ITA Indoors Day 1 Recap: TCU Tops Mississippi State; USC Upsets Florida; Texas Eliminates the Illini, Wake Escapes Columbia

The opening day of the Men’s National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago was a day of upsets and near-upsets as No. 2 Mississippi State and No. 4 Florida went down while No. 3 Wake Forest and No. 5 Texas survived and held on. The top seed Ohio State had no issues, North Carolina blanked a less than 100% Baylor, UCLA overcame the loss of one of its top players to get past Notre Dame, and Virginia surged past Stanford 4-2. The day started off with the biggest upset by seeding as No. 15 TCU defeated No. 2 Mississippi State 4-1. Tuesday was a great day for Ohio State with the Buckeyes taking care of business on the court against USC while also being named as the top seed at this weekend’s Men’s National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago. Ohio State ran its record to 9-0 after posting its sixth shutout of the young season with a 5-0 win over No. 5 USC. It looked like the Buckeyes might start off in a 1-0 hole after going down breaks at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles but they managed to get both back on serve. NTI All-Tournament Team Announced, USC Holds Off Cal Poly 4-3 in Second PlayFair Challenge Dual

The ITA announced the Men’s National Team Indoors All-Tournament team on Thursday with Virginia filling four of the six singles spots and two of three doubles teams. Ohio State junior Mikael Torpegaard was named the tournament MVP after going 4-0 in singles at No. 1 with wins over Oklahoma’s Andrew Harris, Oklahoma State’s Julian Cash, Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos, and Virginia’s Collin Altamirano. The final of the 2017 Men’s ITA National Team Indoor Championships had it all from a controversial ending to the doubles point, to someone getting a game penalty for a racquet smash, to guys coming back from multiple breaks down, and to finally having JC Aragone fight off a match point to clinch the championship in a third set tiebreak.
