The National Indoor Intercollegiate selections were released today and while they were pretty straight forward there were a few last minute changes.

In the men’s singles draw, Florida’s Diego Hidalgo got in as a 7th at-large due to North Carolina’s Ronnie Schneider pulling out. I know Ronnie has had shoulder issues in the past so that could be why he’s out.

Georgia’s Austin Smith (14.41) got the at-large selection that was reserved for the player with the highest UTR.

Duke’s Nicolas Alvarez, who was the Oracle Masters Runner-Up, got the ITA’s wild card and Illinois’s Jared Hiltzik was awarded the USTA’s wild card despite not participating in any collegiate events this fall.

Columbia’s Victor Pham got the host wild card after he finished as the runner-up at the Northeast Regional (correction – Shawn Hadavi has now been put in)

Stanford’s Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski got the USTA’s doubles wild card despite never playing together before.

In the women’s singles draw UCLA’s Catherine Harrison replaced Pepperdine’s Luisa Stefani while there were a few changes in the doubles draw. Cal’s Klara Fabikova and Olivia Hauger replaced Pepperdine’s Stefani and Runglerdkriangkrai while Virginia’s Julia Elbaba and Skylar Morton replaced Alabama’s Andie Daniell and Erin Routliffe.

Florida cleaned up the at-large selections with Brooke Austin, Belinda Woolcock, and Kourtney Keegan each getting one in the singles draw.

A week after Hartford announced it was cutting its tennis programs fellow America East member the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) announced today that it was doing the same. UMBC listed it’s process for eliminating the program with the primary reasons listed being the lack of a conference, lack of success, and freeing up the expense of running the program to stabilize the budget. The only remaining men’s member in the America East is Stony Brook so you’ve got to think the writing may be on the wall for them as well.

Earlier in October Tennis.com released its list of the Top 20 college tennis stadiums and last Friday they release the article to go with the list.  I actually wrote several of the bios for the article and in doing so I learned a good bit about the people that donated money to get these stadiums built. The rankings themselves were done by a collection of coaches, athletes, and others that have been to a number of these facilities. I personally have been to 9 of these 20 but will hopefully see some more in the near future.  As with any list that is subjective, there will be some differing opinions on which is the best but after going to Waco for the NCAAs last May I will say that I didn’t have a problem at all with Baylor being #1.
