Most people’s attention this past weekend, including mine, was focused on the National Indoor Intercollegiates but there were several other fall tournaments that took place as many schools closed out their fall schedules.

Georgia sophomore Emil Reinberg, who is a name to keep an eye on this year, was named the singles champion at the Bulldog Scramble in Athens after going 4-0 with wins over Princeton’s Alex Day, Wake’s Dennis Uspensky, Georgia Tech’s Carlos Benito, and Miami’s Christian Langmo.

Other notable performances
South Carolina freshman Scotty Cameron went 4-0 with wins over Princeton’s Tom Colautti, Miami’s Nile Clark, Miami’s Kevin Bondar, and Georgia Tech’s Phillip Gresk.
Georgia Tech sophomore Andrew Li went 4-0 with wins over Georgia’s Walker Duncan, Georgia’s Robert Loeb, Princeton’s Payton Holden, Miami’s Dane Dunlap.
Georgia sophomore Jan Zielinksi went 4-0 with wins over Wake’s Alan Gadjiev, Georgia Tech’s Carlos Benito, Miami’s Christian Langmo, and Princeton’s Tom Colautti.
Georgia Tech junior Daniel Yun went 4-0 with wins over Georgia’s Alex Phillips, Miami’s Nicoasl Genovese, Georgia’s Andy Martinez, and Princeton’s Payton Holden.

For those that were wondering how they determined the champion with multiple undefeated players they used the average Universal Tennis Rating from all the opponents that were defeated. Reinberg edged out Zielinski with Reinberg’s opponents having an average UTR of 13.35 versus Zielinski’s 13.26. Andrew Li’s opponents UTR was 13.24.

Georgia comments
“It was great to see Robert Loeb show a lot of energy,” said associate head coach Bo Hodge, “and just have a more aggressive attitude, because he is a very good player. Jan and Emil just continued to play great tennis. These last couple of months, we have made a big leap, and I’m excited about it, and I think we are all just looking forward to getting the team started in January.”

Georgia Tech comments
Head coach Kenny Thorne says: “A couple of guys finished the fall season on a good note. Andrew Li went undefeated in singles and doubles for the weekend. He fought well today and executed some patterns he has been working on. Andrew and Cole worked well together all weekend in doubles. They returned well and kept pressure on their opponents every point. Daniel Yun did a better job of staying disciplined in his game style over the weekend. He is a very good athlete and has the potential to play at a high level when locked in. We go into the off season soon and some work needs to get done. The team season will be here soon and we are looking forward to it.”

South Carolina comments
“I’m very happy with the way the guys finished today,” said head coach Josh Goffi. “We’ve been harping on being relentless with their focus and their intention throughout an entire match and they did well with that today. Overall, we’ve had a successful fall and we will ramp up the off court training in the coming weeks as we head into the offseason.”

Princeton comments
“Overall, it was a solid fall break trip for us with some good success against quality competition,” Princeton coach Billy Pate said. “At the Georgia event, Alex (Day) really played at a consistent level all weekend, which is great to see. I also felt we did some good things in doubles with some various combinations. At the Florida event, Davey obviously played very well to go 4-1 and win the back draw. He faced an experienced and strong opponent from USF in the first round. After a close loss there, he grinded through the remaining matches to cap off a good week. We’ll now turn our attention to the non-competitive part of our season for the next two months as we prepare for the spring dual-match season. It’s always a good opportunity to continue working hard in the weight room while getting a chance at more individualized work on-court. We can also use the time to heal some injures and hopefully be at full strength when we open at Michigan Feb. 2.”

Viking Invitational – Cleveland State freshman Nico Mostardi won the main singles draw with a 3-6, 6-3, 12-10 win over Youngstown State sophomore Yossi Dahan while Northern Illinois’s Eric Marbach and Georg Lundvist won the doubles draw with a 6-3 win over Butler’s Gerstein and Ben Shabat.

“Overall I thought this was a great first time event, and there was great sportsmanship between all of the teams this weekend which made the event a real joy to host,” Cleveland State head coach Brian Etzkin said. “The end of the tournament came down to a lot of matches between Cleveland State and Youngstown State and it was great to see the battle back-and-forth between the two cheering sections throughout all of the matches. It’s always great to see a Horizon League opponent during the fall season, and I’m glad that we were able to see some great matches between the two teams.”

“It was awesome that our own guy was able to secure the main singles draw, and Nico certainly took a lot of heat throughout the week about being the top seed, but he lived up to his seeding and pulled out some great wins this weekend. Colton and Jack also had a great final day of the tournament, picking up a handful of wins on Sunday to allow the Vikings to close out the weekend on a definite high note,” Etzkin said.

Larry Easley Memorial – UCLA senior Joseph Di Giulio won the UNLV hosted tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Portland’s Mathieu Garcia in the singles final but Garcia was able to win the doubles title as he and fellow junior Michail Pervolarakis defeated Di Giulio and Austin Rapp 8-7(7).

Di Giulio’s Wins:

F – def. Mathieu Garcia (PORT) 6-1, 6-1
SF – def. Jake Devine (USC) 6-3, 7-6 (4)
QF – def. Ruben Alberts (UNLV) 6-3, 6-3
R16 – def. Mike Pervolarakis (PORT) 6-1, 7-6

“The day started really well with the super close doubles final,” Portland head coach Aaron Gross said. “For the third day in a row Mike and Mathieu were down a match point and ended up winning. They had a great three days of doubles in this tournament. We showed a lot of improvement in that area.”

“The singles final was a little bit rough,” Gross noted. “Mathieu spent a lot of hours on the court over the last couple days. Actually quite a few more hours than his opponent who had a little easier route to the final. Plus, his opponent is just a very good, solid player. Mathieu did everything he could out there, but it just wasn’t enough today.”

“Overall I am super pleased with the tournament and our results,” Gross said. “It’s great to see hard work pay off. Every tournament doesn’t always prove that, but this one did and we are for sure coming home a better team.”

ASU Thunderbird Invitational – Arizona State senior Kassidy Jump, who was the top seed, defeated sophomore teammate Sammi Hampton 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win the singles title and Arizona State won 14 of 15 doubles matches in a weekend of Sun Devil dominance.

Jump’s Path to the Title
F – def. Sammi Hampton (ASU) 1-6, 6-3, 6-2
SF – def. Kelley Anderson (ASU) 6-4, 6-4
QF – def. Gussie O’Sullivan (ASU) 7-6(5), 6-7(6), 6-1
R16 – def. Maria Paula Torres (USD) 6-3, 6-3

“One of our goals for the weekend was to keep the Kachinas at ASU,” said head coach Sheila McInerney. “We did it with both the winner and runner-up. It was great for Kass as a senior in her final year of this tournament, that was certainly her goal for the weekend. It’s not always easy winning it when you’re expected to win it as the top seed. It’s never easy playing your teammate.”

“I’ve always had a hard time playing friends,” said Jump smiling. “Sammi was difficult because I have to be able to pump myself up, but I don’t want to get in their face while doing it. After the first set, I tried to start saying ‘c’mon’ – even if they weren’t very loud – and slap my leg and get into it a little bit more. It helped but it’s not fun playing your teammate at all.”
