Sunday Recap: Texas Men & Women Score Top 10 Wins; Florida Takes Big One Over Texas A&M; Plus Other Sunday Results

Sunday was a big day for the University of Texas with the men’s team edging #6 Baylor 4-3 at home in front of a national television audience on the Longhorn Network while the women’s team went on the road to Stillwater and defeated #9 Oklahoma State 5-2.

The Texas men found themselves down 1-0 after dropping the doubles point at 1 and 2 but straight set wins in singles from Christian Sigsgaard, Yuya Ito, and Rodrigo Banzer put them in front 3-2. UT senior Colin Markes clinched the win at No. 5 with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Sven Lah while BU’s Will Little closed out the night at No. 4 with a win over Harrison Scott to make the final 4-3.

The Texas women were able to get the early momentum at Oklahoma State after winning the doubles decider at No. 2 in a tiebreak 8-6. In singles, Texas took four of six opening sets but the first two to finish were at No. 4 and No. 5 with Oklahoma State’s Marina Guinart and Sofia Blanco winning 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-3. UT’s Katie Poluta tied it up at 2-2 with a straight set win at No. 6 and Bianca Turati made it 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1. Petra Granic put the Horns over the top with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (2) at No. 3 while Anna Turati followed suit with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 2.

“This was huge match for us,” Texas interim head coach Bruce Berque said. “With Baylor, we know their ranking of being No. 6 in the country, but we also know they’re one of the more competitive teams in the country. With us having lost the doubles point and to come back out and have such strong performances on so many courts (in singles) was impressive. It was a great performance by our guys and a testament to the senior leadership we have on this team.”

“Congratulations to Texas as they played a great match. We struggled to take advantage of some opportunities today, but we will get better. It will be great to be back at home next weekend starting with Oklahoma on Friday, followed by Oklahoma State on Sunday.”

“Credit to them,” said Oklahoma State coach Chris Young. “They made a lot of hustle plays and won a lot of the deuce points. It really came down to the big points. They won the majority of them in crucial situations. The big key was doubles. We let the doubles point slip away, and we were playing from behind.”

“We were out here for about four hours,” Young said. “It was a great college match. I thought both teams competed extremely hard. We fought to the very end and fought off several overall match points.”

Florida all but locked up the regular season SEC Championship with a 5-2 win at home over #7 Texas A&M. The Gators dropped the doubles point but came back strong in singles and took all six opening sets. Oliver Crawford, Sam Riffice, and Duarte Vale won in straight sets to make it 3-1 but Texas A&M narrowed the gap with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win by Valentin Vacherot at No. 3.  Texas A&M forced third sets on the other two courts but Florida would pull them both out with Lukas Greif clinching at No. 5 with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(3) win while Johannes Ingildsen came back from 3-1 down in the third set to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 4.

“Every single guy was fired up because they beat us three times last year and they were undefeated this year in the SEC, so we knew it was a huge match and we just wanted to give our best effort and go out swinging today. We did that and I’m proud of our team.”

“It feels unbelievable being a freshman and being able to clinch that match. I can’t thank the guys that cheered me on enough because I couldn’t have done that without them. It’s just me out there but it’s all them supporting me and it’s incredible.”

“I thought it was a very good college tennis match and give a lot of credit to Florida for coming back after the doubles,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “Today was the first time in a long time that we got blanked in the first set of singles, but thought our guys responded very well. At one point in the third sets on a couple of courts it looked like we were going to slip away with the win, but give Florida credit as they outplayed us in the end. The two tiebreakers were pivotal and they took both of those. We love our team and their fight, we will live on to fight another day.”
