US Open Qualies Roll Into Round 2; World University Games Hit The Stretch Run

The opening round of qualifying at the US Open wrapped up on Wednesday with the guys with college ties going 12-14 while the girls went 5-5. UCLA and USC were the only schools to put more than one player through to the men’s second round while on the women’s side Stanford was the only school to do the same. Those that played college tennis last season went 2-4 with Cameron Norrie and JC Aragone picking up wins while JJ Wolf, William Blumberg, Francesca Di Lorenzo, and Ashley Lahey came up short. It’ll be a busy week for many current and former collegians as they try to qualify for the 2017 US Open. There are 26 players with college ties in the men’s qualifying draw with two first round matches pitting one against another. There are 10 players with college ties in the women’s draw with the only college versus college match coming when Francesca Di Lorenzo faces Nicole Gibbs. Gojo, Koepfer, King Advance In Winston-Salem Qualies; Vukic Into Finals In Poland; ACI Field Announced; Arizona State Releases Non-Conference Schedule

Wake Forest rising sophomore Borna Gojo is one match away from qualifying for the main draw at the ATP 250 Winston-Salem Open after he picked up his first-ever top 100 win on Saturday. Gojo, who entered the weekend with an ATP ranking of 808, held off Belgium’s Ruben Bemelmans (ATP #100) 7-6(3), 3-6, 7-6(6) in 2 hours and 29 minutes. Gojo fell behind 2-0 in the opening set before winning three straight and he’d eventually take the set in a tiebreak. Bemelmans forced a third set after earning the only break in the second at 5-3 and then he’d go up a break in the third at 2-1. Gojo broke back for 3-3 and a few games later he’d have a pair...

ITA National Summer Championships; US Open Wild Cards Announced; Coaching Updates

The brief college tennis summer session officially came to a close on Tuesday with singles and doubles champions crowned at the ITA National Summer Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Notre Dame junior Alex Lebedev won the men’s singles championship after winning a pair of matches on Tuesday. Lebedev edged Penn junior Kyle Mautner 7-6, 5-7, 10-6 in the semifinals then a few hours later in the finals he defeated defeated Omaha sophomore Razvan Grigorescu 6-3, 6-2. Lebedev entered the event as the No. 10 seed and won all his matches in straight sets except for the match with Mautner. Winthrop junior Lauren Proctor won the women’s singles...

Ohio State rising sophomore JJ Wolf was a set away from winning the 2017 USTA Boys 18 National Championship in Kalamazoo but Patrick Kypson fought back to win the fourth and fifth sets to come away with the title and US Open main draw wild card. Kypson had the upper-hand for most of the first set with the 17-year old from Greenville (NC) holding serve rather quickly while Wolf had to work for his holds. Ohio State rising sophomore JJ Wolf is one win away from earning a main draw wild card into the US Open after he defeated Cornell commit Alafia Ayeni 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals of the USTA Boys 18 National Championship in Kalamazoo. Wolf’s previous best singles performance at the Zoo was two years ago when he made it to the semifinals of the Boys 16 before falling to Patrick Kypson who then went on to win the title the next day. It just so happens that Wolf’s opponent in Sunday’s final will be Patrick Kypson after the 17 year-old from Greenville, North Carolina, rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ryan Goetz.
