UNC Women Win Top 3 Showdown At Vandy; Ohio State Crushes Stanford; Texas Outlasts UNC; Florida Chomps Past FSU, UCLA Women Over Oklahoma State

The big match of the day on Saturday came on the women’s side with No. 3 North Carolina picking up a 5-2 road win over No. 2 Vanderbilt. The Heels came out strong in doubles and took the point with a pair of 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 and in singles Alexa Graham quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. Fernanda Contreras, ITA No. 6, put Vandy on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 2 ranked Makenna Jones but that’d be just about all Vandy could muster. UNC freshman Cameron Morra made it 3-1 with a 7-5, 7-5 win over fellow freshman Carolyn Campana at No. 4 and UNC sophomore Alle Sanford would provide the clincher at No. 5 with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 win over Emily Smith. The final two matches were played out with Vandy getting its second point with a win from Georgia Drummy at No. 3 while UNC’s Jessie Aney rolled at No. 6 in a match that didn’t start until after the first singles match was completed since Vandy’s indoor facility has only five courts. 

If you tried to follow this top 3 showdown at home the only way you could see the scores was if you clicked on the video link for each court because for some reason Vandy has stopped providing live scoring. While streaming video is great not having a live scoring page to summarize everything is extremely poor. The summarized scoring updates on twitter were bad at best with neither team putting forth much effort. If you’re looking to grow the sport making it extremely difficult to get basic scoring updates is not the way to go.

There were two top 10 tilts on the men’s side with the home team coming out on top in both of them.

In Columbus, No. 2 Ohio State made it 67 in a row at home, and 267 of its last 268 (thanks Gary), after an authoritative 6-1 win over No. 9 Stanford in a match that was clinched in just 1 hour and 39 minutes. The Buckeyes took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then added five opening sets in singles which included JJ Wolf coming back from 0-3 down to take the set over Axel Geller 7-5. Ohio State picked up three quick wins in singles with Hunter Tubert, Alex Kobelt, and Martin Joyce winning at No. 6, No. 5, and No. 4 with none of the three yielding more than five games. They played the rest of the matches out with JJ Wolf and John McNally winning at No. 1 and No. 2 while Stanford picked up its lone point from William Genesen at No. 3.

In Austin, No. 8 Texas made it three in a row over No. 6 North Carolina with a tight 5-2 win. The Horns had no problem in doubles collecting 6-2 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 but singles would be a grind. UNC’s Simon Soendergaard, who spent most of last year at No. 3, tied the match at 1-1 after rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 in the lone match of the day that didn’t go the distance. 

Harrison Scott put Texas back in front with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 4 and Leo Telles overcame a slow start to make it 3-1 with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3. Telles served for the match at 5-3 and was broken on a 40/40 point but broke back to close it out. With all three remaining matches getting late in the third set it’d be Texas freshman Chih Chi Huang that would put the Horns over the top with a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5) win at No. 5. At the time of the clinch, UNC’s Ben Sigouin had match points in the tiebreak at No. 2 and William Blumberg led 5-3 at No. 1. Both matches were played out with UT’s Yuya Ito erasing the match points to win the tiebreak 10-8 while Blumberg held on to win 6-3.

Michigan made it two wins in two nights after they followed up a 4-1 win over Cornell with a 4-2 win over No. 18 Oklahoma. The Sooners grabbed the early lead after taking the doubles point with a 7-6(1) win at No. 1 and 7-5 win at No. 2. OU’s No. 2 team of Aleksandre Bakshi and Stefano Tsorotiotis came back from a 3-5 deficit to get the win.

OU added four opening sets in singles but while Michigan only claimed two they finished both off in straight sets with Myles Schalet and Andrew Fenty winning at No. 2 and No. 3. OU’s Stefano Tsorotiotis evened the match at 2-2 with a straight set win at No. 5 but Michigan retook the lead after Mattias Siimar won 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1. Michigan freshman Patrick Maloney provided the clincher at No. 6 with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 win while the match at No. 4 went unfinished with OU’s Ferran Calvo leading 5-2 in the third.

Florida snapped a two-match losing streak to Florida State with a 4-1 win in a match that started outdoors and finished indoors due to weather. The Tennis Channel CollegeMatch Day special saw the Gators take the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and then they added straight set wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 with sophomore Andy Andrade clinching at No. 2 with a 6-4, 7-6 win. Florida State played without Aziz Dougaz, reasons unknown, who normally plays No. 1 singles and doubles.

“It feels good. It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. Even though we got up by winning the doubles point and winning the first two singles to go up 3-0, that fourth point was tough to get. Give (Florida State) a lot of credit. That team just plays us tough every single time we play them. They are a gritty group that competes really well. They gave us all that we wanted tonight and more. I’m really proud of our guys for how they hung in there.

(The atmosphere was) incredible. The USTA does such a good job of putting on an event like this for us. To have the Tennis Channel involved as well is such a huge bonus. We are thrilled to be a part of it, we hope that we’ll be able to be a part of this for years to come. I know that we’ve already signed up for next year and we’re excited to be back. It’s just a first-class operation here, and a lot of good people are doing a lot of work to put this thing together. So we are very thankful.” Head Coach Bryan Shelton

Florida came out great, said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. They came out fast in doubles and they really controlled the first set of the match. We were working our way back in the match, but it wasnt enough.

Lucas came back from down 5-1 in the first set and Rana came back after losing the first set to take his match in three. Alex put himself in a chance to win the second set up 5-2 and had three set points. I thought we really battled well as a team down 3-0 and didnt give up. It was the first time Juni (Juan Martin Jalif) got to play and he fought hard in a tough position. It was hard for us to play without Aziz but I thought everyone did a great job today

UCLA remained undefeated at 3-0 after going on the road and knocking off No. 9 Oklahoma State 4-1.  The Bruins took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 and then added four opening sets in singles. UCLA’s Abi Altick was off the court first after her opponent retired down 2-5 in the first set at No. 4 but the Cowgirls would get on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 win from Catherine Gulihur at No. 6. UCLA’s Alaina Miller made it 3-1 after Sofia Blanco retied down 0-2 in the third. Blanco had led 6-1, 4-1 before the wheels came off. Elysia Bolton would give UCLA the W after clinching with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2. 

“We knew coming in we were a little banged up we knew that coming in from last night at Arkansas,” coach Chris Young said. “Those two hadn’t lost all season, so for our two best points this year to not be able to complete their match due to injury, it changes the dynamic a little bit.”

“I thought UCLA came out and played with great energy and purpose in doubles,” Young said. “I felt like we still had a little bit of a hangover from last night and didn’t start really well. As matches started to wear on, you could see the level was very similar across the board.”

“I think it was a really good bounce back from how I played against Arkansas,” Gulihur said. “It was a really tough loss for me and the team and coming back and being able to play so strong and be on top of my game with the energy I had was really a good confidence booster for me.”
