National Indoor Intercollegiates Day 1 – Singles Seeds Roll While Doubles Seeds Get Rolled

Each of the top three seeds in the singles draws advanced to the Round of 16 but the top seeds in the doubles draws weren’t as fortunate. The top seed in the men’s singles draw, Ohio State’s Mikael Torpegaard, only dropped four games in his straight set win over Texas freshman Christian Sigsgaard while the top seed in the women’s draw, Ohio State’s Francesca Di Lorenzo, only dropped two games in a rout over Nevada’s Claudia Herrero. Arkansas, Ohio State, Virginia, and Wake Forest each went 2-0 in men’s singles action while Cal and Texas went 0-2. There were two upsets by seed though neither would really be...

National Indoor Intercollegiates Singles Draws by the Numbers

The draws were released on Tuesday night for the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships which will be held at the USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. We already knew the top seeds but now we have the matchups to go with those seeds. Since the singles draw is limited to 32 players there aren’t many first round mismatches so it should be wall-to-wall quality tennis all weekend. Another great thing about this tournament is the schedule which has the championship matches on a Sunday and not a Monday (Men’s AA/National Team Indoors) or Tuesday (NCAA).Women’s Field By The Numbers Schools with...

Holt Wins SoCal; Pro Circuit Recaps; College ATP Rankings

USC freshman Brandon Holt won the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on Monday afternoon with a straight set win over senior teammate Nick Crystal. Holt broke Crystal from 30/40 to take the opening set 6-4 but Crystal looked like he’d take the early break lead in the second after going ahead 0/40 on Holt’s 1-1 service game. Holt managed to come back and hold for 2-1 but Crystal would even it at 2-2 after coming back from 15/40 down. Crystal finally got the break, on the deciding point, to go up 3-2 but he wouldn’t win another game the rest of the way. Crystal double faulted the break back to Holt and then Holt held on the...

All-USC SoCal Intercollegiate Final; Spencer Furman Wins Singles Title in Charlotte, Wake Women Excel in Knoxville,

The finals are set at the 60th Southern California Intercollegiate Championships and it’ll be an All-USC final between two guys that may anchor the singles lineup this coming season. USC senior Nick Crystal earned his spot in the finals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UCLA sophomore Max Cressy while USC freshman Brandon Holt defeated his junior teammate Thibault Forget 6-3, 7-5. Holt and Crystal were the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds respectively with sophomore Logan Smith the top seed although he got knocked out in second round by Cressy. USC sophomore Jake DeVine saw his first action since last April (torn arm ligaments) and despite a first round loss he won a few...

Weekend Preview, NIIC Seeds, Manny to the Hall, Recommended Reads

The fall college tennis season is coming around the final turn and starting to make its way toward the finish line. The past two weekends have been loaded up with the ITA Regional Championships and the Oracle ITA Masters and while there isn’t a major tournament this weekend there are several good ones to follow. USC is hosting the 60th Southern California Intercollegiate Championships with a strong field that will be able to experiment with PlaySight’s PlayFair Challenge System (this will be the first college tournament to use it). Live streaming of the event is available here and you can view all the draws, seeds, and scores at the...

National Indoor Intercollegiate Selections Announced

The field for the 2016 National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City was revealed on Wednesday evening and for the most part everything went according to plan. All of the ITA Regional Championship winners are participating, which hasn’t always been the case in the past, and the USTA Singles Wild Cards went to the highest ranked healthy American that wasn’t already in line for an at-large selection. The reason I said healthy is because Florida’s Brooke Austin was actually the highest ranked American but since she is injured Cal’s Maegan Manasse got the bid.UCLA’s...
