2017 Oracle/ITA National Fall Championships
The following is the selection criteria from the ITA’s page:
The 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which serves as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule, is the only intercollegiate event to feature competitors from all five divisions competing for a national championship.
Through a combination of on-court competition and at-large berths and wild cards, there are several ways for student-athletes to qualify for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held November 1-5, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, California, and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.
To be considered for an at-large selection in singles, a player must have reached the quarterfinals of the Oracle ITA Masters, the Round of 16 of the All-American Championships or the quarterfinals of an ITA Regional Championship Presented by Oracle. At-large singles selections will be based on each players’ ITA/UTR Rankings Average. This average is a combination of a players’ ITA preseason national ranking, Universal Tennis Rating and ITA mid-season unpublished ranking.
Of the 10 at-large doubles selections, six will be made by the National Tournament Committee from the pool of regional finalists who submitted for consideration. The remaining four selections will be made by the National Tournament Committee from the remaining pool of regional finalists, All-American quarterfinalists and regional semifinalists who submitted for consideration.
Seeding will be based on the UTR weekly average as of Monday, October 30, 2017.

ITA Regionals – Idaho’s Marianna Petrei Wins Mountain Regional; Georgia Men Rollin in the Southeast; Illinois Women Strong in the Midwest
Idaho junior Marianna Petrei booked her spot at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships after defeating Colorado freshman Linda Huang 7-5, 6-4 in the finals of the Mountain Regional in Salt Lake City. Petrei entered the weekend as the No. 2 seed and ended up winning six matches while only dropping one set.
Purdue junior Silvia Ambrosio will meet Kentucky junior Justina Mikulskyte in the final of the Ohio Valley Regional after each defeated higher seeds on Sunday. Ambrosio ousted the No. 9 seed Kentucky’s Mami Adachi 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2 while Mikulskyte defeated the No. 4 seed Vanderbilt’s Amanda Meyer 6-4, 7-6(2). The doubles final will be an all-Kentucky affair with Mikulskyte and Lesedi Jacobs taking on Adachi and Akvile Parazinskaite.
Illinois has three of the final eight at the Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor and all three are freshman. Asuka Kawai, Mia Rabinowitz, and Emilee Duong have each knocked off a top four seed this weekend with Duong defeating Ohio State’s Anna Sanford, Rabinowitz defeating Northwestern’s Erin Larner, and Kawai defeating Notre Dame’s Allison Miller. Northwestern will be guaranteed a representative in the semifinals with Lee Or and Rheeya Doshi meeting in the quarterfinals after Or knocked out the top seed Michigan’s Kate Fahey. The doubles final will be an all-Northwestern tilt with Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp taking on Lee Or and Alex Chatt.
The Texas Regional semifinals at TCU will be contested between three of the top four seeds with two of them from Austin. Top seed Bianca Turati (TX) will meet No. 3 seed Maria Kononova (N. Texas) while No. 4 seed Petra Granic (TX) will meet the local favorite No. 13 seed Alexandra Zenovka (TCU).
Georgia has four of the final eight at the Southeast Regional which is taking place at Georgia Tech. Top seed Wayne Montgomery has yet to drop a set, Jan Zielinski is coming off a win over No. 6 seed USF’s Peter Bertran, Emil Reinberg is coming off a close three set win over Florida freshman Duarte Vale, and Walker Duncan is coming off a win over No. 7 seed USF’s Alberto Barroso-Campos. Florida’s other top freshman, Oliver Crawford, lost a close one in the third round to the No. 4 seed FSU’s Guy Iradukunda.
The Carolina Regional in Cary had a star-studded field but none of the big names are still around. Clemson’s Alex Favrot upset the top seed Nicolas Alvarez and will now meet Wake Forest freshman Bar Botzer who upset the No. 3 seed UNC’s Robert Kelly. UNC Asheville’s Henry Patten (#8 seed) advanced to the semifinals after defeating NC State’s Igor Saveljic. Saveljic defeated the No. 2 seed South Carolina’s Gabriel Friedrich earlier in the day. but he wasn’t able to pull off a second upset. Patten’s semifinal opponent will be Clemson’s Simon Baudry after the Mississippi State transfer defeated South Carolina’s Thomas Mayronne.
ITA Regional Update – Colorado’s Linda Huang and Purdue’s Silvia Ambrosio Chop Down Top Seeds
While some ITA Regionals just got started on Saturday there were a few that have already hit the later stages. The women’s Mountain Regional in Salt Lake City began on Wednesday and will wrap on Sunday and the surprise so far has been Colorado freshman Linda Huang (10.60). The freshman from Australia has yet to lose a collegiate match and now finds herself in the singles final after defeating the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Huang will face the No. 2 seed Idaho’s Marianna Petrei in Sunday’s final with first serve set for 11 a.m. MT.
Purdue junior Silvia Ambrosio had a great day on Saturday at the Ohio Valley Regional in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The transfer from Marquette advanced to the semifinals after wins over the top seed Kentucky’s Akvile Parazinskaite and the No. 12 seed Austin Peay’s Lidia Yanes Garcia. Ambrosio will meet Kentucky’s Mami Adachi in the semifinals on Sunday.
Below I have an update on each regional with most crowning champions on Monday or Tuesday.
ITA Regional Championships – Week 1
Over the next two weekends there will be 12 men’s and 12 women’s ITA Regional Championships held at campus sites across the country with the finalists advancing to the Oracle/ITA National Fall Championships in early November. This weekend there are two men’s regionals and five women’s regionals which means the other 17 will be held the following weekend.
Three of the seven regionals this weekend have a qualifying draw while the other four do not. Below I’ll list out the ones being held this weekend along with the top seeds in the singles draw (if draw released).
Pro Circuit Recap – Cameron Norrie Wins Second Consecutive Challenger; Andrew Harris Feeling at Home in Australia; Joao Monteiro Perfect in Portugal
Cameron Norrie ran his winning streak to 10 after winning a second straight $100K Challenger with this one coming in Stockton, California. Norrie only dropped four games in his finals win over Darian King which earned the former TCU star a $14,400 paycheck plus 90 ATP ranking points. Norrie’s biggest comeback of the week came against Brydan Klein in the second round. Norrie was down a set and a break at 6-4, 4-3 but he managed to take the second set in a tiebreak and then he pulled away in the third set. Norrie, who now has a new career high ranking of 111, talked to Mike Cation after the match with that conversation available at this link.
William Blumberg Tops Martin Redlicki To Win All-American Championship; Alfredo Perez/Johannes Ingildsen Win Dubs
North Carolina sophomore William Blumberg captured the 2017 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championship on Monday morning with a straight set win over UCLA senior Martin Redlicki. Blumberg was dominant on his serve with the sophomore winning 77% of the points on serve while only facing one break point. Redlicki served fairly well but he had a few tough games and that was the difference in the match.
Redlicki started off the match with a no-ad hold but Blumberg took the next three games with a pair of 40/15 holds and a break from 30/40 after Redlicki netted a forehand. After Redlicki held for 2-3, he had a break opportunity on the no-ad point but his service return was just long which made it 4-2 Blumberg. It’d be all holds the rest of the set though Redlicki fought off a set point on his 3-5 service game with a service winner on the no-ad point. Blumberg closed out the set with a hold from 40/15 to take it 6-4.
Redlicki had a rough first two games of the second set with one unforced error after another giving Blumberg a love break and a love hold to make it 2-0. Neither player would face a break point the rest of the way with Blumberg only dropping six points on serve and he’d close it out with a hold from 40/15 to win it 6-4, 6-4. The ITA will probably have a clip of match point but here is a clip from UNC’s Twitter that shows Blumberg tracking down a drop shot with a dropper of his own to win it.
Fernanda Contreras Wins Women’s All-American; Blumberg vs. Redlicki To Meet In Men’s Final
Vanderbilt junior Fernanda Contreras captured the Riviera/ITA All-American Singles Championship on Sunday afternoon with a straight set win over fellow qualifier Florida Atlantic sophomore Aliona Bolsova. Contreras, who had to win three matches in the qualifying draw just to make the main draw, broke Bolsova to go ahead 3-2 in the first set and then she added another break to take the set 6-3. In the second set Contreras broke midway through the set and then served it out to win 6-3, 6-3. Vanderbilt’s recap has a brief video interview with Contreras and the ITA did a great job on its post-match video recap which is just below.
