Di Lorenzo and Redlicki Dominate No-Ad Points to Win National Titles

Ohio State came into Sunday with a chance to be the first school to sweep the men’s and women’s singles titles at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships since Stanford in 2001 (Alex Kim/Laura Granville) but while one Buckeye would play the all-important no-ad points to perfection the other wouldn’t fair as well. Ohio State sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo was attemping to become the first women to repeat as the NIIC Singles Champ since Arkansas’s Aurelija Miseviciute (2007/2008) while her opponent North Carolina senior Hayley Carter was trying to give North Carolina it’s second title in the last four years (Jamie...

National Indoor Intercollegiate Finals Are Set

Both of the top seeds from Ohio State pushed one step closer to singles championships but they’ll have experienced seniors on the oppostie side of the net on Sunday morning. Ohio State junior Mikael Torpegaard cruised past a pair of opponents on Friday but there’d be no cruising in the semifinals against Mississippi State sophomore Nuno Borges. Torpegaard broke Borges to start the match and held for 2-0 but Borges broke back and held to even it at 2-2. Torpegaard broke right back and held again for 4-2 and then a few games later served out the set from 40/15 to take it 6-4. Borges fought off a pair of break points to start the second set and...

NIIC Semifinals Are Set

The semifinals are set at the National Indoor Intercollegiates with both top seeds pushing through while both second seeds got shown the door. The men’s top seed Ohio State junior Mikael Torpegaard only dropped six games in two easy wins while the women’s top seed Ohio State sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo won a straight setter before getting past Vanderbilt’s Sydney Campbell in three sets. Georgia junior Wayne Montgomery upset the men’s second seed Virginia senior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski in a match where Kwiatkowski actually won seven more points. Montgomery took the opening set 6-3 but Kwiatkowski won a quick 6-1 second set....

National Indoor Intercollegiates Day 1 – Singles Seeds Roll While Doubles Seeds Get Rolled

Each of the top three seeds in the singles draws advanced to the Round of 16 but the top seeds in the doubles draws weren’t as fortunate. The top seed in the men’s singles draw, Ohio State’s Mikael Torpegaard, only dropped four games in his straight set win over Texas freshman Christian Sigsgaard while the top seed in the women’s draw, Ohio State’s Francesca Di Lorenzo, only dropped two games in a rout over Nevada’s Claudia Herrero. Arkansas, Ohio State, Virginia, and Wake Forest each went 2-0 in men’s singles action while Cal and Texas went 0-2. There were two upsets by seed though neither would really be...

National Indoor Intercollegiates Singles Draws by the Numbers

The draws were released on Tuesday night for the 2016 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships which will be held at the USTA Billie Jean National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. We already knew the top seeds but now we have the matchups to go with those seeds. Since the singles draw is limited to 32 players there aren’t many first round mismatches so it should be wall-to-wall quality tennis all weekend. Another great thing about this tournament is the schedule which has the championship matches on a Sunday and not a Monday (Men’s AA/National Team Indoors) or Tuesday (NCAA).Women’s Field By The Numbers Schools with...
