Last week was another strong on the pro tour for players with college ties. The unstoppable doubles duo of Rob Galloway (Wofford ’15) and Ben Lock (Florida State ’16) ran their winning streak to 23 after winning a sixth straight doubles title. Galloway and Lock won a third straight doubles title in South Africa after previously winning three straight in Kuwait. They won their first three matches in straight sets and then in the finals of the South Africa F3 in Stellenbosch they edged Jaime Pulgar-Garcia (NC State ’12) and Javier Pulgar-Garcia (San Diego State ’12) 7-6, 6-7, 10-5. The United States had won the Master’U BNP Paribas for six straight years, and seven of the last eight, but Great Britain put an end to that streak with a 4-2 upset win last Sunday. The US came back from a 2-1 deficit in wins over France and Germany but it couldn’t do it a third time against Great Britain. UCLA sophomore Ena Shibahara put Team USA in front 1-0 after coming back from 3-0 down in the third set to win 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 but recent North Florida graduate Jack Findel-Hawkins tied it up after defeating UCLA senior Martin Redlicki 6-4, 6-4. While John Isner was keeping Team World alive in the Laver Cup there were several other players with college ties that were leaving their mark on pro events across the globe. Ryan Shane, who won the 2015 NCAA singles championship during his junior season at Virginia, swept both the singles and doubles titles at the $15K Laguna Niguel (CA) USA 31 Futures. Shane teamed up with former ACC rival Ronnie Schneider to win the doubles title with a 7-5, 6-2 win over TCU senior Trevor Johnson and BYU graduate Patrick Kawka. The Wimbledon main draws were released on Friday with 34 players with college ties set to compete at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. There were 23 former college players in the singles qualifying draws but Irina Falconi was the only one to come through with the former Yellow Jacket qualifying with a straight set win over Mariana Duque-Marino. Falconi’s reward for qualifying will be a match against the top seed and last year’s runner-up Angelique Kerber.There will be four former college players in the men’s singles draw and two in the women’s singles draw. It’ll be an All-ACC singles final on the campus of an ACC school after both Brayden Schnur and JC Aragone won their semifinal matches at the $25K USA F40 Futures in Tallahassee. Aragone (14.25), who had never made it past the first round of a pro event prior to this week, won a break-filled match over recent Tulane graduate Dominik Koepfer (14.43). Aragone started off the match by fighting off four break points to to hold in an eight-deuce game. There would then be five consecutive breaks until Koepfer stopped the streak with a hold for 3-3.
