WimbledonThe opening round of singles at Wimbledon went about as good as expected with players with college ties going 4-2. John Isner, Steve Johnson, and Jennifer Brady won in straight sets while Kevin Anderson came back from a set down to knock out the No. 31 seed Fernando Verdasco in four sets. Cameron Norrie made his Grand Slam debut but the No. 12 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga knocked him out in just 1 hour and 23 minutes. Irina Falconi was the only former collegian to come through qualies but she lost in straight sets to the top seed Angelique Kerber though it was a respectable 6-4, 6-4 scoreline.
The doubles draw gets started on Wednesday plus Anderson, Johnson, and Brady will be back in action in the singles draw.

Notes – Daniel Belovs is attending UNC but I don’t think he’s going to be on the tennis team. Gabriel Evans played at Laredo CC during the 15-16 season but I couldn’t find if he played somewhere else last year.
Northern Arizona VP of Intercollegiate Athletics Lisa Campos announced the hiring of
Maciej Bogusz as the program’s new women’s head coach. Bogusz, who played at Lamar from 2006 to 2009, comes to Flagstaff from Wyoming where he served as a volunteer assistant, full-time assistant, and associate head coach over the last five years. Bogusz takes over for Ki Kroll (men’s coach) who served in the interim role last season following Kim Bruno’s departure to Michigan State last summer. Below are some quotes from

“I am honored to have Maciej as our new head coach for women’s tennis,” said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Lisa Campos. “Maciej has experience recruiting and coaching top talent, as his players have ranked amongst some of the best in the mountain region. He understands that it’s important to win in the classroom and on the court and we are happy to have him in Flagstaff.”
“I would like to thank Vice President Dr. Lisa Campos, and the entire search committee for this great opportunity to join the NAU family,” said Bogusz. “NAU has exceptional athletic programs, and together with my wife Ewa I cannot be more excited to be a part of it. I look forward to getting to know my new players and start working with this amazing group of student-athletes. I also want to thank Coach Clower, my former players, and the great tennis community for five wonderful years at University of Wyoming.”
The Richmond Times-Dispatch
reported that Richmond men’s head coach
Ben Johnson has resigned after 7 seasons to pursue other professional opportunities. Johnson, who was the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year last season, went 98-69 (.587) including a stout 25-4 last year although the Spiders missed out on the NCAA Tournament after falling to VCU 4-3 in the final of the A-10 Tournament.
