Mid-Week Recap: Wake Forest Beats UNC; Georgia Gwinnett Win Streak Tops 100; Cal Poly Edges Utah State; New Rankings Released

Wake Forest defeated North Carolina for the second time in the last five weeks with a 5-2 victory at home in Winston-Salem. North Carolina got off to a promising start after taking the doubles point and adding a straight set win from Mac Kiger at No. 6 but Wake tied it up at 2-2 with straight set wins from Petros Chrysochos and Rrezart Cungu at No. 2 and No. 5. The three remaining matches went three sets with Wake taking them all. Stanford Upsets Cal, North Carolina Beats Short-Handed Duke, Mercer Win Streak Hits 12, Cal Poly Clips Utah State

The latest edition of the Big Slam was another classic with #41 Stanford upsetting #6 Cal 4-3 on Tuesday night at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Cal welcomed Filip Bergevi back into its singles and doubles lineup after he missed the last few weeks with an injury and his return paid off in doubles as he and Florian Lakat, who earlier in the day were elevated to the ITA’s No. 1 doubles team, defeated Tom Fawcett and William Genensen at No. 1. Bergevi served for the match up 5-2 but he was broke on the no-ad point after Fawcett hit a second serve return winner. The ITA announced the Men’s National Team Indoors All-Tournament team on Thursday with Virginia filling four of the six singles spots and two of three doubles teams. Ohio State junior Mikael Torpegaard was named the tournament MVP after going 4-0 in singles at No. 1 with wins over Oklahoma’s Andrew Harris, Oklahoma State’s Julian Cash, Wake Forest’s Petros Chrysochos, and Virginia’s Collin Altamirano. UCLA & Cal Poly Win Big, Arizona Rallies Past Grand Canyon, Possible Men’s NTI Pairings

After a busy weekend there were a handful of matches on Monday including one match that started on Sunday but finished on Monday due to rain. Seventh-ranked UCLA played its first indoor match of the year at Tulsa and judging by the final score it looks like they’ll be ready to go when they begin the National Team Indoors on Friday. While many of the singles matches weren’t very close the doubles decider at No. 1 was as close as it gets.
