Wimbledon qualies officially got underway on Monday but several matches were pushed back until today due to rain. Former college players performed pretty well today going 6-6 although there were two head-to-head matches that guaranteed at least two winners. Austin Krajicek won the closest match of the day by knocking off former Tennessee All-American JP Smith 11-9 in the third. The only break of serve in the final set came when Smith got broke from 15/40 while serving at 9-10.

Former Memphis Tiger Joe Salisbury, ATP #706, won his first-ever qualifying match at a Grand Slam with a come from behind 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 win over ATP #163 Alessandro Giannessi. It didn’t look good for Salisbury when he trailed 6-4, 5-3 but he held from 40/30 and then broke from 15/40 to even it at 5-5. Salisbury jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set tiebreak and took it 7-3 to force a third set. Salisbury broke to go up 3-2 in the third and then he broke again to go up 5-2. Giannessi broke to make it 5-3 but Salisbury broke on a one-deuce game to win it.

Marcelo Arevalo (Tulsa ’11), ATP #217, won his first-ever Grand Slam qualifying match with a 6-4, 7-6(3), win over ATP #209 Constant Lestienne. Arevalo got broke serving for it up 6-5 in the second but he managed to take the tiebreak 7-3.

Daniel Nguyen (USC ’12), ATP #223, won his second-ever Grand Slam qualifying match with a 6-3, 6-3 win over ATP #162 Marton Fucsovics. Nguyen won a round at the US Open last August before falling in the second round.

Ed Corrie (Texas ’11), ATP #358, won his second-ever Grand Slam qualifying match with a 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 win over ATP #202 Tommy Paul. Corrie trailed 3-1 in the third before he held on a one-deuce game, broke on a one-deuce game, and held from 40/30 to go up 4-3. Neither player faced another break point until Corrie went up 15/40 on Paul’s 5-6 service game. Paul fought off the first match point but Corrie closed it out on the next one.

Dennis Novikov (UCLA ’13), ATP #146, actually won his first round match on Monday when he defeated ATP #304 Lloyd Glasspool (Texas ’15) 6-2, 7-5.

Jesse Witten (Kentucky ’05) won the men’s singles draw at the US Open National Playoff Hawaii Sectional after only dropping 6 games in 4 matches. Eva Raszkiewicz, who played at Syracuse for one season in 2011, won the women’s singles draw via a walkover in the finals. Stanford rising sophomore Michael Genender earned his first-career ATP point after beating fellow qualifier Spencer Furman (Duke Commit) 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round of the $25K Richmond, Canada, F3 Futures (Hard). Genender’s second round opponent will be the winner of the Philip Bester/Kevin Kylar match.

Texas rising redshirt sophomore Julian Zlobinsky earned his first-career ATP point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Collin Johns at the Rochester, New York, USA F20 Futures (Clay). Zlobinsky will meet the winner of the Hans Hach/Justin Butsch match in the second round.
