The ITA released its second set of computerized team rankings today and we now have a new mens No. 1 with Ohio State taking over the top spot while Virginia drops to No. 2. Wake Forest stayed at No. 3, Oklahoma moved up one spot to No. 4, and Oklahoma State moved up three spots to No. 5. This set of rankings used each team’s five best wins and all losses so even though Virginia had the head-to-head victory Ohio State’s body of work at this point in the season was just a little bit better. North Carolina and Baylor each picked up wins on Monday afternoon with North Carolina getting it done on the road while Baylor won at home. North Carolina went to Nashville and took out Vanderbilt 6-1 despite playing without its No. 1 Ronnie Schneider. UNC took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then the Heels took three of five opening sets at Vandy’s five court indoor facility. William Blumberg, Robert Kelly, and Bo Boyden won in straight sets at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5 while Vanderbilt picked up a straight set win from Cameron Klinger at No. 2. Second-ranked Ohio State played its first outdoor match of the year this afternoon at No. 10 Florida and despite dropping the doubles point the Buckeyes would come back strong in singles to win it 4-1. Florida’s Josh Wardell and Chase Perez-Blanco dropped the opening game of their match at No. 3 but they’d win the next five and eventually close it out 6-2. Ohio State’s Hugo Di Feo and Martin Joyce served for the match at No. 2 up 5-4 but Florida’s Maxx Lipman and Elliott Orkin broke Joyce from 15/40 to even it at 5-all. The 69th Blue Gray Tennis Classic came to an end on Saturday with the Rice men and Auburn women capturing titles by winning three matches in a 30-hour window. Rice started the day on Friday with a 4-0 win over Boise State and then Rice and Virginia Tech met in the semifinals with the doubles point played on Friday while singles was played Saturday morning. Rice only dropped two points in doubles and then the Owls won 9 of 11 sets in singles with David Warren clinching the 4-0 win. For the second day in a row USC got pushed on its home courts but just as they did yesterday against Cal Poly they fought back and came away with a 4-3 win over Stanford. Stanford jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in this non-conference matchup after taking the doubles point but USC came back with wins from Brandon Holt, Jack Jaede, and Riley Smith to go in front 3-1.
