Women’s Super Regional Previews
Unlike two years ago when the Super Regionals were played at campus sites, this year due to COVID we will see them contested at the USTA National Campus in Orlando. Five of the eight Super Regional matches in 2019 were regular season rematches but this year there are zero. The reason for this is several conferences limited travel plus there were a handful of teams (Georgia, Florida State, Cal) that either opted out or wouldn’t have qualified for the reduced size Kickoff Weekend and subsequent National Team Indoors back in February.
For a full recap of how each team earned its spot in the Sweet 16 you can read my opening round recap at this link.

The women played Friday and Saturday this past weekend with 13 of the 16 national seeds advancing to the Sweet 16. The last time 3 regional hosts exited prior to the Sweet 16 was 15 years ago in 2006 when #10 California, #13 Pepperdine, and #15 Clemson went home early
USC may have entered the NCAA Tournament with an ITA ranking of No. 35 but that didn’t stop the Trojans from pulling off a pair of upsets to advance to Orlando. In USC’s opening round match against No. 22 Oklahoma, the Trojans came back from a 3-1 deficit to pull off a thrilling 4-3 win. Both Dani Wilson and Constance Branstine came back from a set down to win identical 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 scorelines at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. In the second round against host Florida, the Trojans grabbed the early lead after taking the doubles point and then picked up straight set wins in singles from Eryn Cayetano, Summer Dvorak, and Clare McKee. USC will be the lowest ranked team to play in a Sweet 16 match since 2004 when No. 44 Arizona State advanced past LSU and Texas in the opening two rounds before falling to Pac-12 rival Washington

The opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament brought us several close matches along with a handful of upsets. Since the tournament was expanded to 64 teams in 1999, there has always been at least 1 regional host that has failed to advance and this year saw 3 come up short.
Arizona, ranked No. 18, went to Kentucky and won what was expected to be, and was, the tightest regional. The Wildcats won a hotly contested battle in the first round over No. 46 Michigan. Arizona dropped the doubles point but won four of six singles matches with Gustaf Strom winning the final match left on court at No. 1 singles 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. In the second round, Arizona won the battle of the Wildcats and advanced to its first-ever Sweet 16 by knocking off the regional host and No. 14 seed Kentucky 4-2. Arizona won the doubles point and then in singles Herman Hoeyeraal, Carlos Hassey, and Jonas Ziverts picked up singles wins with Ziverts clinching at No. 2 with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 victory over #14 Gabriel Diallo.

The NCAA released the team brackets on Monday evening and on Tuesday the singles/doubles selections were made available with the actual bracket not set to come out until the end of the team event.
All of this year’s women’s regionals run on Friday and Saturday while the men are split between Friday/Saturday and Saturday/Sunday. All of the dual-site hosts have women on Friday/Saturday and men on Saturday/Sunday.
There are 7 schools that will host both the men and women with those being Baylor, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, UCF, and Virginia.
I’ll have my NCAA Tournament page up and running (see menu) and I plan on keeping it updated with schedules, scoring/video links, box scores, and more so make sure you keep it bookmarked.
