While some ITA Regionals just got started on Saturday there were a few that have already hit the later stages. The women’s Mountain Regional in Salt Lake City began on Wednesday and will wrap on Sunday and the surprise so far has been Colorado freshman Linda Huang (10.60). The freshman from Australia has yet to lose a collegiate match and now finds herself in the singles final after defeating the No. 1 and No. 3 seeds in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Over the next two weekends there will be 12 men’s and 12 women’s ITA Regional Championships held at campus sites across the country with the finalists advancing to the Oracle/ITA National Fall Championships in early November. This weekend there are two men’s regionals and five women’s regionals which means the other 17 will be held the following weekend. Three of the seven regionals this weekend have a qualifying draw while the other four do not. The 2016 Division 1 ITA Regional Championships came to a close today with three more women sweeping singles and doubles titles. All said and done four women won both singles and doubles titles while just one man pulled off the same feat (see list at bottom of this post). Sweeps were the story of the day at several ITA Women’s Regional Championships across the country. Baylor, Pepperdine, and Kentucky each won singles and doubles titles at their respective regionals plus Michigan is going to sweep the Midwest Regional after winning the doubles title today and having an All-Wolverine singles final tomorrow.Stanford and Cal will both have players participating in tomorrow’s singles and doubles final in the Southwest Regional while Syracuse has a chance to sweep the Northeast. While the women’s regionals saw four teams get singles/doubles sweeps there weren’t any men’s teams able to pull off the same feat. Four of the five doubles finals went to a third set supertiebreak while three of six singles finals saw a third set though only one entered nailbiter status.
