What if the team that lost first round in a very close match to the eventual Champion, and the team that made the final four got blown out? They both lost to the same team.
Because they had a losing record and are a bad team.
How is that "bush league"? Isn't it a better achievement to make the final four than it is to lose in the 1st round?
Connor Farren is still listed at #119 in ITA rankings as of April 26. No dual matches and no longer listed on the Southern Cal roster.
The guy makes the perfect point! It's a TOURNAMENT, to determine a WINNER. Programs that publicize making it to certain rounds etc, That's Bush League.

Most important result of the tournament isn't whether kids learn about how to win and lose it's about whether the big time coach meets the expectations of his alumni and whether they will keep him around a couple more years.

How many NCAA tournament matches end with players and coaches from both teams lining up and shaking hands with all the other players and coaches??? NCAA tennis could learn a BIG LESSON from Stanley Cup. Hockey is MUCH MORE physical than tennis, is much more of a TEAM sport. College players and coaches can be very SNARKY. It doesn't lend itself to improving a fan base that generates revenues of less than one percent of football or basketball.
I noticed it was going to be no-ad scoring in this year's NCAA's. When did that start?
If getting to the final rounds makes a difference in job security how has the coach at Mich State stayed put for over twenty years of losing seasons???
Alabama had plenty of chances to win their way into the tournament.
Did you seriously just call college tennis fans the most petty pitiful group of all sports? What planet are you living on?
Pollanen had some close matches, lost, or was losing matches when the match ended. Steinbach has almost been undefeated. The ranking took into account the fall season and Pollanen was playing great then.
Good gosh… College tennis fans are the most petty pitiful group I have ever seen. This is worse than USTA women's league. Just play who they put in front of you!!! My goodness, just play. Does anybody accept challenges anymore? That's not fair…boo hoo..
Austin:

If you equate it to NCAA basketball tournament, USF is a #5 seed having to play the highest ranked #3 seed 2nd round instead of the lowest #4 seed, likewise for Florida having to play a much tougher team than they should. UK is a 5/6 having to play the highest ranked #2 seed 2nd rd instead of a 3/4 seed. It certainly matters to have a balanced bracket, for all teams sake. If you are going to just dump all the teams in the same, what's the point of the entire regular season, right? Making the final site is a huge deal, I don't know why anyone who follows college tennis would think otherwise. Matters to the players, certainly matters to the coaches whose jobs depend on tournament success.
It is odd that the Wahoo's listed Alex Ritschard at #4. He has not played a dual this year. Mac Styslinger is now #8 after being #4 for much of the year. Most other teams are bringing 6 or 7 players. UVa has choice of 10.
How did Indiana not make it?
If you play in a major conference you have so much built in opportunity. Alabama doesn't deserve to get in, they just need to get better.
I have zero sympathy for a team that plays top 30 teams week in and week out and still can't get enough big wins to be ranked higher. Not sure you know this, so I'll fill you in: 4-3 losses are losses.
Left school to go play Futures – been playing overseas a lot – Qatar the last three weeks, Bahrain and Greece before that. Picked up a few ATP points.
Just through them out off the top of my head right after seeing the draws – no science involved.
what are you basing those percentages on?
Does anyone know what happened with Connor Farren at SC? Used to be a top junior and I feel like USC could've really used him this year especially at their #6 position which they have struggled with. Verboven can't seem to win at 6 unless they play easier teams and Peter Smith seems to have no faith in Bellamy or Jaede at the moment.
You're wrong. Teams certainly take more pride in making the round of 16 than losing first round, and quarters and semis etc. Teams hand banners of achievements based on how far they went. It's not just champion or bust. If that was the case then the tournament should probably be only about 8 teams
At least Ohio State isn't playing Diaz number one all year, like much of last year. Pollanen and Steinbach are pretty simular.

Harris should be two.

Who SHOULD Kentucky get to play??? It's a draw. They should be happy they don't have to play OSU First Round. I have no idea why people think EVERY team should be placed on a draw. The tournament is to determine a CHAMPION, not so that a team can say, "Yeah we won a round!" "Yeah we went two rounds!!" "Yeah, we got to the quarters!!!"
If Florida and South Florida match was on neutral courts it would be a more even and interesting match up! South Florida doesn't get nearly as many chances to get nine great wins as a team like Florida or most of the SEC had. Now South Florida has to play the first two rounds as two away matches and Florida fans are complaining that they shouldn't have to play a team as good as South Florida???

Why does everyone think every team needs to be placed based on their final ranking??? A tournament is designed to determine a CHAMPION in the fairest possible way. Previous posters were suggesting teams ranked 17 like Illinois or South Florida had NO CHANCE of winning when Illinois beat number one Virginia this year.

Upsets happen in EVERY tournament, 16 seeds are plenty of seeds to make the draw a fair way to determine this year's champion. Changing the way the top sixteen seeds get to play the first two rounds at home would make the tournament fairer for all teams and more interesting.
screw the stupid ITA rankings. No way you can tell me Memphis and Dartmouth deserved to get in over Alabama.
Austin's thoughts:

1) they hurt both Florida & USF by placing them together. Neither should have to face such a tough opponent in the 2nd round. They did it all in the name of location, which is wrong. The only other reason I could see is to avoid another SEC team going to Gainesville, avoiding a conference matchup that early in the tournament.

2) Kentucky going to Ohio State is another example of geography and avoiding a conference matchup in the 2nd round. They shouldn't have to play a seed that high in the 2nd round.

3) How is Andrew Harris even allowed to be placed at #1? He has hardly played, may still not play, and Alvarez has been playing #1 both this year and last year.

4) Steinbach is undefeated at #4 this year for Ohio State, yet they put Pollanen above him, odd.

5) Justin Roberts hasn't played a single match at #5 for USF this season, at least that finished.

6) Has Maxx Lippman been injured or has his singles game just fallen that much?

7) Crazy to think Ben Wagland used to play #1, now he isn't even 1st alternate in singles, ouch, what a regression.

8) Terrell Whitehurst isn't even listed for Florida State in singles or doubles. Is he injured or is he no longer on the team? He is still on their roster.
