the first time in school history plus they did it in Berkeley to boot. 
 
Indiana – the Hoosiers closed out the regular season by winning five of their final six which included a 4-0 win over Penn State on Sunday. 
 
Miami FL – the Canes vastly improved their stock after upsetting Duke 4-3 on Friday. Miami will be the No. 10 seed in the ACC Tournament and will play NC State on Thursday.  

  

Men’s Losers

Louisville lost its regular season finale at Virginai Tech and will now play Virginia in the ACC Tournament in a virtual elimination for the loser. The winner will be a large underdog against No. 1 Wake Forest in the quarterfinals.

Virginia had a chance to lock up its bid against Virginia Tech but the loss has pushed them below the cut and they’ll need to beat Louisville in the 8 vs. 9 match on Thursday to have any chance of making the tournament. 

Middle Tennessee State had its 10-match winning streak get snapped in the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament to Florida Atlantic. If the Blue Raiders had made it to the CUSA final against ODU they probably would have been in regardless of the outcome but the loss to FAU is going to put them right on top of the bubble and they’ll probably be either the last team in or the first team out.
