Saturday Recap: Texas Tramples TCU 6-1; Stanford Steams Past Washington 4-0; Michigan Mauls Northwestern 6-1; Yale Women Win Wild One Over Columbia

The three top matches on Saturday each finished with lopsided results as the Texas men, Stanford women, and Michigan women rolled to wins over top 25 conference opponents. 

Fourth-ranked Texas improved to 20-2 and snapped a four-match losing streak against No. 10 TCU with a 6-1 win. After TCU finished up its senior day activities, which celebrated the careers of Alex Rybakov and Reese Stalder, the Horned Frogs claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Texas regrouped in singles and took five opening sets with Yuya Ito and Leo Telles winning in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 to give Texas a 2-1 lead. TCU battled back to force several third sets but ultimately the Horns would win them all with Christian Sigsgaard clinching at No. 1 with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Alex Rybakov. 

Texas finishes conference play next weekend with road matches at Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. TCU will have to regroup quickly with No. 8 Texas A&M coming to town on Monday and then the Horned Frogs make the same trip that Texas makes to Stillwater and Norman. 

“It was a great match today and we have so much respect for how good TCU is,” interim head coach Bruce Berque said. “These seniors had never beaten TCU until today and it was important to be able to get a road win at such a difficult place to play. We didn’t start well in doubles, but to then turn around and win all of the singles was really impressive. I really liked the way we competed.”

“I give credit to Texas and their coaches for putting together such a good and deep lineup out there. There aren’t any weak spots in that lineup. They came to our home and took every singles match. Four of them went to three sets and they wouldn’t let us have anything. This will make us better. They totally deserved this win and we need to come back on Monday night against Texas A&M and show our fans and ourselves what we are made off. The level out-there today was very good and just not good enough on our part. The big winner besides Texas was college tennis. What an awesome experience for all fans. Stanford won its 34th consecutive regular season Pac-12 match with a dominating 4-0 win over No. 15 Washington. The Huskies entered unbeaten in Pac-12 play but they were no match for the Cardinal who were celebrating the collegiate careers of Melissa Lord, Caroline Lampl, Kimberly Yee, Elizabeth Yao, and Naomie Rosenberg on senior day. 

The Cardinal cruised to wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles and then added all six opening sets in singles. Melissa Lord, Caroline Lampl, and Emily Arbuthnott won in straight sets at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 while the other matches went unfinished with Stanford leading on each courts.

Stanford will be favored in each of its three remaining regular season conference matches, all on the road, against Utah, Colorado, and Big Slam rival Cal.

Michigan, ranked No. 18, remained undefeated in Big Ten play with a routine 6-1 win on the road over previously unbeaten No. 25 Northwestern. The Wolverines won a close doubles point, which was decided in a tiebreak at No. 2, but there was nothing close about the results in singles. Kate Fahey, Giula Pairone, and Alyvia Jones only dropped a combined 7 games in their matches at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 with Jones getting the match-clincher at No. 6. 

For some reason not mentioned in either recap the match at No. 5 didn’t begin until after a few of the other matches finished. Michigan’s Anca Cracin won that match at No. 5 with two 10-point supertiebreaks played in lieu of regular sets since the team outcome had already been decided. 

Michigan is now 8-0 in Big Ten play with its toughest remaining match coming on Sunday at Illinois.

Yale snapped Columbia’s 12-match winning streak with a come from behind 4-3 win. Columbia jumped out to a 3-0 lead after taking the doubles point and getting singles wins at No. 5 and No. 6 but Yale rallied and swept the top four courts which included going 4 for 4 in tiebreaks.

Raissa Lou put the Bulldogs on the board with a 7-6(4), 6-4 win at No. 3 and after dropping the first set 6-1 Samantha Martinelli took the next two 7-6(4), 7-6(1) to pull the Bulldogs to within 3-2. Jessie Gong tied it up with a 7-6(10), 6-3 win at No. 4 and Caroline Dunleavy won the decider at No. 2 singles 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
