Cal Poly was supposed to kick off its season in Fresno last Friday but the weather had other plans so today’s match in Boise was the Mustangs opener. Cal Poly took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 and then it jumped on Boise State in singles by taking opening sets on five of six courts. Antoine Noel started things off with a straight set win at No. 5 and then both Ben Donovan and Corey Pang followed suit with fairly routine wins at No. 2 and No. 1 with Pang getting the clincher at No. 1. They played the remaining courts out with Cal Poly’s Axel Damiens winning at No. 6 in straight sets while Garrett Auproux won a third set supertiebreak at No. 4 to make it 6-0. Boise State’s Jack Heslin earned the Broncos lone point with at third set supertiebreak win at No. 3.

Post-Match Quotes from Cal-Poly’s recap

“Our win today was a great way to start our season,” said head coach Nick Carless. “We were chomping at the bit to get our dual season going since our match against Fresno got cancelled. With that being said, we came out a little rusty in doubles but found a way to pull it out and took the momentum into singles and ran with it.”

“I thought our freshman Antoine especially had a great day clinching the doubles point with Karl and being the first player to put a point on the board for us in singles,” said Carless. “For Antoine, that is a great way to start his college career.”
