For most of the evening Steve Johnson looked down and out but the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Singles Champion showed some grit and rallied from two sets down to win in five over Russia's Evgeny Donskoy. Johnson had rocked Donskoy 6-1, 6-1 just a few weeks ago at the Rio Olympics so to see him down 4-6, 1-6, 2-5 (0-40) was surprising to say the least. Johnson fought off four match points in his 2-5 service game, broke from 30/40 to put the match back on serve, and then fought off two more match points on his 5-6 service game before rolling in the tiebreak. Johnson broke midway through the fourth set and then early in the fifth set before pulling out the 4-6, 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-3 win.

The 2012 and 2013 NCAA Women's Singles Champion didn't have any issues as Nicole Gibbs routed Aleksandra Krunic 6-1, 6-0 in 60 minutes. Unfortunately all the other former college participants went down as Rajeev Ram, Benjamin Becker, and Ellen Perez lost.

The mixed doubles draw is out and there will be 16 former college players participating with all the names listed further below. The men and women's doubles draws get underway tomorrow so I'll start updating those results along with the singles results each day. Here is the US Open's Day 3 order of play if you hadn't seen it already.

Ohio State junior Mikael Torpegaard made the biggest jump of current college players in this week's ATP rankings rising from 797 to 650 after his 18 points were added in from winning the Futures event in Helsinki.

Lukas Ollert (Auburn '15) made the biggest jump of all college players by coming up 441 spots to 1105 after his six semifinal points from the Collonge-bellerive, Switzerland, Futures were added in.

John Isner retook the top overall spot from Steve Johnson but Isner is defending 180 points (R16) at the US Open while Johnson already surpassed last year's performance his win over Donskoy.

I listed everyone that I recognized with at least 2 ATP points but if I skipped over someone let me know. To view the table below in a separate window click here - there are two tabs below - one for current players and the other for both current and former players (combined).
