Saturday Recap: Stanford Stomps Vandy; UCLA Edges Cal; Arizona & Oklahoma State Win Blue Gray Titles; Michigan Clips Notre Dame 4-3

The big top 10 showdown on Saturday took place at Stanford with the No. 4 Cardinal hosting No. 7 Vanderbilt in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship Final. Stanford won that match in Winston-Salem 4-3 with some final court drama but this one on Saturday at Stanford was a pretty cut and dry win for the Cardinal. Stanford rolled through doubles only dropping two games each at No. 1 and No. 3 and then they added five first sets in singles with four of them being lopsided 6-1 scores. Wake Forest and Texas had played a lot of close matches over the past three years (four 4-3 matches) but on Saturday afternoon in Austin there wouldn’t be any suspense as the third ranked Demon Deacons would run over the eighth ranked Longhorns 4-0. The ITA top ranked doubles team of Skander Mansouri and Christian Seraphim jumped out to an early 3-0 lead at No. 1 and they’d make the break lead hold up and take it 6-3. After a busy weekend there were a handful of matches on Monday including one match that started on Sunday but finished on Monday due to rain. Seventh-ranked UCLA played its first indoor match of the year at Tulsa and judging by the final score it looks like they’ll be ready to go when they begin the National Team Indoors on Friday. Sunday capped off a terrific week for Georgia rising junior Ellen Perez as the Australia native won a total of 12 matches in route to sweeping both the singles and doubles titles at the ITF $10K in Brussels, Belgium. Since Perez entered the week unranked she had to play singles qualies and after winning all three of those matches in straight sets she mowed down the competition in the main draw.
