In South Bend at the Midwest Regional, 6 of the top 8 seeds moved into the quarterfinals where they’ll be joined by Michigan’s Carter Lin (12.51) who beat not 1 but 2 top 11 seeds. Lin first upset the #11 seed Toledo’s Stjepan Sisko (13.30) 6-4, 6-4 then followed that up by beating the #7 seed Valpo’s Jeffrey Schorsch (13.59) 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Ohio State has 3 in the quarters with Chris Diaz, Ralf Steinbach, and Herkko Pollanen all advancing and they had a 4th in contention before freshman Martin Joyce fell to Illinois’s Aron Hiltzik 6-3, 7-6 in the Round of 16.  The host Irish have 2 still remaining in #1 Quentin Monaghan and Eddy Covalschi while Illinois’s Aron Hiltzik and Northwestern’s Strong Kirchheimer round out the quarters.

Northwest (Seattle, WA) – Washington had a nice day on its home courts with the host Huskies going 7-1 in the 2 main draw rounds of singles. Mitch Stewart, Jake Douglas, and Gal Hakak each won twice while newcomer Enzo Sommer won his Round of 32 match before falling to the #1 seed Florian Lakat 6-1, 6-4 in the Round of 16. Stanford’s Nolan Paige had one of the most impressive days, if not the most impressive, after he defeated UC Davis’s Alec Adamson 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 and the #3 seed Filip Bergevi 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Paige will meet Hakak in the quarters.  Bay Area rivals Cal and Stanford squared off 5 times with Stanford winning 3 of the matches though each team placed 2 guys in the quarters.

Mountain (Albuquerque, NM) –  Draws – Saturday was a battle of Utes versus Pioneers in the semifinals and while both teams were hoping for a sweep they had to settle for a split. Utah freshman Dan Little hadn’t dropped a set in his previous 4 matches but after losing the second set to Denver junior Yannik James he dug deep and pulled out a  6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3 win. In the other semifinal it was Denver junior and #2 seed Diogo Rocha getting pushed to a 3rd set for the 3rd time this week but as he had done in his other two matches he came through and knocked off Utah senior Matt Cowley 6-7(4), 6-1, 7-5.

Northeast 
(New Haven, CT) – The Lions did a lot of roaring on Saturday as 6 guys from Columbia moved into the Round of 16 including Timothy Wang who came through qualies and has now won 5 matches this week by the scores of 6-0, 6-1; 6-2, 6-2; 6-2, 6-1; 6-2, 6-2; and 6-3, 6-3. Cornell’s highly touted freshman David Volfson (ITA #2 Newcomer)  made his collegiate singles debut and got all he wanted from Penn’s Nicholai Westergaard before pulling through with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 decision.

Penn senior Zachary Lessen (12.50) knocked off Harvard freshman and #9-16 seed Andy Zhou (13.54) 4-6, 7-6, 7-5 in what doubled as a UTR upset.

SEC Fall Classic (Auburn, AL) – Florida’s Elliott Orkin stayed undefeated on the week by winning his 3rd and 4th matches in straight sets and in fact he hasn’t dropped a set this week. Orkin will meet Mississippi State’s Rishab Agarwal in the finals after Agarwal beat Vanderbilt’s Cameron Klinger 7-6 in the 3rd in the quarters and Luis Valero 6-3, 7-6 in the semis. Agarwal has been on a tear over the last 2 weeks after making a run from the qualies to the semifinals of the Houston Future last week.
