The USTA announced that the popular College MatchDay series will return to Lake Nona in 2018 with eight matches scheduled between February 3rd and April 15th. The series kicks off with the Florida State and Florida men and women playing simultaneously and then a week later the Georgia and Georgia Tech men will play on February 9. The USTA National Campus drew over 5300 fans a year ago including just under 1800 for Florida State’s upset win over Florida. John Peers (Baylor ’11) was the big winner this past weekend after he and his doubles partner Henri Kontinen won their first ATP Masters 1000 event at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris. Peers, who spent three years at Middle Tennessee State before transfering to Baylor for his senior year, and Kontinen defeated the ATP No. 1 team of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 3-6, 10-6. It was the fourth title this year for the pairing and overall it was Peers’s 23rd career title. 12 players with collegiate ties won pro titles last week with 10 of those titles coming within the United States. Jarmere Jenkins (Virginia ’13) won his first singles title of the year, seventh of his career, with a 6-1, 7-5 win over #292 Marc Polmans in the final of the $25K Australia F6 Futures in Brisbane. Interesting to note that five of Jenkins’s seven career titles have come in Australia. It’s officially time to open the book on another season of college tennis and the first page contains the preseason individual rankings which were released earlier on Tuesday. For those that weren’t aware these preseason rankings are simply last year’s final rankings with all the graduating seniors removed along with those that turned pro or are taking the fall off to play pro events. There are no freshmen included in these initial singles rankings although there is a list of the top 10 newcomers.
