Mid-Week Recap: Top-Ranked UNC Tops Duke; Charlotte Clips Penn; UCF Over Tulane; New Rankings Released

Wednesday afternoon brought us a top 3 showdown on the women’s side with North Carolina hosting rival Duke. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 1 by the ITA and No. 2 by the USTA, jumped out to the early 1-0 lead on #3/#4 Duke after rolling to 6-2 win at both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. UNC added four opening sets in singles however the first match to finish came at No. 6 with Duke’s Ellyse Hamlin winning convincingly 6-0, 6-1. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils that’d be the only point they’d muster because UNC’s Sara Daavettila would make it 2-1 with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 and Cameron Morra would up the lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 7-5 win...

A Tennis Channel national audience, along with 1200 fans in the stands at the USTA National Campus, witnessed UCF knocking off ITA No. 48/USTA No. 18 Florida for the first time in school history with a thrilling 4-3 win. The Knights dropped the doubles point and then in singles each team claimed three opening sets. UCF won the first two matches to finish with Natalia Serrano and Rebeka Stolmar winning in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 5 but Florida’s Victor Emma evened it up with a straight set win at No. 4. NCAA Men’s First Round – Favorites Rule The Day Except For Louisville Clipping UCF

The opening day of the NCAA Tournament brought us a few good matches but for the most part it was blowout city as 23 of the 32 matches ended in 4-0 shutouts. All regional hosts won their matches 4-0, which was expected, but I was surprised that only one No. 3 seed was able to get past a No. 2 seed. #42 Louisville was the No. 3 seed that pulled off the upset as the Cards knocked off #28 UCF in the lone 4-3 match of the day. UCF jumped out to the early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point with a 7-5 win at No. 2 and a 7-6(5) win in the decider at No. 3. Louisville came back strong in singles and picked five opening sets and both Parker Wynn and Clement...

Sebastien Jacques Is Doing Some Walking, D2 NCAAs Reach Semifinal Round, D1 Men’s Regional Previews (Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor, Texas, Florida, Virginia)

Former Virginia Tech Hokie Sebastien Jacques is making his way across the country, by foot, after not being able to walk across a room just a few years ago. Jacques played at Virginia Tech from 2007 to 2010 but during his senior year he had to quit playing due to a lack of energy. After graduating with a degree in marketing he returned home to Magog, Canada, and after seeing several doctor he was eventually diagnosed with a pineal cystic tumor in his brain which was the cause of the energy drain. The doctors in Canada determined the procedure was too risky and the health care system wouldn’t cover the cost so Jacques ended up raising $80000 and had the...

Georgia Tech Women Sting #4 North Carolina, Columbia Roars Past Cornell, UCF Upsets USF, Peter Smith Wins #600

After watching a top 10 men’s showdown on Friday night in Winston-Salem, I took in a top 10 women’s showdown on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. Fourth-ranked North Carolina hadn’t dropped a regular season conference match in three years and was riding a 50-match home court winning streak but both of those streaks would come to an end courtesy of tenth-ranked Georgia Tech. North Carolina was playing without Alexa Graham (#4S/#2D) who was out with an illness so they had to change one doubles pairing and move everyone in the lower half of the singles lineup forward one spot. North Carolina’s Hayley Carter and Jessie Aney jumped out...
