Georgia came into Saturday’s match at Texas A&M with an undefeated conference record but a few hours later they’d be undefeated no more as Texas A&M played a tremendous match and came away with the win and the top seed in the SEC Tournament. Cal came into Friday evenings match against No. 23 Oregon with a perfect 33-0 record all-time against the Ducks but the streak nearly came to an end. Cal picked up the all-important doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 but Oregon came back in singles and picked up three quick straight set wins from Akihiro Tanaka, Cormac Clissold, and Ty Gentry to go in front 3-1. Cal came back to tie it up with Andre Goransson and Filip Bergevi each winning in straight sets so the match would be decided in a third set at No. 1 between a pair of Frenchmen. Third-ranked Virginia had its seniors on display on Thursday against No. 18 Georgia Tech and In front of a senior-day crowd of just under 1000 the Cavs rolled to a 6-1 win. Virginia took the early 1-0 lead after Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Alexander Ritschard broke Georgia Tech to close out a 6-4 win at No. 2. The singles portion of the match was pretty lopsided with Alexander Ritschard, Collin Altamirano, Carl Soderlund, and Henrik Wiersholm each only yielding five total games. The latest USTA Top 25 is out with both the Wake Forest men and Florida women remaining at No. 1. The men’s top four stayed the same with TCU moving up one spot to No. 5. The women’s top 10 remained largely unchanged with the only real move coming when North Carolina and Stanford swapped spots at No. 3 and No. 4. Oklahoma State and Northwestern made the biggest jumps on the men’s side with each coming up three spots to No. 6 and No. 21 respectively. The ITA released its latest team, singles, and doubles rankings today with the Wake Forest men and Florida women remaining in the top spots. In the men’s team rankings Stanford made the biggest jump inside the top 25 with the Cardinal coming up four spots to No. 15 after defeating USC last week. Notre Dame made the biggest overall leap in the top 50 with the Irish rising 11 spots after winning at Florida State. In the women’s top 25, Mississippi State was the only team to move more than two spots with the Bulldogs falling four spots to No. 20 after losses to Florida and South Carolina. TCU continued its hot streak on Monday afternoon when the Horned Frogs won its ninth straight match with a 4-0 win over No. 26 South Florida. TCU won the doubles point for the 14th time in 18 matches with a 6-1 win at No. 2 and a 6-4 win at No. 3. TCU won all six opening sets in singles and Reese Stalder was the first to finish with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6. Prior to Sunday, it’d been 16 years since Oklahoma State had last defeated a top 3 team but that’s exactly what they did on Sunday afternoon in Waco. Third-ranked Baylor jumped on Oklahoma State in doubles and picked up a pair of 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the early 1-0 lead. A day after USC lost a tough one at Stanford it rebounded and posted a 4-0 shutout over No. 12 Cal. USC’s No. 3 team of Rob Bellamy and Jack Jaede broke for a 4-3 lead and they’d close it out a few games later for a 6-4 win. It may have been wet on the east side of the San Francisco Bay (UCLA/Cal rained out) but on the south side it stayed dry long enough for Stanford to upset No. 5 USC 4-1. Stanford came into the match having lost its last four to USC and after dropping the doubles point it may have thought No. 5 wasn’t too far off. Stanford refocused in singles and took all six first sets and then one-by-one it managed to close them out in straight sets. The ITA and Universal Tennis have entered into a five-year partnership agreement which will have the UTR name attached to the ITA Summer Circuit plus all Summer Circuit events will utilize the UTR Event Management System. The ITA and Universal Tennis will work together to make the draws at each Summer Circuit event more level-based so I would hope going forward we won’t see many instances of a player with a 12.85 UTR taking on a player with a 10.25 UTR in the first round of an event. The announcement about the use of UTR Events will be appreciated by yours truly because I “tried” to cover some of the Summer Circuit events last year but...
