There weren’t any real surprises on Friday on the men’s side though there was an upset on the women’s side with another huge near miss. Sixteenth-ranked Michigan had the biggest scare on the men’s side with Penn State taking them down to the wire on that deciding court. Penn State jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point but Michigan managed to take five opening sets in singles. Penn State’s Marc Collado won in straight sets at No. 5 while Michigan picked up straight set wins from Alex Knight, Runhao Hua, and Carter Lin at 3, 4, and 6. Lin’s match at No. 6 actually finished after Penn...

There have been several dual-matches over the last few days that I wanted to make a mention of before we officially hit the weekend. There haven’t been any big upsets although there was a near upset in Berkeley on Wednesday night when No. 11 Cal hosted No. 48 Yale. Cal took the doubles point but Yale came back and took a 3-2 lead after Tyler Lu upset Florian Lakat 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Cal freshman Connor Heap won just hit second career dual-match by coming back from a break down in the third set to defeat Dennis Wang 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6. Heap trailed 4-3 in the third but broke and held for 5-4 and then a few games later he broke from 30/40...

The latest USTA Top 25 is out with both the Virginia men and Florida women remaining at No. 1. Surprisingly, Florida is no longer a unanimous No. 1 despite having wins over everyone else in the top 10 except for California and Georgia Tech which it hasn’t played. North Carolina is only two votes behind Florida at No. 2 while Ohio State holds firm at No. 3. Georgia moved up two spots to No. 4 after the win at Florida last Friday and Stanford drops one spot to No. 5.The Wake Forest men moved up one spot to No. 2 after a win over Georgia coupled with Ohio State losing twice which dropped the Buckeyes one spot to No. 3. North Carolina remains at No. 4...

Last Friday night Mackenzie McDonald and Danielle Collins were selected by a panel of six as the two inaugural winners of the Oracle US Tennis Awards. Both McDonald and Collins, who were the 2016 NCAA singles champions, won a $100,000 grant to help with their transition from college to professional tennis. Collins, who was actually a two-time NCAA singles champion, currently has a career-high WTA ranking of 237 after having no ranking when she graduated from Virginia last May. McDonald, who left UCLA after his junior year, currently has a career-high ATP ranking of 245 after having a ranking of 427 when he officially turned pro. The full release is available...

Near the end of last week I added a rankings tab in the menu that will have real-time rankings that will be updated from Thursday through Monday. Right now it currently shows a projection for tomorrow’s top 25 for both the men and women and then by April I’ll expand it to the top 45-50. This content will only be available for College Tennis Today subscribers so if you’re not on board yet you are missing out. The just completed tournaments in Indian Wells and San Diego were the last big ones until conference tournaments start in late April so by now most schools should be in conference play. The Big 12 is one of the exceptions because...
