Another Power 5 Job Opens Up, NCAA Regional Previews – Wake Forest & Stanford

The number of head coaching jobs at Power 5 schools is now up to six after LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva announced on Monday that men’s head coach Jeff Brown was resigning after 20 years. Brown won just over 60 percent of the 517 matches he coached and was an even .500 against SEC competition. Brown’s LSU teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament 17 times however this year the Tigers fell well short after going 10-17 overall and just 3-9 in the SEC. Brown’s best seasons in Baton Rouge came in his first two seasons when he led the Tigers to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA semifinals. Alleva called the resignation a “mutual...

It was a busy weekend for several former collegiate players, and one current player, with the group collectively winning three pro singles titles and 12 doubles titles. Tennys Sandgren, who spent two years at Tennessee and just won the USTA’s French Open Wild Card, won his second Challenger of the year with a straight set win Joao Pedro Sorgi at the $75K Savannah Challenger.Kevin King (Georgia Tech ’12) won his fourth singles title and tenth doubles title after sweeping the Mexico F2 Futures in Villahermosa. Coaching Carousel Turning, Tennys Sandgren Headed To French Open, Brayden Schnur Wins In Nigeria

The NCAA Tournament hasn’t even started yet but coaching openings are popping up all across the country. We knew that Virginia had a men’s head coaching opening after Brian Boland announced he was headed to the USTA and on Friday we found out that the women’s job is going to be open as well. Virginia Athletic Director Craig Littlepage announced that Mark Guilbeau had resigned after 12 seasons with Virginia coming off a season in which it failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2008. Guilbeau led the Cavaliers to back-to-back conference championships in 2014 and 2015 and his 201 wins are second all-time in school...

ITA Releases Final Regular Season Rankings, Winterbotham Out at Tennessee, All-Conference Teams

The ITA released its final team, singles, and doubles rankings of the regular season with the team rankings falling in line with what I projected earlier in the week. The men’s top five was Wake Forest, Virginia, Ohio State, USC, and UCLA while the women’s top five was Florida, Ohio State, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, and Georgia. The NCAA followed the rankings when doing seeding on the men’s side but as we found out on Tuesday they did not on the women’s side with North Carolina moving up to No. 2 while Texas Tech passed Stanford for No. 6. In the men’s singles rankings the only change in the top 10 was Illinois...

Final Regular Season USTA Rankings, NCAA Singles/Doubles Selections Announced

The final USTA Top 25 of the regular season came out today with the Florida women remaining at No. 1 while the Virginia men replaced Wake Forest as the new men’s No. 1. Virginia defeated Wake Forest in the ACC Championship Final on Sunday to finish the regular season 28-1 while Wake Forest finished with a 27-2 record. Georgia, Oklahoma, and Mississippi State made the biggest jumps on the men’s side with Georgia coming up five spots to No. 8 after defeating Mississippi State in the SEC Championship Final, Oklahoma came up four spots to No. 10 after defeating Texas at the Big 12 Tournament, and Mississippi State came up four spots after...

Notes On The NCAA Women’s Bracket

I looked at the men’s bracket last night now I’ll take a look at the women’s bracket. Florida, which has been No. 1 all season, was named as the No. 1 seed with North Carolina grabbing the No. 2 despite finishing No. 4 in the final rankings which will be published on Thursday. If the committee would have gone solely off ranking then Ohio State would have been No. 2, Vanderbilt No. 3, and North Carolina No. 4. The other change came at No. 6 with Texas Tech jumping Stanford despite Stanford having almost a 3 point lead in the ITA rankings. It’s also interesting to note that all five of these changes revolved around Power 5 Conference...

Notes On The NCAA Men’s Bracket

The 2017 NCAA Tournament field was announced earlier today and there really weren’t any surprises compared to what I was expecting. ACC regular season champion Wake Forest was named as the top seed with the Demon Deacon’s half of the draw having all four Pac-12 hosts, both SEC hosts, and fellow ACC member North Carolina. Virginia, which is the two-time defending NCAA champion, drew the No. 2 seed and in their side of the draw they have all five Big 12 hosts, the lone midwest host (Ohio State), and Florida. Even though TCU is the No. 6 seed I think most would agree they are one of the best four teams in the country so in essence Virginia’s...
