Sunday Recap: Boston College Upsets #10 Syracuse; Michigan Mauls #6 Texas; Vandy Bounces Back Against Northwestern; Notre Dame Knocks Off Another Top 15 Foe

Boston College pulled off the upset of the day on Sunday with a historic first-ever top 10 win when it upset No. 10 Syracuse 4-3 in a match that started before noon but almost lasted until the kickoff of the Super Bowl. The Eagles, now 7-0, jumped out to the early lead with what turned out to be a crucial doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Syracuse bounced back in singles and took the opening set on three of the four courts in action however each team would claim two wins a piece which meant it’d come down to the final two matches to go on court at No. 5 and No. 6. Syracuse tied it up at 3-3 with a straight set win at No. 6 but BC would get the clincher from freshman Laura Lopez who picked up a 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5. 

“I am so proud of how hard our girls compete,” said head coach Nigel Bentley. “They have worked so hard. They understand there are no short cuts. They earned an awesome win today against a top-10 team. Our captain senior Jackie Urbinati had another amazing third set comeback and everyone really fed off her energy. Yufei Long was outstanding beating one of the nation’s top players.”

“To watch Laura get her first ACC win under that kind of pressure was tremendous to witness. The doubles teams battled hard every point, and everybody contributed to this complete team win. I’m very happy for our team and program, it’s a great day for BC women’s tennis.”

Michigan ran its record to 3-1 after a convincing 6-1 rout over No. 6 Texas. The Wolverines took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then added five first sets in singles. All six matches would finish in straight sets with Michigan senior Kate Fahey providing the clincher at No. 1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bianca Turati who spent a portion of last year as the ITA No. 1 ranked singles player. 

Michigan will be idle for the next three weeks before returning to action at home against Pepperdine and North Carolina the weekend of Feb 22-24. Texas heads to Seattle this coming weekend for the National Team Indoors.

Vanderbilt bounced back from a Saturday loss to No. 3 North Carolina with a 5-2 win on Sunday over No. 12 Northwestern. The Commodores had to overcome the loss of the doubles point after Northwestern picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 but they didn’t trail for long after freshman Carolyn Campana rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4. Vandy took the lead with a straight set win from Fernanda Contreras at No. 1 and Emily Smith made it 3-1 after winning 12 of the final 13 games at No. 5. Vandy junior Christina Rosca clinched the match with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 with the teams then splitting the two remaining matches which were played out. 

“We have a lot of respect for Northwestern, they played a quality doubles point and for us to regroup to win on five out of six courts is incredible. They’re a great team so we view this as a quality win,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald.

Notre Dame finished off the weekend with a second top 15 win after defeating No. 14 Texas A&M 5-2. The Irish, which are now 6-0, picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 and then they added four opening sets in singles with two of them coming in tiebreaks. Richard Ciamarra made it 2-0 with a dominating win at No. 2 but Hady Habib would put the Aggies on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3. If was Habib’s first dual-match since the 2016-17 season after he left the program last year to play on the pro circuit.  Texas A&M’s Austin Abbrat tied the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5 but Notre Dame would take the final three matches with Alex Lebedev clinching at No. 1 with a 7-6, 6-1 win. 

“It was another great performance from our team,” Callaghan Family Head Coach Ryan Sachire said. “Texas A&M was a final four team last year so we knew it was going to be a tough match. They have been a consistently strong program and that’s something we’re working to become. We’re not a finished product but we been doing a great job competing as one unit this season.
