The featured match of the day took place in Palo Alto with Stanford hosting USC in a non conference matchup. Stanford had dropped the doubles point in three consecutive matches and it didn’t get off to the best start after USC’s Rob Bellamy and Jake DeVine picked up a quick 6-2 win at #3. However a short while later Stanford’s Nolan Paige and David Wilczynski would win 6-3 at #2 and then Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz sealed the doubles point with a 6-4 win at #1.

USC quickly turned things around in singles by taking five opening sets and Nick Crystal needed just over an hour to finish off David Wilczynski 6-3, 6-1 at #2. Stanford would end up being just as dominant in the second set as USC was in the first because the Cardinal took four second sets while USC’s Jack Jaede forced a split at #5.

So it was a 1-1 match with all five matches into a third set but one by one they came off the board in USC’s favor. Logan Smith made it 2-1 with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Nolan Paige at #3 and then just moments minutes later both Jake DeVine and Thibault Forget would win within seconds of each other at #4 and #6. DeVine beat Sameer Kumar 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 at #4 while Forget got past Brandon Sutter 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 at #6.  Below is match point for Smith courtesy of USC:

They played the remaining courts out with Max de Vroome upsetting Tom Fawcett 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 at #1 and then in the final match to conclude it Stanford’s Maciek Romanowicz edging Jack Jaede 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(8) at #5. The below clip from USC shows de Vroome winning it on a nice forehand winner:

The match ended up being a tale of three sets – USC controlled the first, Stanford the second, and in most courts USC dominated in the third.

The story remains the same with Stanford, they put up a good fight every time but they just can’t seem to get over the hump. I also have to take my hat off to USC because they just keep plugging away and they keep finding ways to pull out close matches.

Post-Match Quotes from Texas Tech’s recap
“We sat down with Jolan and Connor and told them to we needed them to work harder in doubles,” Texas Tech head coach Brett Masi said. “They stepped up and played more comfortable in tight situations today. I was proud of their effort. They were able to save deuce points on their serve, and Connor hit a great backhand up the line on match point. When we’re able to win the doubles point, I feel that we’re in a good position to win three singles matches with the depth of our lineup.”

Post-Match Quotes from St. John’s recap

“Today was a total team win. Each guy contributed to the biggest win in program history. To beat Harvard, a perennial top-30 program, on the road is a big step for us. Our guys came out in doubles and really set the tone especially Lucas and Dusan at the three, said Head Coach Eric Rebhuhn. Alan and Vaidik had great poise and came up clutch. Robbie played one of his best matches and kept the momentum. I am really impressed with Andrei and Danny’s ability to come through when we needed them. We have been working hard since January for this opportunity. We were prepared we believed this was our time. I am so proud of our guys and happy for them.

Post Match Quotes from Penn State’s recap
“It is tough to come away with a loss but it was extremely close,” said head coach Jeff Zinn. “We played well at the end, after about an hour and a half. Barry, Constant, Laaribi, Lieb, and Hanzlik all had really close matches.”
“The difference in tonight’s match (compared to the rest of the season) was that we didn’t win the sudden death points,” said Coach Zinn. “That could be because we were on the road or that we were up against one of the best in the country but that is what it came down to. We have to work on handling the pressure of the moment. I think we played very well. If we play them down the road, now we know what to expect.”
“We were playing well in doubles and thought we had opportunity,” said assistant coach Paul Tobin. “We competed well. Ohio State is an incredibly well coached team, who is known to be aggressive at the baseline. Overall, the guys played hard tonight. I think they will learn from this match.”

Post-Match Quotes from TCU’s recap – head coach David Roditi
“Well, we are getting very good at bouncing back after doubles and that is great. We need to commit more time and more mental energy into our doubles play and practice. One set, no add and no warm-up means we must execute. The best way to execute is to practice. Our players came out strong right away and took the crowd out. All our guys played well and we will take a road win against a Big 10 school anyway. Now we get to sleep and drive tomorrow to Champaign, Ill. for another tough match Sunday against Illinois.
Post-Match Quotes from Wisconsin’s recap
“It’s the first time all year we’ve lost, and I think we saw some things that are very obvious that we can work on,” said head coach Danny Westerman. “The other teams we’ve played all year, our best shots were good enough. Against a team like this, you’ve got to hit three or four good shots to win a play and we weren’t quite ready to do that. And that’s why TCU is as good as they are — they’re able to withstand our good shots and play their best tennis.”
“The match started out great, we were playing great doubles and I felt like the home crowd and our energy was able to come through in that fast-paced doubles set,” Westerman said. “In singles, I felt like we tried to do a little too much. I thought we over-respected them a little bit.”

“Everyone needed to take a page out of Chema’s book today,” said Westerman. “He walked onto the court and he played his game. He wasn’t too intimidated out there, he played his tennis, and when he had a chance to come to the net and end a point, he did. So the team can learn from him tonight.”

Post-Match Quotes from LSU’s recap

“It would have been a long couple of days had Andrew (Korinek) not come up big, Head Coach Jeff Brown said. “We certainly made it a little more difficult on ourselves, we didn’t play good in a couple of spots today. It was a strange match with the potential of a lot of pressure falling onto a freshman but fortunately a senior came through.

Ryotaro Matsumura (UK Athletics)

One of the better stories of the year so far continued to get even better as #18 Kentucky knocked off #64 Indiana 6-1. Post-Match Quotes from Kentucky’s recap
“A good team win overall tonight, fifth-year head coach Cedric Kauffmann. “Doubles was pretty good. We didn’t play great, but we competed well and that’s what you want to see as a coach. You want to see how we handle ourselves when we are not playing our best.
“In singles we are playing better as a group. William [Bushamuka] came back that showed a lot of mental toughness. Ryo [Matsumura] is a rock. Nils [Ellefsen] keeps coming up with the goods and he is closing out sets and matches like a great player. Enzo [Wallart] showed a lot of heart and courage at the end of the third set. I was happy for him. Trey [Yates] is catching his stride before sec which is great to see.
“I was really proud of our guys tonight, said assistant coach Matt Emery. “We came out again in doubles with a lot of intensity and really took it to them. We still have a lot to little things to clean up, but we really just took care of business in doubles and we are very difficult to beat when we get the doubles point.
“I thought all the guys did an unbelievable job of carrying that momentum into the singles. Things got a little tight in the second sets, but we handled the adversity really well.  William did a phenomenal job of righting the ship after a tough first set. He is continuing to prove why he is one of the best players in the country.”

“I was really proud of Trey Yates today taking care of business after the match was clinched, Emery added. “It is great to him playing better each match and taking people out. It is awesome to see his hard work paying off. His work ethic and intensity is one of the keys to our team this year, and I love seeing his game start to click right in time for the SEC season.”
